I called Payless Water Heater & Plumbing and the 'technician' (mind you not a licensed plumber)attempted to light the pilot but was not able to. He said the gas control valve needs to be replaced. He said it would take about 45 minutes and it would be a charge of $629. The water heater is still under warranty so that price is only labor!!!! I called a licensed plumber, he took his time and was able to light pilot; hot water is on and no repair required ... What a racket this company is!!! Who makes $629 for 45 minutes of work .... BUYER BEWARE with this company! I had to pay $59 for a 'service call' and he gave an incorrect diagnosis ... so sad. UPDATE: Per telephone conversation with Payless Water Heater management, they have decided to revisit their pricing structure -- especially for small repairs. I appreciate their being receptive to my feedback. Thank you Payless!!!!

I first met Matthew when he helped a friend's father deal with numerous gas leaks in a mobile home. It was a difficult situation, but he was responsive, professional, and thorough. Later, after we moved into a home in Lancaster, I asked the company to travel from Simi Valley to help overhaul several parts of the plumbing system. The house needed a new regulator and cleanout, and an addition had been plumbed incorrectly with the hot and cold lines reversed. They also replaced an older water heater with a tankless system and rerouted portions of the gas piping as we converted more appliances and systems to electric. They handled several additional problems that demonstrated both persistence and honesty. A serious clog in the main kitchen drain line took more than two hours to break through, but they stayed with it until the line was cleared. During the home inspection, we had also been told that approximately ten feet of piping beneath the house appeared cracked and might need to be replaced. After performing a full video inspection of the plumbing system, Matthew's team determined that the marks were likely only surface scuffs and that the pipe was safe to continue using. Their willingness to give an honest assessment instead of recommending an unnecessary replacement meant a great deal to us. Most recently, they helped at a Scottish Rite commercial building where more than sixteen feet of older cast-iron drainage piping had collapsed. The affected section included multiple connections serving different drains in one of our primary bathrooms. They replaced and rerouted the damaged piping, charged a very fair price, and once again delivered quality work. It is rare to find a plumbing company equally comfortable handling mobile-home gas leaks, a major residential overhaul, difficult drain problems, video inspections, and complex commercial cast-iron drainage repairs. I needed the work to be done right away since I had a new washer being delivered the following day and because my faucets were so old and corroded, both the cold and hot water faucets ended up needing replacements. Brendan gave me 2 quotes which included a worst case scenario where they would have to cut through the drywall so I appreciated him for preparing me for the two possible scenarios. As it turned out, his guys showed me the issue where they had to cut through the drywall in order to remove the old faucets since the angle of the box made it difficult to remove them with a pipe wrench. In the end, they were able to replace both faucets, install a new box and even did a good job of putting the cut drywall pieces back on to so that the pipes would not be exposed. The guys were very courteous and professional and cleaned everything up once they were done. The price was comparable to other quotes I received but I chose Best Coast Plumbing because Brendan was so personable and went out of his way to accommodate my schedule. I will definitely call him again for any future plumbing work.

All of the Conejo crew were helpful in explaining what and why they were doing The job site was cleaned up before they left, and Conejo heating and air referred us to a very good plaster and drywall person to complete the job. ALC Plumbing came out to my home in L.A. and I am not HAPPY! The brothers (plumbers) came to my home in a timely manner, that was great BUT they spend a large chuck of their day texting on their phones. I don't live in the Stone Age and I understand that people text now-a-days but spending 1/3 of your day texting when I have plumbing problems is a no-no in my world. They failed to cover up my furniture when they started cutting into the walls. That was also very disappointing as I was told that all my furniture would be covered. Once the work was finally completed I ended up with a leak in my new pipes. Overall I did not have a good experience and I DO NOT recommend this company. read more

If I could give 10 stars I would. Alex is the most honest Plummer we have encountered. We had another Plummer come out and did a sub par job. Used the wrong materials and charged us for unfinished work. Alex was very fair in his pricing and really spent the time to explain our options. We also had him walk around the house to make sure everything was up to code and safe. Of course we found issues. He will be getting all of our work. He did a couple of other things I needed while he was here, and then came back when the correct dishwasher arrived. Hughes popped up on Yelp and after reading several reviews, I reached out. I was able to easily self book an appointment online and some to Brandon on the phone first thing in the morning. He was incredibly responsive, knowledgeable, and took the time to explain things to me, all before ever coming out. He indicated a third party would need to get involved for my particular issue, and provided a local recommendation and contact info. Brandon even offered to come out at the same time as the third party to stay on the same page. Ultimately, I ended up not moving forward with Hughes for reasons that had nothing to do with Brandon. But like I said at the beginning, I won't hesitate to call again if I'm ever in need.

They came to our home and within 2 minutes was giving me a quote of $17.5k. Didn't look at the pipes or listen to me at all. I told them I didn't need the kitchen pipes redone, only the bathrooms, and he told me kitchen pipes are always they worst, so we'll do that, too. He said they'd tunnel 6 ft under the foundation of the property, putting someone completely under the house without looking at how it was built or the current state of it. When I asked him questions he was clearly annoyed with me. We've had lead pipes in places, but when I asked about it he said we have good water pressure so I don't need to worry about lead. That makes no sense. After that I stopped asking because I figured we would just be wasting time. I knew at that point I wasn't using this company. They never sent me an estimate or followed up at all. Every red flag in the book. I'd be very careful with this company.

The receptionist, Nancy, was friendly and helpful and called a few times to confirm the appointment. Since I work full time, I had my mom at my house to let them in. The technician took a look at the problem and went outside for what seemed like a long time to my mom, but came back and replaced the tank-to-bowl kit and the flapper. He didn't communicate the problem to her or give her an estimate of the cost. An hour and a half later, he gave her a bill for $342.50. She told him, if I knew it would cost that much, I would have bought a new toilet. He charged $192.50 for 90 minutes labor (much of the time was spent getting basic parts which he should have had on his truck and talking on the phone), $25 for the flapper (fine) and $125 for the tank to bowl kit, a part which retails for $8-$25. I called the company to question them on the cost. Nancy listened to me and said she would talk to the plumber and get back to me. A few weeks went by and I hadn't heard anything. I called again. Nancy told me she had talked to the manager and he agreed to give me a $50 credit on my next service. I told her that wasn't acceptable because my mom had paid for the service and I wanted her to give her the money. Who knows when I would need plumbing again? (And, after this experience I certainly have no intention of using them.) Also, interestingly, she mentioned the person who performed the service for me was no longer with the company! She said she would talk to the manager again and get back to me. Another week has gone by, and I have heard nothing. To top it all off, the part they used is really cheap. The handle is very loose and you have to hold it down for a few seconds to get the toilet to flush. Benton's reputation has been flushed down the toilet by United Plumbing.
