While the dining experience itself is novel and fun, several things were mismanaged. For example, the location is supposed to be completely in the dark, but when guests came or left, a large strip of light was visible, changing the experience of dining in the dark into dining in the dusk. Next, there was a table of extremely loud guests right next to where I was seated. They were shouting out guesses about what the dishes were, and leveling criticisms about the food. Staff should have asked them to manage their behavior for the benefit of other guests who were speaking quietly and keeping their guesses to themselves. But nobody did.
Also, and more importantly, I am lactose-intolerant, which means I cannot digest milk, butter, cheese, yogurt, et cetera. Of course I understand that at a French restaurant, the menu would include many of these ingredients. But when I called to make my reservation, I was assured that I could be accommodated and thanked for letting them know in advance of my dietary restrictions. However, after the meal, I felt that particular feeling of being too full which signals having consumed a lactose products. This is extremely disappointing.
Additionally, one of the joys of dining at this establishment is to try and guess what it is that you are eating because you cannot see it. It is a fun sensory play with touch and taste being heightened due to the impairment of vision. However, though the menu was prepared to show my dining companion what he ate after the meal, they did not have an updated menu prepared for me, to show me what I ate as the dishes had been modified to accommodate my lactose intolerance. In fact, when I asked questions about the dishes and the modifications, the manager of the restaurant and one of the wait staff actually disagreed about what I had consumed. This was extremely dissatisfying. I had looked forward to verifying whether my guesses had been accurate or not.
The quality of the meal itself was good, but not great. I suppose the novelty of the concept is intended to make up for that. All in all, not worth it. I have heard locations with similar concepts in other countries are better. read more
