One day to come out and take measurements, then scheduled a team to come out and place the carpet which was done in a standard days' work. Based upon…read moretheir recommendation, I hired Carpetland to replace the carpet in my upstairs hallway and the stairs to the first floor and basement after my wife slipped and fell down the stairs on some old carpet. We replaced the carpet with the same hardwood that we have on the first floor. The job went fairly well. There was a language barrier, as the crew that was sent either did not speak English, or did not speak it well. There were a few hiccups, but they were resolved without too many issues. Fast forward about 7 months. I decided to surprise my wife while she was out of town and had the first floor refinished. I specifically asked if the job could be done within my timeframe while my wife was out of town. While I was told that there would be no problem, I was not told that the tradeoff would be only one coat of polyurethane instead of two. That second coat makes a huge difference! Again, a crew shows up and language is an issue. I tried communicating as best I could, but they did not seem to understand. Dust control was a major issue. I am still finding areas of my house other than where the work was done covered with dust. The floor was gouged just inside the front door. Whoever was using the sander must have been doing on the job training. You can see where he changed directions with the sander and I still see swirl marks on the floor. The foyer was not sanded evenly, but the crew leader swears he could not see it. After registering my complaints, John-the sales rep-was very apologetic and offered to send the crew leader out to make things right. Roberto came back two days later and tried to gaslight my wife and I. He insisted that there were two coats of polyurethane on the floor...even though he wasn't not even present when it was applied. He did (mostly) fix where the floor was gouged. The non-English speaking crew returned the next day to apply a second coat of polyurethane. It is interesting that she spoke English well enough to ask for payment before she left. Once the floor dried, I noticed spots that were missed. I reached out to John again and he assured me that he would have Roberto come to address any concerns and he would return with him. It was at that point that I made the mistake of paying the invoice. I have not heard from John since. My next project involves replacing all of the carpet on the second floor with hardwood floors. Guess who will not be getting the job?

Update to below: we paid 7k and do NOT recommend them. Facts (not opinion):…read more - no warranty - did not complete all agreed upon work yet was paid in full and refuse to Do The Right Thing and return for about 2 hours more of final work - ran 2 days late and we had to help clean up the inside for them to get out (then, cleaned up the yard on our own after they left) and it was well into the night so all were exhausted and guests were arriving any minute so no final walk through - when we did our own walk through and discovered a critical water-related malfunction for the brand new vanity installed in bath, they refused to return to fix - we had pretty good relations but - suddenly after being paid in full - they turned immediately hostile/rude/uncivil and refused to fix or finalize remaining work - they said they are a brand new biz and seek reviews; we had wanted to give an excellent review because we support small solo-owned businesses but, based on above facts, we do NOT recommend them Military families serve in many ways and for contractors to scam hard working military families is wrong. Example: We went well over budget because the price modification never took place when, at the start, the HOA said they could not paint 50% of the exterior so they were supposed to do other stuff in place of the $900 deposit (50% down payment) for 1st phase (of which they added on $100 without agreement). They painted the covering for 2 sides of the 4-sided HVAC but this did not come close to the 50% substitution. We asked them to do other stuff like change toilet handles, open air vents, fix a crooked window pane but they did not. The right thing to do would be to carry out the original agreement of add-ons - technically substitutes and not add-ons - when HOA caused us to modify and wife devised a list of all relatively easy things like place a bar inside tub, adjust the gate so it will open, etc, but they ran a couple of days late and well into the night and left without a final walk through. We hope they will return for these final items (about 2 hours of final work), and told them we would not ask for X money back because we did not think they would return X money. They are hard working, but did walk away with more money for doing less than what we had all agreed upon, and that is why we went well over budget. Fingers crossed that they will Do The Right Thing.

