My bf and I ate at Alaska Fish House during a cruise stop in September. It was a Sunday and there were 3 ships total in port. We went around noon and the line was pretty long. It moves at a steady pace though. I'd say I was waiting no more than 20 minutes. For us the wait was worth it however. We shared a cup of the Smoked Salmon Chowder and the Alaska Sampler Fish & Chips. Both were excellent! The chowder is thick and creamy, and loaded with a generous amount of salmon. The sampler was also decent portion. Neither of us walked away hungry. The salmon in the fish & chip sampler was a surprising favorite. Makes you wonder why more seafood places don't batter and fry up salmon - it just works! There are tables inside and bar-style seating on the outside dock. Highly recommend the outside seating if it's available. The views of the water and surrounding mountains are perfection. read more

This place was a nice treat after my parter and I had a fishing excursion in Ketchican. It was nearing the end of the day, so there were not too too many options on where to eat, plus factor in the rain. This place was great as it was nearby the cruise port. We tried the cod fish and chips and the AK tacos. Both were delicious! We got our tacos blackened and they were super tasty, served on a hard shell. There were plenty of fries with each of these entrees, and their fries were crispy and had a nice smoky flavor! We also tried a small dessert they had in the fridge that was served in a little cup, sort of like an oreo cheesecake with a peanut butter cup, that was delightful! The Alaskan Fish House is a foodie landmark when visiting Ketchikan. IYKYK, the line is always insane and although it moves quickly, it is absolutely a tourist trap. The line starts outside of the front entrance and after you order, you scavenge for a seat to eat your meal. There is outside seating, inside seating, and rail seating in the back which is probably the best because it is less crowded and has great views of the waterfront. Inside it is very loud from the crowds all gathered waiting for their greasy fish and chips which is the most popular entree. Their prices are definitely on the tourist side and there is no good deal here other than it's popularity. This is not bad but I don't think their fried fish is as good as their grilled/blackened fish because of the oil. The place is located close to the pier so very convenient if you are coming from the cruise lines. The place is popular but they do have enough seating that although you may need to wait a bit you can eventually find seating. It's rustic and a fitting place for the kind of food they serve. The crab is ridiculously overpriced. The fish and chips is also expensive but at least you get to pick the fish between salmon, cod or halibut. The breading is slightly thick for my liking but my main problem has to do with the oil. I usually prefer fresher oil. The food is ok. I think the blackened salmon is probably the best bet for most of the items they offer such as the rice bowls or the tacos. You order first and then you get seating. They clean up quickly so if you wait for a table you don't have to wait long. Overall it's a food tourist spot that has overly expensive food but not bad enough to avoid. On a recent Alaskan cruise, this was our lunch spot during the Ketchikan port day. As it's located in a very busy shopping district and next to the Lumberjack show, this is a popular spot. On a drizzly July day with several cruise ships docked, we waited over 30 minutes during the prime lunch hour to order our food, with the line far outside the door and onto the sidewalk. But the line moves fast and we found seats in the 2nd dining room (there's also outdoor seating weather permitting). The food came quickly, a little over 10 minutes after we ordered. My wife chose the Alaskan Sampler Fish & Chips, with one of each of the 3 fried fish options: Pacific Cod, local Silver Salmon and local Halibut. It also came with a generous portion of fries as well as a side of coleslaw. Of all the fish, the halibut was her favorite. She surprisingly enjoyed the coleslaw, as it was dressed with a house-made vinaigrette and wasn't sweet (like many other places use mayo and relish). There was malt vinegar and ketchup on the tables. My salad had a huge salmon filet covering it, with vinaigrette on the side. It was very filling, and I felt better about myself for choosing a healthier option at port after days of overeating on this cruise. We did order sodas with our meal. There is a self-serve soda fountain with free refills. There is also a small bar inside the dining room where you can order draft beer as well as wine and cocktails. read more

