I just canceled my next appointment at Alchemy. After 4 tries I've decided to move on.
Initially I was very excited to discover that Alchemy is very close to my house. I had been schlepping into Rockville for a decent, but not great haircut and it just wasn't worth it. I have very short hair and have lots of cowlicks. When I went in to make an appointment I was told that Gwen would best meet my needs. When I had my appointment, I was encouraged that Gwen understood the need to work with the direction of the hair instead of insisting that it could be molded into going in a different direction. You'd be surprised at the number of hairstylists who try to change the map of one's head.
I brought in a few pictures from a magazine to give her an idea of what i wanted, identified my cowlicks, and explained some things about the oddities of how my haiir grows out. As I've lived with for 50 years I know how it's going to grow out when a it's cut bluntly, with a razor, etc. Gwen listened attentively and got to work. Unfortunately, I wear glasses and can't see without them, so I have to hope for the best when I'm in the chair.
The cut took a very, very long time, and, in the end, it looked decent I left thinking that for a first appointment it wasn't too bad - next time she would be more familiar with my hair. When I got home and really looked at my hair closeup I wasn't as hopeful . I was cut unevenly, the layers were shorter on the bottom than top, pieces over my ears were askew, and the back of my head was sticking out at odd angles. I paid $80 and tip for that? I immediately called to get an appointment to get it fixed. They had nothing for a week. When I did go in Gwen was very aplogetic and fixed it for me.
Before my next appointment I located some pictures I had taken immediately after the last haircut i got in NYC (just before I moved here). Not a picture of someone else's head and hair. MINE. They showed my hair at every angle, closeups, etc. We looked at them together and seemed to be on the same page. Well, we weren't. It didn't work out at all. No more $80 haircuts for me.
Next I tried Nate. Again, like all of the staff, he was very nice. I had my pictures with me, discussed the "state of my head", and told him the areas of my hair that grow out fast and strangely. I emphasized that I needed texture, texture, texture. I also told him to cut my hair on the short side as it grows very fast. He acknowledged me with "cool" and. I left the pictures on the counter so he could refer to them. I don't think he did (can't be sure because I didn't have my glasses on). At the end of the haircut, I looked and decided that he hadn't heard what I said. Texture? Short? Nope. I didn't feel like dealing with it so I paid ($51 this time), and went home I looked in my mirror , got out the scissors and started cutting!
Still hopeful, and a bit lazy, I decided to try Alchemy one more time. Brought the pictures, went through the whole speech, slowly and clearly, and was again told "cool". I told Nate that I had cut the hair at the back of my neck myself and he got a bit testy and told me that I should come in between cuts and have him fix it. I asked Nate if he wanted me to leave the pictures out. He very clearly said no. Sigh. He ended up cutting off less than an inch. I knew the cut was going to last me about 6 days.
When I got home I saw that the hair along my neckline was cut just as I wanted! There would be no need for scissors! Wow. Then I looked at the rest, the majority of which was another story. I willed myself to leave it alone, but within a week it was long and driving me crazy. Out came the scissors.
As I was beginning to think that the fault for the bad cuts was somehow mine, a friend who I see on a weekly basis came in with a new haircut. The idea of the cut was a good one, but the execution was awful. It made me feel better about my haircut. When I asked her where she got it cut - ALCHEMY! It was her second cut with Tanya(???). She said that she was very happy with the first one, and couldn't figure out how this one went so badly. She too had spoken with the stylist about what she wanted, thought everything was understood, but with one snip of the scissors too much hair was cut off and there was no turning back.
It seems that the stylists at Alchemy need to have a few seminars in listening to their customers. Some clients come in looking for someone to create a new cut and/or style for them. Others, like me, know exactly what they want, and how their hair will support a particular cut or style. I mean, for God's sake, I brought in a picture of myself, not some model or actress who has hair completely different from mine! Maybe they didn't like the cut on me?? (I used to get stopped on the street in NYC and told that I had a great cut, who cut it etc.) Even if they didn't like the cut - it's my hair. read more
