    Summer Slush
    Angela R.

It's the hidden gems in the 805, such as Alcazar Tapas Bar that provide a dark, yet intimate and cozy atmosphere. Outdoor seating is available in a parklet with limited seating. They also have a few tables with fireplaces in the middle to set the mood. On my visit I decided to park myself at the bar, because I was a party of one and didn't want to take up a table. I prefer sitting at the bar anyways, so I can ask the bartender for recommendations on cocktails and make good conversation in between. I decided to order the classic margarita since it was still happy hour; which is daily from 4 - 5:30pm. Hannah hooked me up with a nice tall marg and I also decided to try the summer slush. It's made with blanco tequila, chareau aloe liqueur, blood orange, pomegranate, and passionfruit. This mix was created by Hannah and I loved it! I could tell it had a hint of mint, and asked if that was one of the ingredients. She introduced me to a new plant based spirit crafted locally (chareau), which was included in the summer slush. This is why I love sitting at the bar and chatting with the bartender! There's always a new discovery in the mixologist world. For food, I had a date with a pig and pollo con crema tacos. Both on the HH menu for $10 each. Not a bad deal for the amount of food you get! I really enjoyed the dates wrapped in bacon and drizzled with wildflower honey. They melt in your mouth, but you still get that crunch from the bacon. If you love salty, sweet then try these out! The pollo con crema tacos were just as good! I was actually surprised how flavorful the chicken was. Sometimes chicken tacos can lack flavor, but not these ones. The chicken is oven roasted and stewed in a white truffle and habanero cream sauce. The truffle was very light in taste, but definitely elevated this taco. Overall, if you're looking for a nice intimate dining place away from the main touristy areas, then come here. Parking is easy as they have curb street parking in front, or you can drive around to the back parking lot.

I'm obsessed with the mezcal margarita! It has a Tajin rim. The truffle ahi is amazing. I absolutely LOVE the presentation! Marisol and the hostess working Friday were so sweet! My BF and I were really taken by there amazing service. Curious to see if they're menu changes for the winter. Make sure to ask for Marisol if you dine here. :)

Came in for dinner and had the best time. Ray was amazing, so nice, so knowledgeable of the menu. Was the best help in making our experience as perfect as possible. If you come ask for Ray he will get you right. Food was great, drinks superb definitely coming back again!

    Basque cheesecake. Obsessed.

On a stormy night, what a pleasure it was to spend our anniversary in Alcazar's warmth. Food and hospitality were off the charts. Lamb sliders hit every time. What a gem.

Feels like Spain. Smaller, intimate, and friendly service. Tapas was exceptionally tasty (see photos) my favorite being the garlic butter prawns served over saffron and chorizo flavored rice. Three of us. Amazing cocktails (clever names). Douro Valley Port (don't mock me, Portugal is just next door). Our waitress was knowledgeable about the entire menu. Never felt rushed. Great experience.

Stopped in on a Friday evening and this place was packed. Easy parking is available in the back lot of you can't find it in front. We were able to sit inside and there is a little bar and outside area with heaters. All of our tapas were fantastic. My favorite was the papas bravas and the date with a pig (bacon wrapped dates). Yet, I will be coming back for the passion mango cheesecake with a scoop of ice-cream! The service was great, full of smiles and quick to refill drinks and take orders. Plus, their tech made it easy to split bills and quickly pay!

Phenomenal in every way! We tried a pretty decent portion of the menu over a couple hours at the bar, enjoying amazing drinks and fun conversation with Tori the bartender, who was down to earth, chill, and knew her stuff. My favorite remains the pollo con crema tacos, all the ingredients work together perfectly, but, really, it was all amazing. The lighting and decor add a ton to the ambiance, it's an ideal spot for a date or just drinks and tapas with friends. Highly recommend, a rare gem in Santa Barbara.

Alcazar is the most intimately unique date spot on the Mesa in Santa Barbara. Alcazar is under the same ownership as the iconic Milk and Honey tapas bar on Anapamu in downtown Santa Barbara. Alcazar brings the same cocktail list, a few of the same tapas and similar sultry sensual Spanish vibes. Alcazar features very tasty cocktails, sangria and beers with small bites done tapas style and a cozy dimly lit atmosphere perfect for a first date. This place IS expensive- but don't let that deter you from enjoying the ambiance and supporting a small local business that really does add culture and value to the mainly homogeneous, boring upper Mesa neighborhood. Plus-+ they are open late! They have a reverse happy hour from 5-8pm and plenty of entertainment with live music on the weekends and a running projector featuring old cartoons like Betty boop and Popeye rolling. I definitely recommend.

