When I think of orchards, I tend to reflect fondly back on school field trips and my childhood in…read moregeneral. That feeling was alive and well at Greenfield, Indiana's Tuttle Orchards. This 200-acre establishment offers around 50 acres of apples, 30 acres of vegetables, 20-25 acres of pumpkins, and a greenhouse among other options. There's a small cafe here. There's U-Pick apples, of course, along with U-Pick pumpkins. There's flowers galore, a variety of food items, exhibits classes, tours, and more. They take credit cards (no WIC or SNAP). There's no general admission to get into Tuttle. There's also no parking fee. There are fees for certain activities, and there are obviously fees for items that are sold. There are over 2,000 items in their farm store. I'm a definite fan of the donuts. Yeah, I know. What kind of weirdo goes to an orchard and gets a donut? Me. I'm that weirdo. More than 90% of their plants sold are grown right at the orchard. Tuttle has been around since the early apple trees were planted in 1928. It's now fourth generation Tuttle, though the owners are actually named Roney at this point (but still in the family). Accessibility? Better than expected and obviously intentional. Perfect? Nope. It's an orchard. No orchard will be perfectly accessible, but it's quite good and employees are helpful as much as able. Parking lot offers parking options. They've worked with disabled students, and the hayride is wheelchair accessible. The pumpkin patch is a dirt path, however, for the most part I found it workable. Some may need assistance. The only accessibility issue in most places would be the crowds, as Tuttle can get quite packed - especially on weekends. Tuttles does ask for advance notice for those with disabilities if possible, especially for groups, so guides can adapt material as needed for age/developmental level. Overall, I really enjoyed this visit. It wasn't my first time to Tuttle, though I'd never remembered it well enough to be comfortable reviewing it. After a recent visit, I remembered why I always enjoyed it so much. It was more accessible than expected, everyone was friendly, and a side benefit is really watching all the kids around you have such a good time. There's a reason so many consider an orchard visit a fall tradition. Tuttle Orchard is a great place to start that tradition with your friends and family.

I love these locally owned, family businesses. Troyer's has been operating since 1912! We stopped in for a deli sandwich. A small line was waiting for orders as clerks worked non stop. I ordered a chicken sandwich with cheese and mayo. The portions of meat are generous. The bread is melt-in-your-mouth fresh made. The sandwich was delicious. I also picked up a fresh made blackberry pie. These pies are beautiful and made from all natural ingredients. They have a great assortment of cheese, so I picked up jalapeño cheese. The aisles are filled with basics that you can't find anywhere else. They sell their own bologna! The fry cakes were all gone. I did find canning supplies, locally- grown melons, and bulk candies. I see why the store is packed with shoppers. Worth a visit when in the area.

The strawberries were so fresh that I had to pick up a quart at $8. The clerk was friendly and worked quickly to keep the line moving. He gently bagged my strawberries. The strawberries were delicious - one bite took me back to my childhood of eating fresh picked local berries. The berries were perfect, dark red and super juicy. You have to get there early to get the lettuce - it goes quickly at only $4.

VanAntwerp's is based in Reddington, Indiana about 5 miles North of Seymour and their 50 acres of farmland produces tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, peppers, green beans, winter squash, pumpkins, eggplants, lettuce, berries, cantaloupe and watermelons. They bring practically all of it to Statehouse Market - it's incredibly high value produce at fair prices and with super friendly service week after week. Owned by David and Kim Sturgill, VanAntwerp's is also known to bring plants and other items to the Statehouse Market. I'd say they're one of the most consistent truly "farm" type vendors. The employees are always knowledgeable and can help you select the correct items for your needs. This includes being able to explain different types of tomatoes and other fruits and vegetables. I haven't experienced VanAntwerp's outside of Statehouse Market, but I've never heard a bad thing about them and never bought a bad product from them. So, if you're in the downtown area on Thursdays between 10:30am - 1:30pm, stop by the Statehouse Market and you can pick up remarkably fresh veggies. I highly recommend both the cantaloupe and watermelon, though I've heard raves about it all!
