Beautiful, picturesque gardens. Nice architecture. Very crowded though even at 1630. Definitely worth the visit.

On our trip to Seville we saw this place and out of curiosity wandered in. What a great find. 2…read moreyoung ladies from the US wanted to bring the food and coffee that you only find today in elite farm to table American coffee houses to Seville. The coffee is great - organic, sourced from either single sources or a co-op. The owners were captured by Spain's use of fresh ingredients, but disappointed that they couldn't find the same coffee that they had experienced growing up. In a city full of amazing food, Torch made me break one of my standard traveling rules, never go to a place twice. And to be clear, it wasn't just the coffee. The breakfast gourmet toast was so good, we came back to grab a sandwich for lunch. If you care, they speak English and have an English menu. Don't miss this gem!!!

That exact situation occurred when I visited Torch Coffee Roasters. When the barista saw I was about to snap a picture, he asked me if he could redo it. I compromised. I did not get another drink because I did not want to waste the one I got. However, I agreed to take a picture of his next latte for another customer so I had a more representative example of his skills. In terms of my latte, the presentation was subpar but the substance was very good. The texture was smooth and the taste had no hint of bitterness. Torch Coffee Roasters also had the most space of the coffee shops I tried in Seville. Accordingly, definitely get the latte to stay if you are not in a rush. The latte art is excellent if you do. Service was kind and delightful and the shop is such a delightful little escape right around the corner from tourist heavy spots.

Though it's been a couple of years now, I remember Moderniste in exquisite detail because when you travel alone that is often the case. There is no conversation (not any conversation of yours, anyway) to distract you from the surroundings. As I was nearly always dining solo through Spain (not always--clinks glass in the general direction of Antonio, the unsubtle Italian from the painted hill town...oh, never mind), my tendency was to fixate on what was served to me, and to draw it in detail. My "orange mojito" composition can be found in the photos. The thing was delicious, with celestial orange juice and a bit of pulp, generous shoots and muddles of mint, and the perfect icy boozy buzz to quench the swelter. Spain, my friends, can get some hot going. I think it was nearly 105 the day I was in there. The place had little indoor lighting; they just let the light filter where it could into the long narrow space, cooled with dark wood and Amon Tobin. I'd gotten in there in the blaring heat of 3:00 or so, and when I arrived it was very quiet and felt like a coffeeshop. About an hour afterward it began really picking up (again, all locals) with the post-work crowd and it most assuredly transformed into a bar. I can't be there right now, but go. One of us deserves to.