A Mesa gem Always with a smile, Vedta greets us at the door and Johanna welcomes us to the bar. We're regulars with our usual spots, food and drinks. There's good reason for that. The smaller, neighborhood sister of Milk and Honey, Alcazar has a great location with easy parking, although usually not out front, and offers a fun and delicious dining experience when you don't want to leave the safe bubble of the Mesa. The tapas portions are what you would expect and even the larger dishes, like Paella $19, could be devoured by one hungry human. Don't let that stop you from ordering. But let's start with drinks. Sangria! I've been drinking the ever evolving wine and fruit concoction here for over a decade. It's still my go to but I don't stop there. Joanna will whip up a fancy cocktail and you'll be hypnotized by her rhythmic martini shaking. Bubbles and fun wine list is m also available and I recommend the Gerard Bertrand Corbieres (French GSM) to open up the flavor of the Cassoulet $11. You'll never be single here with an order of Date with a Pig $9. A well enjoyed classic and fun plate to share. These come out hot so give a sec before diving in. Add the Brussels Sprouts with bacon $10 (and why not), Pulled Pork Tacos $8, and Shrimp & Grits $16 and you're in your way. Recently enjoyed the Enchuladas $12 for the first time and will certainly return to this deceptively filling and creamy dish. Many of the menu items are Gluten Free and the kitchen is well versed in Dairy Free options too. Good times had by all! Alcazar will get packed and loud at the dinner rush but is relatively quiet, or even almost empty of you get there early or come late. That's when you'll usually find me at the bar, visiting with the team and glancing up at the projected movie on the wall to see if it's some Japanese anime, classic French film, a childhood cartoon,or something with animals. If it's too much to take inside, enjoy dining al fresco at one of two tables on the sidewalk. Tip: these are dog friendly. Come and enjoy sharing a night at Alcazar. It's worth crossing town for. And if you make on a Monday, Happy Hour all night long. Cheers

The food is wonderful here. The same chef has been here forever. I like their updated look with the pig in the middle of the seating area. This place is usually packed so it would be good to get a reservation but they will seat you without one.

The service and drinks are great here! Our server was super friendly, especially for a busy Saturday eve. The tapas choices are really diverse so there were a lot of great options if you go in a big group. Also, a very good place to go if you have any allergies as the server was transparent about any items that can be dangerous. The drinks were good and strong! The bartender really puts their craft into the drinks! Everything we ordered was very unique and tasty! Definitely give them a try if you are in the area.

He gave us some great advice on what to order and we enjoyed every bit of it! There was also another gentleman that brought out the umbrella for us since it was getting sunny. We had a couple workers walk by without asking, but he was so kind enough to make us comfortable. The drinks we ordered were so refreshing. We ordered the Costa Blanca, De Aqui, and the Bengala de Granada. The drinks were so crisp that it almost felt like a palette cleanser. The yellowtail crudo was perfectly balanced between sweet and citrusy. The oysters looked spicy but were pleasantly mild! The octopus was tender and soft. The paella was flavorful and nicely garlicky. Loquita is small and cute. It's a little packed inside once it gets busy, so it was a relief we got seated outside.

A little on the sweeter side, but pretty well balanced and fruit forward. 4/5 // FOOD // Patatas Bravas: yukon gold potatoes, pimentón emulsion, brava sauce, garlic aioli. This appetizer didn't stand out. It's your typical patatas bravas, but it wasn't as flavorful as I've had elsewhere. 3/5 Ensalada Invierno: roasted kale, baby beets, marcona almonds, orange supreme, coca bread, manchego foam. Very smoky! I was surprised how much the kale took on the smoke of the grill, but it was very different. 2/5 Mariscos: bomba rice, manila clams, jumbo prawns, grilled squid, squid ink, green peas, garlic aioli. The star of the show and absolutely delicious. It was so flavorful and the grilled squid was so tender and melt in your mouth delicious. 5/5 Overall, even though the starters were a miss for me, I would definitely come back for the paella and drinks again, and also to try a few of the other dishes.