He sold me kitchen cabinets, started the kitchen left the work half incomplete. Yes, he took the money and did not finish despite my best efforts to get him to finish. To make matters worse, he used mismatched, used white shaker cabinets (that he buys through local auctions) throughout the kitchen. I cannot even find matching doors and trim. No contractor wants to finish this job up and nearly all of them have advised me to buy new cabinets. To do the job right, I will have to tear out all of the cabinets and start over. He is constantly sweet talking, always promises a lot, never listens to what you actually want, always behind schedule, and always under impression that he's doing you a favor. He promised me to come fix any deficiencies in my bathroom on demand after completing work FOUR MONTHS behind schedule. As if I really want to see this guy in my house weekly for the rest of my life. And he simply does not understand what quality means. I am not going to redo some of the things that he did, because I have no time or money for re-renovation, but they way he put some things together in my bathroom was plain odd. That and things started breaking a week after he left. Nothing major, but you get the picture...

He came here recommended by my realtor as a first time home buyer. Big mistake that I will never repeat ever again. It's a shame I paid thousands to learn this lesson. I trusted Manuel with demo and renovation for kitchen and bathrooms and was burned. I was going to bury the hatchet until he co-sponsored an event with the real estate team. This post is to warn first time home buyers / owners / renovators to do your research first and watch your contractors like a hawk. I admit if I were on the job site more often, I could have nipped these issues at the bud. We canceled our contract with him midway out of sheer horror in his continued mistakes with our flooring (he tried twice and failed). After kicking him out, we discovered we have to undo his framing, mechanical, and electrical work - pretty much anything after demo must go. Here are the big issues: *** Flooring failure shows AESTHETIC AND TECHNICAL deficiencies Look at the tile job in the photos. We have uneven tile spacing, most evident in the edges, gaps so huge that trim can't cover it, gaps in places where tile should have been slid under the trim. Technical is in a separate item *** Electrical installed NOT TO CODE AND WITH SAFETY HAZARDS He used hidden junction box and unprotected cables. Look up "hidden junction box" for the safety and maintenance issues that accompany something that would have been hidden behind drywall and cabinets. Cables were routed through studs without protection. This means any screws/nails for cabinets may hit the cable, with shocking results ***Framing is not square and is just SLOPPY. ***Taking my tools shows CARELESSNESS. Sanding poles, pliers, a pickaxe (WTF)? I began asking him and his son, who relayed the message on to their workers, who returned with shrugs. I then began watching them like a hawk and they nearly packed away a battery charger for my lawn tools. I chalk this up to clueless versus malicious intent. ***Bathroom exhaust fans installed backward and shows LACK OF COMMON SENSE Using logic, the exhaust ducting should run to the eaves (edge of the roof) as air is pushed away from the hope. Doing so minimizes bends in the duct. He had the ducts face inward toward the ridges... And we can't simply turn around the fans now because they're too close to the eaves ***Flooring failure shows lack of TECHNICAL competency Manuel didn't bother to check sub floor flatness fully, causing us to waste time, material, and money by discovering the issue after the tile was mortared down. We then found out he used the wrong type thinset for the install. Technical failure #1. He tried again with the subflooring, installing SLC over CBU, but then we observed huge flex in our floors that was causing cement to crack in perfect 3 x 5 patterns around the CBU. Called in multiple tilers, who indicated he failed to understand that the floor was flexing too much to just use CBU (needed plywood to stiffen it up) I had trust in my realtor and in Manuel, but in the end, I've been incredibly disheartened by the experience. Especially given the electrical hazard, I do not recommend him at all, even for "handyman" jobs, and worry about the work he has done for me that I haven't discovered issues with yet. I have been battling him since I realized his issues in March. Here's the most exemplary quick story of my experience with him that I love to share: He took off my working bathroom's exhaust fan+light assembly to prevent it from falling off as he did demo work upstairs. Told and showed him in July. He came to take photos for a replacement. I battled him to replace it, even looping in my realtor. Manuel finally dropped off just a plastic fan cover (no light assembly) late October. This is exemplary of the level of service I have come to expect of him, and I do not wish this fate upon anybody else.
