Now Yelpers, listen up, do you SUFFER from Hayfever like I do??…read moreHere's a secret to save you money and make you less miserable: Buy local honey at this market (a bottle is $10--way cheaper than OTC Zertec or Claritin) and eat a tablespoon a day. Before you know it, your allergies will be gone. Why?! Because the bees roam around the city and pollinate from the same plants that give your that runny nose and those itchy eyes. Think of it as a painless immunization. The beekeeper has her beehives right behind at her Carpenter Street house. If you really get into it, you can work a deal with the caring beekeeper to purchase a huge bucket for several months. And the honey is BEE-LICIOUS! (yes, that was lame). More Good News: Gosh, what a cute cultural market! The salespeople are so sweet and friendly. The love for what they specialize in or do shines through in their smiles. The market is like none of the others in the city due to its Latin American cultural roots and flavors. They have private, original art for sale (meet the artisans themselves), fresh vegetables, breakfast items, coffee/tea/mate, delicious-looking pastries, dog treats, and my favorite...local honey products. They even have a great looking website (listed above). The Bad News: While it is VERY small (10 tents possibly), they have a great variety of local products. Bring cash! :) The VERY Bad News: You'll have to wait until next year ;(. The market only runs (well this past year) on Sundays from July 27th until October 26th 9 am to 2 pm. ---- Featured in the Weekly Yelp-Chicago "Farmers Market Almanac" on June 2, 2009: http://www.yelp.com/weekly?editorial_id=W8Z6vofGex0KswvVq8Uxhw

Today we stopped there after grabbing some coffee on 18th and Carpenter ;-). We picked up some juicy tomatoes, corn, onions, grape tomatoes, potatoes and garlic. I also grabbed some chicken and mole and ground beef and potatoes empanadas on the way out for our lunch. We reheated them on the panini grill at lunch time. I also scored some fun peach jam. Can't wait to go back next week and try the fresh bread, pastries, vegetarian tamales and tarts. I figure we will take our own "carry out" bags to do good for the environment and take a blanket with so we can turn our Farmer's Market walk into a Sunday picnic. Farmer's Market ends Oct. 28 for 2013. I'm sad I didn't start going sooner but I plan on grabbing some treats from now til then.

So be advised that this is a little out of the way, but really just a little or you can take the "L" and get off at Central Park. If you make your way to Riot Fest, you can find this easy peasy. The payoff, you get to support a jobs and teaching program. It's a partnership between Lawndale Christian Health and the Chicago Botanic Garden's Windy City Harvest. What else do you get, a bevy of freshly grown (most there) vegetables, tomatoes, lettuces, kale, radishes, peppers, beets on and on. If it's not grown on site they tell you where it came from. They had some pineapple and grapefruit, we know those weren't grown here. Pricing is very reasonable, better than you find at some of the neighborhood farmers markets. I bought a healthy bag of stuff for 16 bucks, and that includes one of their reusable tote bags for 2 bucks. So glad to see a worthwhile program that brings healthy food and a jobs program to the Lawndale neighborhood. Definitely repeatable.

Luckily, it was open until 6:00 PM the Saturday of my visit or I would have prolonged it until who knows when. Farm on Ogden stopped me while enroute to a restaurant the evening of my visit; offering me a much healthier choice to eat in comparison. I visited with an interest of purchasing a salad similar to one I had purchased days ago at Green Tomato Cafe, a cafe attached to Lawndale Christian Health Center. But more importantly I wanted to see what produce items were available for purchase. My introduction to Farm on Ogden was at the 2018 Lawndale 5k where it was mentioned that the proceeds from the race support the farm, which at the time I had no idea of. In time I learned about it after visits to Lawndale Christian Health Center - Fitness Center & Green Tomato Cafe. This visit felt like an adventure because rarely do I encounter or let alone visit an indoor farm. Highly intrigued by the presence of its greenhouse and aquaponics system which I will have to sign up for a tour in the future to learn about. As much as I wanted to ask questions about it at the time of my visit, the time was limited and I was quite positive that I would learn about it in the future eventually. Anything that contributes to the growth of a community by offering healthier foods, jobs, and education I am all for. And Farm on Ogden does so with its partnership with Lawndale Christian Health Center and Chicago Botanic Garden - Windy City Harvest. There are opportunities for anyone including veterans and adults with criminal backgrounds. If you drive, there are no worries about parking because it has its own private lot with street parking available as well. And if you do not drive, yet familiar with Chicago Transit Authority the farm sits right outside of CTA Central Park - Pink line making it an easy commute to-and-from. I made it no secret to one of the employees that I would be returning in the near future after what I discovered. Even though I live outside of the Lawndale community, it is heartwarming knowing that my contributions to not only Farm on Ogden, but Lawndale Christian Health Center are meaningful. ~Blessings~ Thomas G