I'm still thinking of the pistachio gelato here. Hands down the best pistachio flavored gelato in town! I love how they served it with pieces of pistachio. First bite was heavenly. It's marinated artichoke and fava bean spread, confit garlic, pine nuts, mint, and olive oil. Served with toasted bread. This was excellent! It's comparable to hummus, but with a totally different flavor profile. Easily serves 2-3 people. I also ordered the Crudo. It was light, delicate and so fresh! This one is not shareable because it's too delicious to share. For cocktails you can't go wrong with a Spritz. I tried the Torino Spritz which was perfectly made and refreshing. Those recommendations gave us an easy place to start, and neither dish disappointed. We were seated on the outdoor patio beneath the trees, surrounded by greenery and warm string lights. It felt comfortable and intimate, especially as evening settled in. This would be a great setting for a date night, dinner with friends, or anyone who prefers a lively restaurant without sacrificing conversation. A generous bowl of seasoned popcorn arrived first and disappeared quickly. It was crisp, savory, and a fun alternative to the usual bread basket. We ordered several rounds of the West Coast oysters, served ice cold with lemongrass and Thai chili granita. They were fresh and briny, with enough brightness and subtle heat from the granita to complement them without overpowering their natural flavor. Oyster lovers should put these at the top of the order. The fried chicken was another standout. The crust was deeply crisp while the chicken remained juicy, and the creamy grits underneath made it especially satisfying. Scallions and plenty of house-made pickles brought freshness and acidity to the plate, balancing the richer elements. This is a substantial dish and an ideal one to share. The menu lends itself well to ordering a few plates for the table, which worked perfectly for us. We paired dinner with wine and appreciated being able to take our time rather than feeling rushed through the meal. The Lark delivered exactly what we wanted from a Santa Barbara dinner: excellent oysters, a fried chicken dish worth sharing, an inviting patio, and a relaxed evening over good food and wine. A 5/5 experience and we would certainly work with them again. We were in contact with Serina for about a year before the wedding and she was very accommodating, responsive, and helpful throughout the entire process. We initially met with her to discuss our vision, had a food and cake tasting, and also a final walk through with our coordinator to ensure everything was smooth. In terms of food, atmosphere, and service, I would want to go through all three in detail: 1) Food: We had a lunch style buffet and the food options were fresh and many of our guests gave very positive feedback and took shameless second trips. Serina and the owner (Patrick) were able to source many of the ingredients seasonally and cater to our guests' palate (Asian-inspired, etc.). We had a tasting and they took our feedback into consideration in earnest. Moreover, our strawberry cake was AMAZING. 2) Atmosphere: The restaurant had a great layout for our party size (~90 or so) with seating inside, outside, and upstairs. This arrangement allowed us to have an intimate reception despite having a lot of guests. The decor in the restaurant is minimal, which allows customization to make the space truly our own. State & Fig allowed us to borrow a few decorations, which was generous. 3) Service: The two points before were already excellent, but State & Fig's outstanding service took the lunch reception to another level. Serina was a joy to work with in terms of bringing our vision to life and was always there to make things easy for us. Patrick ensured that this was a special day for us, and encouraged us to soak it in and enjoy it as much as we can. And the wait staff and servers on the day of were professional and attentive. For that, we are immensely grateful. There were other restaurants that we toured before selecting S&F, and it was clear that hosting the reception would simply be a transactional business affair. This felt like a genuine desire to make our special day a memorable experience. Overall, a 5/5 experience and we hope that others will be able to have State & Fig host their special day. P.S. A funny aside: we met a couple sitting next to us during our tasting, who were returning to celebrate their anniversary after getting married at S&F. They told us we were in good hands and not to worry, and we AGREE.

This is Indonesian food like Taco Bell is Mexican food. I understand you're tailoring to your…read morecustomers, but come on. To start, the host was lacking any type of personality and SO MUCH GREEN ONION! The space was pretty cool, but seemed like that's the only thing it had going for it. *Krupuk with sambal and peanut sauce- Not sure where this krupuk came from, but not the same krupuk I grew up with. No deep fried shrimp flavor. Tasted like bland rice cakes dipped in garlic. The peanut sauce tasted like burned peanuts with kecap (pronounced kee-chup, not kee-kap). And the sambal, tasted like it was bought at a grocery store and watered down. *Chicken Satay - First mistake was ordering chicken satay when it should be named Sate Ayam. But considering there was no flavor to the chicken, I guess chicken satay fits. And using chicken breast with no seasoning, at least I didn't taste any, was the main mistake. *Nasi Goreng - One of the biggest and most known dishes of Indonesia, such a huge let down. Maybe I have too high of an expectation. But a huge lack of flavor and the rice texture was too mushy. Like it was not 1-2 day old rice like it's supposed to be. The giant chunks of onion was.... Well..... giant..... *Braised chicken - the perkedel kentang was a decent addition to the braised chicken. The coconut sauce was a good choice to add on to this dish. This dish is the only reason why it's not a 1 star review. Chicken was cooked near perfectly with a lot of flavor from the coconut sauce. The peanut sauce needs a lot of work, give the choice of white or dark meat for the satay, don't use so much green onion, make fresh sambal, use the right rice or fry it up at a higher heat, dice up those onions for god sake, use real krupuk or call it something else, teach the staff how to properly pronounce things, and FLAVOR FLAVOR FLAVOR. If this is supposed to be "Inspired" by a culture that is known for so much flavor, seems like y'all need more inspiration.
