Around Halloween, I decided that I wanted to go to a pumpkin patch. I was looking online trying to…read morefind a pumpkin patch in the area and came across Merrillville Farms' facebook page. I called to confirm they were open, typed the address into my phone, and off we went. When we pulled up to the farm we were confused because there were no cars and there were children playing outside of a house. We asked if we had the correct address and one of the owners, Ginger, told us we did and that she would give us a ride on her tractor out to the pumpkin patch. She dropped us in the patch and told us to come back when we had our pumpkins. It was really fun, we had the whole pumpkin patch to ourselves. We came back with one big pumpkin, two medium sized pumpkins, and two small pumpkins. The total was $9. We talked with Ginger for a while and she told us that they have seasonal crops for the picking. They have blueberries, tomatoes and other fruits and vegetables that you can just go and pick during the summer. I definitely will be back to do that. Also, they sell fresh eggs. I can't remember the exact price, but they were super affordable. I am happy that we found this place and am looking forward to picking things in the spring.

Lots of bushes, beautiful farm, cool chickens (a lot of them, off to the side of the field), cute cat, bee hives off to the side, old machinery - honestly just a gorgeous setting. Customers who shop here have no problem throwing out $10, $5 or $3 food items that are rotten…read more They say that you just take a chance! The food is always rotten. Even if it looks okay when you leave, it will have fur on it the next day. Or if you open it, it will be molded or rotten. When you walk in the door, you immediately smell old fermented moldy produce. If you want to take a chance on getting a parasite, or spend money just to throw away- here's your place! Rotten tomatoes for .69 lb or non rotten ones in the back for $2 lb. The cashier seems to always know which are rotten and which ones you got that don't look okay rotten! If there is no price, they will charge you the highest price they can get away with. I always put the item back. Cash only so there's no evidence of you getting sick. If you use credit you have to pay their up charge. I've witnessed an employee being scolded for talking to a customer who should have maintained being tethered to the back. The sign outside may say Large pumpkins $1.99. When you get inside they are tiny and rotten stems. Not fresh cut. Dried out gords are $2.99 ea. I throw out more food than I find the diamond in the ruff. Sometimes you get lucky - carrots! The best time to come here is before a holiday when they order some fresh produce for a holiday.

We guess that Homewood - which has a lot of activities and street fairs during the year - hasn't had one in over a year and is just now getting back into the swing. This Homewood Artisan Market seems to be their first post-pandemic event. The Artisan Market is located just a short walk from downtown Homewood and the Illinois Central trains - at Martin Avenue and Hickory Road. There was loads of available street parking and city parking lots. The Market is only on this Friday June 4 (Noon to 6 pm) and Saturday June 5 (10 am to 6 pm). We stopped in right after it opened, and there were between 30 and 50 booths already set up and it looked liked the Market was going to be a big success. The Homewood Artisan Market is free and open to the public, has a nice attention to pandemic safety issues, has good security, and wide open streets to browse the booths. They also had a very big booth with good street food and a broad tented area with picnic tables for sitting down to eat. Since the Artisan Market is set up on a sort of cross-shaped area formed by Martin and Hickory, we include four views of the booths corresponding to the four areas of the cross. Once again, since a picture is worth a thousand words, here are a few thousand words ... . Highly recommended.

He enabled thousands, perhaps millions to eat produce otherwise not affordable in small neighborhood stores or the mega chains. Likes countless others, my husband and I traveled from Chicago to purchase gas and visit Mark's. We never knew what we would purchase, because you didn't always know what would be available. We did know that bananas would be 4#s for $1.00, apples would be .69 cents a pound, and green peppers would be 4/1.00 or 10/1.oo. We always knew we would be warmly greeted by Mark, Jessica, Debbie, and other members of his team. It was a common occurrence to hear, "Mark, what is this? How do I cook this? Can I cook this in soup?" He was always so generous in his immense knowledge of produce. He made it a point of bringing in new produce. He always put extras in your order at checkout. He always made deals when he knew how much you loved something. Many times he sent home extras I passed on to family, friends, and neighbors. Don't think people did not tell him on hundreds of occasions how much he was appreciated, but sometimes it seemed he couldn't enjoy the love because he was so immersed in keeping his store stocked and running smoothly. He was such a blessing to me, my husband, aunt, and others. Mark....now you can rest on your laurels and enjoy the love and appreciation we all had for you. I went to another place nearby and was resolved to buy plastic plants. I wish I remembered the name of the two people who helped me. In fact, I will go back soon to make a point of getting their names so I can post them. Two people with more patience than I have ever seen in my life. When I walked in the place was jammed so my first thought was come back later. As I turned to leave a guy says hey, what are you looking for. I explained I wanted to do some indoor hot peppers, some tomato plants, etc. and I don't have a back yard just a deck. In five minutes I was set and ready. Second visit last week was to get some potting soil, and to scope out whether I can grow tomatillos and maybe some tomatoes indoor. Again, packed, and again, helped within a minute or two. As I was leaving I saw the produce and it looked really fresh. I took home a half dozen ears of corn, two dozen tomatoes, hot banana peppers, and a couple of jalapenos. As I was picking stuff out there was an employee stocking. She asked what the tomatoes were for. I explained I was making a marinara. She said the tomatoes I had were ok, but then showed me to the plum tomatoes, showed me how to pick the best sauce tomatoes, and then taught me a trick to peel the skin. I thanked her, and as I was checking out she brought up a beautiful sweet onion and a bulb of garlic and asked if I forgot these. I did. The cashier explained a genius way to make the garlic less pungent and then I was on my way. Oh, and the price was surreal low. When I got home I tried the corn. Amazing. If nothing else stock up on corn here. The onion was amazing. Almost better than vidalia grown onions in terms of sweetness and taste. I couldnt believe how little my produce cost so on the way home I stopped at a supermarket. I bought corn, tomatoes, onions, green sweet peppers, hot banana peppers, and garlic, all picked that day, for one third the price at a supermarket. Other businesses could learn from this store. These are good people. People who take the time to teach their customers, help their customers, and make sure their customers come back. all the while selling good produce and plants at low prices.
