    Homewood Artisan Market

Found out about this little street fair when an ad for it jumped up on Facebook. Since it was…read moreFriday and we were up for a trip, we took a ride over to Homewood ... and were we pleased. We guess that Homewood - which has a lot of activities and street fairs during the year - hasn't had one in over a year and is just now getting back into the swing. This Homewood Artisan Market seems to be their first post-pandemic event. The Artisan Market is located just a short walk from downtown Homewood and the Illinois Central trains - at Martin Avenue and Hickory Road. There was loads of available street parking and city parking lots. The Market is only on this Friday June 4 (Noon to 6 pm) and Saturday June 5 (10 am to 6 pm). We stopped in right after it opened, and there were between 30 and 50 booths already set up and it looked liked the Market was going to be a big success. The Homewood Artisan Market is free and open to the public, has a nice attention to pandemic safety issues, has good security, and wide open streets to browse the booths. They also had a very big booth with good street food and a broad tented area with picnic tables for sitting down to eat. Since the Artisan Market is set up on a sort of cross-shaped area formed by Martin and Hickory, we include four views of the booths corresponding to the four areas of the cross. Once again, since a picture is worth a thousand words, here are a few thousand words ... . Highly recommended.

TL;DR version. It's gone downhill. Selection not what it used to be. Prices are up, but that's…read moreeverywhere. Customer service doesn't exist. Full story: I went in for 4 items today and they only had 2. No honeydew or sugar snap peas. I took my tomatillos and lettuce to the unorganized checkout area with one line open. I got behind a terribly selfish customer who had over $200 worth of items that were all mixed up and the checkout person had to sort and organize everything, while the customer was still shopping for more items. A lady in a black tracksuit opened the second register. That customer has a wagonful as well. The lady in the red t-shirt at the first register told me to go into that line. When the customer in front of me was done, the tracksuit lady left the area, walked around for a minute, told a couple of people she needed to go to the washroom, and left. I was never acknowledged. She looked right past me. Also, she was preoccupied distributing a tip that a previous cut the line to give. These customers were blocking the entrance to the facility with their carts when I arrived. Meanwhile, the lady in the gold t-shirt who was helping to block the parking lot entrance when I arrived was walking around, not helping anyone. I could see at that point that I was not going to be served, so I left the items on the counter and left.

Top quality and great selection at very reasonable prices for items not found in the chain big box stores. Having worked in a couple of greenhouses in the 1970's as a teenager, I can appreciate the operation of a family run, independent business that has put in many long hours to make Smits Farms Greenhouses a success. It is a very refreshing and welcome change to find a wonderful greenhouse operation that is totally awesome. I loved the many outdoor garden flowers I bought for my home! The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and most accommodating. Great find! Highly recommended!

He enabled thousands, perhaps millions to eat produce otherwise not affordable in small neighborhood stores or the mega chains. Likes countless others, my husband and I traveled from Chicago to purchase gas and visit Mark's. We never knew what we would purchase, because you didn't always know what would be available. We did know that bananas would be 4#s for $1.00, apples would be .69 cents a pound, and green peppers would be 4/1.00 or 10/1.oo. We always knew we would be warmly greeted by Mark, Jessica, Debbie, and other members of his team. It was a common occurrence to hear, "Mark, what is this? How do I cook this? Can I cook this in soup?" He was always so generous in his immense knowledge of produce. He made it a point of bringing in new produce. He always put extras in your order at checkout. He always made deals when he knew how much you loved something. Many times he sent home extras I passed on to family, friends, and neighbors. Don't think people did not tell him on hundreds of occasions how much he was appreciated, but sometimes it seemed he couldn't enjoy the love because he was so immersed in keeping his store stocked and running smoothly. He was such a blessing to me, my husband, aunt, and others. Mark....now you can rest on your laurels and enjoy the love and appreciation we all had for you. Now you can replay the compliments, fleeting conversations, and testimonies shared while you were tending to your customers and staff. Thank you Mark. You are missed and loved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