Although it was not the most pleasant day weather - wise - - gray and somewhat drizzly at times AND my favorite vendor, Sputnik Coffee is no longer participating, I still enjoyed the market today. I really enjoyed chatting a little with some of the vendors: Pixie Dust Salts - sea salt mixtures like vanilla, lavendar, rosemary ; John Bailey Honey (Keisha is a delightful young lady that introduced me to the products) - not only honey, various fruit jams, applesauce ; two produce vendors : Steve Frank Farms and Cedillo's Fresh Produce. There's Running Mile Hot Sauce and Yvolina's Tamales. There was an info booth about using Link cards at farmers markets and another about the McKinley Park News. There was also a face painter. Not Just Cookies was sold out and gone by the time I got there slightly before 1 pm. According to the newsletter Broken K Ranch, Made a Mano and The Urban Canopy also participate. I noticed that from 10 am to 11 am there is "Yoga at the Farmers Market". Bring your mat, water, towel and optional blocks and strap. This is a rather pretty location for a farmers market. Because it is in the park, it seems more relaxed to me. I really liked it last year when Sputnik Coffee was here. I heard they are trying to find another coffee vendor and I sure hope they are successful! I also would like to see another bakery vendor and hopefully both will be reasonably priced and well stocked also! Farmers Market - Review #1 McKinley Park Neighborhood - Review #1

Take care of your instructor! There was a cool truck with free pizza samples. Cauliflower crust tho. My brother loves that but I'm old fashioned. A bakery had a wide array of cookies. Hot sauce table. Only one produce vendor that I can recall. The organizers need to step up their efforts to get farmers into the farmers market. That's the draw for city people: produce. How about herb vendors? Cheese? This is a great spot and this FarMar needs more attention.

I've stopped by here periodically to buy pop either to keep at home or as a gift for pop-loving family members. You can find Filbert's at Pete's Market and other local grocery stores, but buying right at the factory is an experience. You walk in through large delivery doors onto their warehouse floor which is truly just that. It's an industrial building and there's crates of pop stacked all over the place. The back wall has shelves with a large display of vintage beer and soda bottles. The bottling plant is in a room right next to the warehouse and you can hear it running pretty much at all times. Walk over there and you can see it running too, which is pretty cool. You can buy filled boxes or if you prefer you can grab an empty one and mix and match however you like. Eventually someone will notice you or you can wave to the foreman in the bottling plant and he will give you a price, which is a lot less than the store prices. Basically wholesale. It's cash only just hand over your money and take your crates of pop. I like all their drinks that I've tried but black cherry has always been my favorite of any brand so I tend to get that a lot. Their cola is really good too. The flavor options are almost endless here.

Sometimes when I'm trying to find "international" ingredients at Mariano's or something it's hit or miss. I found what I needed here and it was a fairly quick trip--I don't think I was in store more than 20 minutes. The store is small, and very very crowded. Aisles are about as wide as a single person facing forward. This isn't a place where you're going to get a shopping cart down an aisle. The prices are good. I got a head of Napa cabbage for 99 cents per pound, and when I go to my neighborhood store it's usually closer to $3-4 or more per pound. Since it was such a steal I added hot and sour soup to my menu for the week. There's a parking lot at this store. It's one way, and you must enter from Archer. DO NOT enter the wrong way or you won't be able to park--the spaces are angled and there's not enough space between the building and the fencing to turn yourself around. There are only about ten parking spaces here so I'm sure it gets filled pretty quick, but when I was here I was the only car parked here. There's street parking which can be pretty chancy, but maybe I'm just speaking from the perspective of someone who was here on a busy Sunday in Chinatown.
