This is probably the worst ALDI I've been in. The weird security was following my friend around. I'm assuming he thought my friend was stealing because he had a tote bag and his prescription we had just picked up was sticking out his tote bag. My friend felt super uneasy accompanying me there. I'm sorry, but everyone against this store is crazy. Haha okay maybe not crazy, but it just isn't a good fit for them. I think they just need to understand that for some people this is the best store in Bakersfield. That is how I feel. I absolutely love this market and the employees. I had never heard about this store until a friend of mine posted on Facebook a receipt of her groceries. I couldn't believe everything that she had bought and how little she spend. I was in shock. I asked her if it was a food bank and she stated it was an actual grocery store. I told her I always spend so much on groceries and always end up with no money. She said I would notice a huge difference on my grocery shopping receipt even if I buy what I always buy. Let me tell you that she was right! I went a few days after and the store looks very nice from the outside. There is plenty of parking. What my friend had forgot to mention was that I need to bring a quarter with me. PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO TAKE A QUARTER. You need it to "rent" a cart to place all your items. I think this is a good way to avoid people leaving the carts outside. Also, you get your quarter back when you return it. Another thing people complain about that I honestly don't mind is paying for the bags. $0.15 FOR A PLASTIC BAG AND $0.10 FOR A PAPER BAG. I come from Los Angeles where you have to pay all the time in all the stores. It's something normal to me. I know a lot of people from Bakersfield aren't use to it, but you can always buy a few and save them. Now for the good stuff. The reason I love this store is because of the quality of the products and the savings. Once I walked into the store I noticed it was very organized and it reminded me of a Trader Joe's. I expected it to be about the same price range. To my surprise, the first product I saw was really inexpensive. I kept walking and noticed a lot of products that I would usually buy for half the price. I was shocked and didn't believe the prices. I was so excited I seemed like a little girl at a amusement park. My husband even told me to breath and calm down. I did after awhile, but now this is like my favorite store. They aren't as big as other grocery stores, but I buy as much as I can from here. If I don't find a product, I just move along and buy it somewhere else. They don't have everything you need, but it's worth the savings. If anything, I just go next door to Wal-Mart and buy what I am missing. I usually find what I need and I don't complain if I don't. My grocery bill is now cut in half and this is why I grew to love this store. Customer service is excellent and they will not hesitate to open another lane if they see a line getting long. read more

Once upon a time, I'd have given Aldi a higher rating. Sadly, this store has demonstrated contempt for the money of people with mobility problems. My husband and I both have issues with arthritis in our knees and hips. We also have bad backs that flare up now and again. A drivable grocery cart is important to us accordingly. This Aldi had one when it opened. A single cart was a bit cheap of them to my mind, but at least it was there. Switching between driving the cart and pushing a conventional one would get us both through the store without major pain or other hassle. I went back last week after a break in visiting caused by various issues unrelated to the store. I found out on arrival that they got rid of their drivable cart. I can't think of a good reason to reduce their accessibility in that fashion. If Aldi is so careful with the pennies they risk raising prices by having those carts, they might want to think of the dollars they're losing when someone like me has to go to a different store because of their stingy disregard for reality. I'd also note that elder citizens often need that cart as well. Aldi may not say they would rather only get younger and physically fit people as shoppers, but they're doing a bang-up job of acting like it. read more

After my * not so great lunch * at Panda Express , I ventured to Aldi next door to grab a few snack items and continue my road trip to So Cal. Aldi is new to California and I was curious to check them out. Since I was on a time schedule I had to *grab & go * Aldi promotes their own brands of products so, there's a limited selection of national name brands. All their brand items have very low prices. The one item which caught my attention was 25 cents for a pack of Hot Dog Buns. Yes, 25 cents ! I have never seen this type of insane pricing. I like the concept and format of the store. I finally went to ALDI for the first time the other week. This review is really late and the only reason I remembered to do this right now is because I drove past ALDI earlier. ;) First thing is first, yes, you DO have to deposit a quarter to use their shopping carts. I understand the concept, no more nightmare in the parking lot. It's actually kinda nice. You definitely get your quarter back after you return your cart at the end of your shopping trip. Next, onto the actual trip itself. Product selection is good but not Walmart status by any means. You will find a lot of your normal pantry items (pasta, boxed dinners, etc.). I bought a case of water (the nice "sport style" bottles with the pop up suckable lid thingy -- don't look at me like that, you know exactly what I mean) for under $5. I prefer these water bottles compared to the standard store brand that I would get for the same price. Prices of all the items that I've seen were much lower than your normal grocery store of choice. Checkout line was a little lengthy when we were there, but it did move along quicker than other grocery stores I've been to *cough, cough* FOODMAXX! *cough*. Overall, 4/5 only because of the product selection. Other than that, the prices and what they DO have is worth your next shopping trip. read more

