I grew up going to Aldis with my mother. In fact, one of my earliest memories is dropping a jug of milk while in the checkout line. I was holding the jug of milk because Aldis doesn't give you free bags (paper or plastic ). Instead, aldis veterans know to collect boxes as you do your shopping to carry your groceries home in. It's an ingenious way to cut down on waste while simultaneously allowing aldis to cut costs by not having to unbox their goods or provide free nasty landfill filling grocery bags. Aldis uses a similar presentation to Costco and Sam's club (goods in their boxes without unpacking them to shelves like a Kroger or marsh does), but without having to buy a gallon of Greek yogurt at a time...this is not a bulk food store. The prices are insanely low and are below Costco/Sam's, but with comparable quality. Most everything is Aldis house brands. This store was recently refurbished and it is shiny and clean. There is no self check and the lines can get rather long at times. That said, I dont mind too much as I normally come here twice a month to stock up on staples and then use other stores for smaller trips and more specialized items. A few general tips: - You have to have a quarter to get a cart (you get it back when you return it). - No credit cards, but debit cards are offered with the option to get cash back. - Contrary to some other reviewers, the fruits and veggies are normally quite good. Just don't expect it to look like food porn (a la The Fresh Market...which is fun just to visit for the aesthetics alone). I love Aldi. Their products are good quality and even though it can get pretty busy, the staff is always so fast when checking people out. I'm sometimes bummed when they randomly don't have a basic product, but I think that's a fair sacrifice for the cheap but quality groceries. Two thumbs up! read more

ALDI is the real deal!! On a whim, and because I had heard so much about it, I wandered into ALDI just to see what I could see, and left with a gigantic bag of awesome groceries that only set me back $20! Lots of chips, cereal, crackers, frozen meats, frozen breakfasts, and a lot of the kind of stuff that you fill your cart with at normal grocery stores that end up making up the bulk of your grocery bill, but for far less! The things I got the most excited about were the cheap hummus (which is absolutely delicious, by the way... and about half the price of what it would be somewhere else), organic soy milk, lots of different kinds of soups, and what appeared to be some acceptable produce. The cereals all had what looked like some quality ingredients. If you're looking to shop healthy, you'll have to do some hunting and pecking, but boy is it cheap. I could care less about having fancy stuff, wood grain, etc. in the grocery store, ALDI is just a place to go to get groceries without paying for all kinds of extra unnecessary things. Hooray! Like Elizabeth said, it's cash or debit only, so don't go expecting to pay with a credit card! You'll also have to bag your groceries, and pretty quickly too, as everything just kind of gets dumped into a shopping cart at the end of the line. read more

Aldi is a godsend to the working class. We live within walking distance and walk there almost everyday. Take a quarter with you if you need a buggy (shopping cart). This concept is very shopper friendly and ultimately saves you money. Aldi has recently expanded their selection to include many, many extra organic and health items. Still cheaper than all of their competitors. Only draw back so far, one week they will carry specialty items like sweetened aloe drink for 99¢ or kombucha for less than $3. The next week, it's gone. Also, not all stores carry the same selection. This one does not have polenta or organic sugar which I find regularly in other stores. If you are looking for something the store does not carry, you can request that they start carrying it online. Not that it matters. I have been trying to get them to carry cornmeal for years. No luck. Or corn tortillas. They have a great, very affordable selection. They even carry beer and wine. I've tried several, they're not that bad. Bring your own bags, or pay extra for theirs. This place is awesome, you should totally check it out. The lines move very quickly and the cashiers are always friendly. read more

They only accept cash and when you make your way across the street to get some, they take things from your cart. There is no telephone number listed and you can't call them. As the cashier said it is bad for you but good for us. Cheap food should not equal bad customer service. Added, if you went and ran your card and they said it didn't go through. Watch your bank account you may have been charged twice or three times for your groceries. Looks like a good way to boost their sales by stealing your money. read more

I really appreciate that Aldi is in the United States. Having shopped there in Germany every week made it feel like home when I can visit one here too. I do wish they had more than one German week, though. I would love to have some Lebkuchen year round. At any rate, this is a solid store. The cashiers are quick and helpful. The stock is always up and saving money on Bio products is a plus. Adding Aldi to my shopping trips is worth it for the value alone. Add on the specials every week and you'll fall in love with your local Aldi. I've heard whispers of a German competitor coming to town but I don't think they can top Aldi. I would love to see more variety of german products but I understand Import costs. I'm seeing more and more people shopping at Aldi and that makes me happy. This location is near a major grocery store and does well to attract patrons. The store is clean and inviting. If you've never been to Aldi then I suggest giving it a try. It's not set up to impress. I'm an avid shopper at Aldi. A few things about Aldi if you've never been: you'll need a quarter for your cart and your own bags unless you want to buy them. However, if you're lucky, sometimes you can find a few boxes to take your groceries out in. This place offers cheap but fresh produce, organic options and cheap, good wine. The Blind Owl merlot is a favorite in our house and for $3, you can't beat it. The carts are wider now since the remodel, so if you are lugging two little humans with you, you can sit them both in the cart. We do most of our regular grocery shopping here, but if you are in need of something crazy specific or a rotisserie chicken, you may have to try else where. They also have an aisle of home good-esque stuff as well, like pillows, rugs, clothes, outdoor tools, etc. We found a baby pool here for $5 that my toddler adores. However, this location is truly hit or miss. It's either chaotic and packed with only two registers open, or there's no one around. I will also say that sometimes homeless people hang out in the parking lot and I've witnessed some crazy arguments here as well. But I keep coming back if that says anything. read more

