Can anybody tell me when Aldi transformed into a scaled down Trader Joe's? I mean, it makes sense because Aldi and Trader Joe's are owned by the same family. By the way, I am a big fan of Trader Joe's. For a long while now, friends and family have urged me to visit any Aldi location. They said that I was in for a surprise? In my head, Aldi is/was a place people on very tight budgets went to for a squeezing of additional savings from grocery shopping. Did I ever go to an Aldi before? Yes, and to be honest I was not overly impressed. Therefore, I did not return. Was I surprised by my recent visit? Most definitely yes, the produce was very fresh. The meats I purchased and put on the grill were very good. What? Prociutto, charcuteria, fresh seafood for sale? But my biggest surprise was the wine section that did not exist before. One of my first thoughts was, "Are Trader Joe's wine buyers also picking the wine in all Aldi stores?" I glanced over the selection and of course did not see any very large wineries represented in the offerings? So I took a gamble and chose some of the better wine regions around the world and the grapes that most notably put them on every wine connoisseur's list (Argentina-Malbec, New Zealand-Sauvignon Blanc, California-Pinot Noir, Italy-Sangiovese, ...). Did my gamble pay off? Yes, each bottle that I purchased was excellent and probably would have cost me a whole lot more anywhere else for the same quality. As a result, this particular Aldi that I visited, hands down, now has the best wine selection for this particular area. Most grocery and liquor stores in this general area have a horrible wine selection. As a result of my new found revelations, Aldi is now on my short list of grocery stores that I shop at. Just thought I would pass on this nice tip for those still not in the know about the new and vastly improved Aldi! read more