Have been to both Aldi and I can say their customer service is consistent at both locations Panamanian Stockdale hwy, no greeting no thank you just barks orders put your card in the slot. If you don't they order you again and then again. I wait until the end to figure out which card I use. I've given this store a few tries and I don't think it's really the store for me. It's a small grocery store and it has always been pretty clean when I came to shop. The items they have are priced low, but they don't carry everything I'm usually looking for. They are very limited on items. I had hoped that this could be one of the stores I frequented because I live pretty close but, no... Try to remember to have some loose change because you will need a quarter to get a shopping cart, but you get your quarter back afterwards. I feel like their fruit bundles are a hit or miss in quality and they they don't have a lot of variety or options for different kinds of foods, which can be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it. I was fairly optimistic going to check out Aldi for groceries. Sad to say that I was not impressed. The new building is nice with plenty of parking near Lowes. First thing that popped into my head when checking out Aldi is that it reminded me of Fresh and Easy. I dig the method of getting a shopping cart as it takes a quarter to release the cart and once it's returned you get your quarter back. Good way of not having shopping carts stolen and ending up in random locations. The prices are fairly low, but the fresh meat selection was very minimal. I needed some ground turkey and ended up finding it frozen in one of the lockers. Went ahead and cooked it up that night for my meal prepping and was very disappointed in the quality. Not much of a selection of your going grocery shopping for some fresh meat. Decent produce selection also. Don't forget to take your own bags! 10cents for paper, 15cents for plastic if you don't. Cool idea, very similar to what San Luis Obispo county implemented a while back. My overall take on this place is a hybrid of Food Maxx and Fresh and Easy. I am shocked to hear from (close?) friends that they have not tried an ALDI, yet. It originated in Europe and found its' way to countless stores in America; yay - Like a Trader Joe's 2.0, w/ wider aisles, and (oftentimes) cheaper prices - you're sure to find similarly unique food, fun "new" products to try, some mouth-watering produce (cotton candy organic grapes) and delicious snack foods. They have a ton of handy household items as well, so 1-stop shopping is possible. I lOVE the money I save by shopping here & buying knock off crackers - not generic. THIN WHEATS. I LOVE their plant-based inventory. Bring a quarter for your cart, or swap it with an outgoing consumer. There is a large bagging area, too. Throw on your "Gotta Try It" T-Shirt & stroll through their spacious & clean marketplace. I like to make a few rounds before checking out... YOLO... while other supermarkets have step ladders there is no chance they'll move up on ALDI. As much of our misinformed population continues to fork over hard earned dough to butter up their support for Ralph's and the like; whatever u need, ALDI has it, better. Why not try it? I've been looking forward to ALDI's grand opening for awhile... I must be getting old. ALDI's concept is like their sister store Trader Joe's, but they're a step below. Most of their products are from their company brand, which is similar to national brands, but at much lower prices. In addition to the usual grocery staples and produce, they also offer specialty chocolates and protein bars. I'm impartial to the toffee chocolate bar and protein bar with almonds. As for the prices, they're definitely lower than other grocery in town. A box of my usual salad mix sells for $5 at WinCo; it was $3 here. Red and yellow bell peppers were $0.75 each while they're usually $1+ at other stores. Green onions were $0.50 a pack and I paid $1 for the same pack at Wal-Mart last week. Eggs were $1 per dozen. Their meats are OK, but I think buying in bulk at the warehouse stores is a better deal. My first trip only cost me $35. It could've easily been a $60 trip at my usual grocery store. A generic brand may be off putting to some, but the ALDI brand offerings are very similar to national brands. Many factories process the same food products for multiple brands, but put them in different packages. I have a feeling that ALDI may be taking advantage of these private label deals, as Trader Joe's does. So far, I've tried tortilla chips, ice cream cones, cheese wedges, and salami - they're not spot on to the national brand, but they're pretty darn close. Tip: Bring your own bags, otherwise you'll be paying $0.10-0.15 per plastic bag. Bring a quarter to unchain your grocery cart and be sure to return the cart to retrieve your quarter. read more

I visited aldi's today for the first time and i will definitely be returning. I live on the east side and typically shop at foodmax or vallarta (i despise walmart) but the low prices are definitely worth the trip. I was surprised when I arrived at how empty it was compared to my usual friday night grocery shopping; i hate feeling overwhelmed by people when i shop so this was definitely a plus. Their produce is mostly organic and locally grown and all super cheap. I didn't buy too many boxed goods but I actually prefer their smaller selection. I had an extensive list of fruits and vegetables and i found everything on my list. I probably saved around $20 if i were to have bought everything at foodmax. I definitely recommend this store if you're looking for low price, fresh groceries. If youre dedicated to brand loyalty and like thousands of options then this is not the store for you. read more