Aldi is pretty much my favorite grocery story in Indy. However, I very much dislike this Aldi just due to the ghetto staff they have weeknights. Last week as I asked the cashier how is day was going, he responded LOUDLY "I'm going to have to see your ID sir for this wine." "Um....ok.." Another example a few weeks ago was when their flier showed they were selling Silk Coconut Milk, an unusual item for them. I asked the cashier girl where it was, as it wasn't next to the milks. Well, I should have just asked for the tire department because she gave me the same look. "Coconut milk? What? We don't have any Coconut Milk." Unusually, this past Sunday I didn't feel like going to 96th St. Aldi and the staff and security was very polite. *confused* read more

Below is an excerpt of a more in-depth case study of Aldi perfomed by the 2o5 group, but the tldr is Aldi is great! 1.) Lower prices, especially on staple items. In a game like grocery, price is often the deterring factor, and here is where Aldi comes in the clutch. From eggs and milk that are generally at least 25% cheaper than most large chains, to health foods, dressing, vegetables, almond milk, cheese, meats, nuts, frozen goods, and pretty much anything else you would need that come in minimum 15% cheaper, the price points at Aldi are a no-brainer advantage to shopping. While not every item will be cheaper, and there will be some speciality and specific items they do not carry due to their design, most items are available and significantly cheaper. 2.) Actual really good random weekly deals. and overall selection In addition to very low prices, Aldi has not only a very well rounded selection of the essentials, but also has weekly specials that are legitimately good deals, from electronics to furniture to all the between. They will also occasionally carry name brands at a lower price and items like flowers are consistently half the price of conventional stores. While Aldi does not overwhelm you with numerous choices and brands, for most items you can choose between standard or organic if appropriate. Should I also mention Aldi carries quality beer and whine for reasonable prices. 3.) Employees are well-rounded Hustlers Despite the fact there never seemed to be more than 6-10 people working (probably more), every single person there is always working very efficiently and focused. In fact, on average I would say that Aldi has the fastest cashiers of any grocery store. While I've never timed it, it seems that their rate is no slower than a cart a minute. Even with the occasional long lines, generally I'm in and out of lines very quickly. Even the people stocking and working in the store seem to be far more focused than any other store. Perhaps due to the smaller size and lower product ambiguity of the store, the people generally woking seem much less lackadaisica and wondering you might see at a Walmart or larger chain. 4.) In and Out Fashion of the store. Most grocery stores are designed by sociopathic business people who want to keep you inside the grocery store as long as possible, wondering for items, throwing 1000 bright colored ads and discounts aimed directly at your dopamine receptors to get you feeing like you are in a casino. They put the eggs 400 yards away from the vegetables and you essentially become forced into getting your 2000 steps for the day if you want cheese and apples together. Aldi does not do that shit. For the most part, once you know the layout of the store, everything is always in the same place. In addition, Aldi does not carry 1000 competitor brands and used less products in the store. In about the size of a square basketball court, Aldi ranges 3 rows with about 7 isles of 90% of any food you would ever need, and 100 % if you have a normal diet. Instead of a 60 yard line of peanut butter and popcorn choices, Aldi has about 1-3 choices of their different in-store brands. While there remain choices for things like gluten free, the store is not bloated with unnecessary product lines and gimmicks to keep you wandering. In addition to the fast lines, the actual layout and product placement and arrangement is meant you keep you moving and on your way. 5.) Customer First Design and Experience -minimalism and leanness for the sake of the customer. -At first, things like paying 25 cents to rent a cart, having to pay for bags, and bagging your own groceries can seem a little underwhelming. After some understanding however, it all made cents. - I realized Aldi does not have the problem of stray carts or any sense of confusion or carelessness with how they interact with the store. The quarter rental is such a genius tactic because it organizes and attaches carts to customers in a way that is efficient for customers and store staff. Not only do they not have stray carts in the lot and someone who has the push them in, it keep the inside of the store uncluttered and eliminates any confusion in the cart adoption process and user flow. - In regards to priced and customer bagging, I realized that this allows for not only maximum cost reduction in all their food, but also encourages eco-friendly bag reuse and speeds up the check out process for all parties involved. By saving X dollars on buying bags that are terrible for the environment, they can pass those sayings onto consumers. - overall layout and selection aids to customer easy decision making and logical arrangement. read more

I just moved to Indy last August and I go to this Aldi every week. Where I used to live, there was an Aldi but my mom never took us there so I never went in it. So when I moved here, I thought I would check it out. The prices are HEAVENLY. 2.49 for a gallon of milk! Thats almost a whole dollar cheaper than walmart, their average price is like 3.25 or around there. I buy nearly everything at Aldi now. The only reason I ever go to walmart these days is for my conditioner. If you live a simple life like me and dont need crazy obscure grocery items and you like saving money, this place is for you. read more

I simply love Aldi. I've never been disappointed in their products, & their prices are super low. Almond & soy milk, butter, whole wheat bread & mini bagels, multigrain chips & waffles, trail mix, guacamole, produce, pet food, & paper products are my staples here. Periodically they have vegetarian burgers, chili, & French onion soup (love it!) The two buck Chuck at their sister store Trader Joe's is even cheaper here. Look for interesting cheeses like aged cheddar, Havarti dill, & smoked Gouda. Occasionally they'll have special items like alehouse cheddar or smoked Gruyere, & goat cheeses plain or flavored. The selection varies; but you can count on a lot of it returning as seasons & holidays roll around, or different cuisines are featured - like Italy, Germany, or Asia. The housewares section also carries seasonal needs like gardening, back to school, bath & bed items, fitness & weight loss, & holiday decor. Fresh flowers are by the registers, and in the spring they have plants, bushes, & trees.