I am still laughing at some of the reviews here, I guess, if you are German (like me: I grew up with Aldi, it was and is everywhere in Germany) nothing comes as a surprise when it comes to this grocery store chain. The quarter for the shopping cart: of course you get it back! All you have to do is look for example at almost any Walmart parking lot throughout the country. Carts EVERYWHERE! If you are lucky, none of these 'wildly parked' carts will leave a scratch on your car on a stormy day. Aldi (and almost every other grocery store in Germany) has that covered. Most likely you will bring your cart back to get that quarter back! Aldi's 'secret' ist NOT to have it all perfectly displayed, saves money and these savings are being transferred to the customer. Also they always were known for high quality (did you know that some of their brands are actually high -end brands being sold under Aldi's brand names?) The 'bring your own bag' caused some chuckles when I moved to the US and did what I was used to do: bring my own bags. Not so many chuckles anymore, since more and more stores will either require you to bring your own or even give you a few cents of credit if you bring your own. Environmentally: a pretty good idea in my opinion. If you don't like Aldi, don't go! But if you do (and I am jealous because there is NO Aldi where I live!!!) enjoy and get your hands on the German import chocolate and other sweets, specially around Christmas time, Easter etc. and all the other goodies. Carts are $0.25 to rent, you get it back upon return. Re-usable shopping bag $1.99, insulated bag $0.79, regular plastic bag $0.15, papaer bag $0.10. Come prepared with your own bag or pay. Selection was no more extensive than your typical grocery store. Most of it was their generic brand so very little brand stuff. Having said that, some prices were cheaper, but the tradeoff is that there are less selection. Aisles are nice and neat though. read more

My wife had talked this brand up to me for a while. And she prompted me to go a couple of times. It is not on the way to anywhere we go except the auto mall area. So we have been here a couple of times when getting cars serviced. What an odd store. We pull into the parking lot after 10 am and there is maybe four cars outside. I thought hummm... Anyhow we sacrifice a quarter to the shopping cart gods, found out later you get it back, and went into an almost empty store. So empty I figured what the hell, I will take a census on the spot. There were ten souls in there a few people were with others, only one dollar and fifty cents worth of shopping carts inside shopping. If you are not used to paying a quarter for the cart, there were only six parties shopping. One other time was about the same. Everything was very limited in selection. I do believe some of the prices are decent but such a weird store. I do not see this store catching on. And what were they thinking setting up in walmarts parking lot? What marketing dilbert figured that as a business plan? Like setting up a third rate burger joint next door to in and out. Anyhow I needed to use the restroom and it is very difficult to get to. Squeezing by the shopping cart barricade, I had my quarter ready to get the door open. No- you don't have to pay to pee. All the checkstands had carts in multiples blocking the shopping side from the restroom. Not a welcoming place at all. Go to the checkout stand only one open and I see why. The young lady barks some order at us having to do with the cart, asked her "what", she grabs the cart and then I realize what she was saying. Something about this won't be you cart any more. Just let us out of here. Anyhow we made it out of there without making people angry, retrieved the sacrificial quarter from the GOC (god of carts). And if my wife wants to return she now know where it is. I am ornery enough to figure this place too bizarre. I do not welcome the oddball business plan nor set-up. read more

I've been wanting to check this place out for a while now and finally did so today. Overall I wasn't too impressed because of the big talk of how cheap they are, which they are, but they also have same prices as other stores. They are cheap when it comes to organic produce, regular bananas were 0.39 and organic bananas at 0.49/lb, just a 0.10 cent difference. What I really liked was that they sell spices (such as paprika, garlic powder and minced onion) for only a dollar, and in bigger than the average size container for spices. The milk and eggs are the cheapest I've ever seen, I'm definitely going to shop here for now on when it comes to that. I do love the fact that they encourage the use of reusable bags, environmentally friendly stores are awesome. read more

I shopped in Europe at Aldi's for ten years and was impressed with the prices and choices. I went to the opening of Aldi in Bkfd and am so disappointed. You must know your prices to know if you are getting less expensive foods. Some are cheaper, some are the same and a bit are higher. I saved no money from shopping at Valarta and Food Co, which have great prices. The staff iis wonderful. I needed an electric cart and they have ONE. You can sit and wait for it, or go without. I've stopped by to check out their prices a couple of times since they opened. Yeah they charge a quarter to use their carts but if you return it you get your quarter back. Good idea if you ask me. I already have plenty of reusable bangs and I keep them in my car trunk so it is no big deal to pull a couple out. Not everything they have is cheaper so I tend to just get the items I think are the better deal. For example today they had bananas for fifteen cents a pound. I got sweet corn on the cob for four for a dollar but later found them for nineteen cents each elsewhere. I got red grapefruit for fifty five cents each, and avocados for forty five cents. Milk and eggs are always cheaper. Also they are small so they won't have everything you want. Still it is good to have another grocery store near home. The way I see it there can't be too many places to shop. read more

Very nice, large Aldi with a great produce department. The employees are very friendly and helpful. The store is clean and very well organized. The Aldi concept means that they mainly carry their own brands. The prices are usually 15 - 30% below stores such as Lucky's, Safeway. They have everything but not in very many varieties, which translates into savings for customers. Plus: they have German beer, great chocolates, and cookies. Yes, you have to unlock the shopping cart using a Quarter, but when you return the cart, you get it back! And, the parking lot is free of vacated shopping carts! read more

This is an awesome store! Their meats are wonderful, as good as the high end markets and so much better cost!!! The cost of their bagged salads is reason alone to go to this store. It is the good stuff, with distant expiration dates and half the cost. The rest of their produce is comparable cost. What an awesome store! It's amazing at how much lower their prices are when compared to other major chains. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of fresh produce and organic products it carries (at what seemed to me half the price of a Whole Foods!) and they sell a variety of super healthy pressed juices.