We stopped by for a late lunch at around 2:30pm. There was a long line but it was moving at a decent pace. It also helped that they have the menu posted by the door so you can take a look at it and decide what you would like to order while you wait in line. They live up to their name and offer fish & chips (cod, salmon, halibut), burgers (halibut or salmon), fish tacos (halibut or salmon), fish & rice bowls (halibut or salmon), smoked salmon chowder, salad, and Dungeness crab. This place is delicious but prepare to wait. There was a 30 minute line when we went but it was worth the wait. Once we got in there were some basic quinoa bowls that you could get. That was nice as I eat mostly plant based. However this is a fish shop so they have halibut and salmon options. We got the salmon and halibut fish tacos and fries. I really enjoyed the salmon. The place is bigger than it looks as there are two dining areas. You order and pay at the counter. We went overboard and ordered three entrees of fish and chips because that's what they feature. Deep-fried Salmon, DF Cod, and DF Halibut. Plus, we tried their Smoked Salmon chowder. Cod was the best, Salmon was weird, and Halibut was good. The fries and chowder were also decent. 10/10 highly recommend, this place is so yummy! I only tried the tacos so I can't speak for the other menu items but man, oh man! The tacos and fries were fantastic. When you walk up, they have a counter where you can order to go out to dine in and then I believe it is open seating. They also have a bar where you can order drinks but no seating at the bar. There is seating inside and outside, the staff is super friendly and helpful, would definitely come to this place again the next time we're in Ketchikan. Went to this place during one of our cruise stops during our Alaska cruise. We saw a big line and we knew we had to try this place. They service fish in different form factors such as a taco, fish and chips, or even a rice bowl. I decided to try the fish and chips and got the sampler which consisted of one of each fish (cod, salmon, and halibut). The fries had a smoky barbecue taste which complimented really well with the fried fish. The fish was crispy and the picked coleslaw helped balance out all of the fatty food from the fried fish and fries. The halibut was my favorite piece as it was flavorful and tender, I can see why they charge way more by the piece for it. The salmon chowder was also good but very heavy, I recommend sharing the chowder with someone as it is a lot of food. Overall, I would come back if I was in the area but I wouldn't wait longer than 15 minutes in line. 4/5 read more

Tourist trap that unfortunately has 1) overpriced mediocre food and 2) the customer service of an angsty teenager. Let's start with the first point since that's what you're here for: The batter on the fish and chips is well-fried but bland. The dungeness crab is nothing to call home about. Save your money and buy crab from Costco or across the street--unless you want to spend $50 for 1lb of mediocre crab. The fries and salmon chowder are honestly the best part as other reviews have indicated. But everything is absurdly overpriced and nothing special. The latter point is what drove my rating from a 3 to a 1. Seating is self-serve. Tables are packed inside, so naturally after ordering food, we find available seating at the tables in front of the restaurant. 25 minutes later, a young girl with blonde hair brings out part of our order along with a snarky comment, "Next time, can you guys let us know if you're going to sit outside." Excuse me? Next time, why don't you tell me where I should sit if the tables DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF your restaurant are not an area you check when serving food, despite there being a sign about seating literally next to those tables? Then a second girl with red hair comes out and adds, "You guys can't drink alcohol outside." We apologize and explain that we didn't know. "Well there are signs everywhere." Okay. There are literally NO signs that say that (I challenge you to take a look through all the atmosphere photos from other reviewers and find one with the sign about 1. "notifying the staff you'll be sitting outside" and 2. "not bringing alcohol to the tables in the front") EXCEPT at the back patio of the restaurant... which no one would see if they're sitting inside or in front. Of course, we still respect the restaurant rules and move our stuff to their back porch "seating" (5 chairs propped against a fence with a 4-inch ledge) and finish dining. Upon leaving, we were met with glaring stares from the 2 girls behind the counter. Absolutely unacceptable behavior from a highly rated restaurant. Here's a tip for the waiters: if your customers make a mistake, kindly redirect them rather than assuming they did it with malicious intentions. And don't double down on your accusations if the customer apologizes. Here's a tip for cruisers to get better food for better value: try the fish and chips or fish tacos in Juneau at Deckhand Dave (MUCH tastier and MUCH cheaper at $21 for Halibut fish and chips), and eat at other local restaurants in Ketchikan instead. read more

Unpopular opinion... We were told by a man in line that this was the best place for fish in Ketchikan. We were excited, even with the long line and long wait. We ordered and sat, after a long wait it was delivered, they forgot to give us one of the meals we ordered (but she didn't ring it up) so husband had to get back in line and wait again. Staff wasn't friendly (other than the girl taking our order). They were out of Halibut (you're literally a fish restaurant and on an ocean), that was fine though. I came to Ketchikan from an Alaska Cruise and wanted to try out some salmon in the "Salmon Capital of the World". I chose this restaurant as it was nearby and had this famous "Salmon Chowder". I ordered my food relatively fast and I easily found a seat in the large seating area. The staff were really nice and made sure I was getting a good experience. I got the salmon fillet and the salmon chowder. The salmon fillet was very delicious and had a nice savory taste. I like the grilled texture. The salmon chowder was warm and so creamy, making it perfect for a relatively windy day at Ketchikan. There were a lot of salmon pieces there too. The long line was intimidating, but during our 45 minute wait, several customers were walking out and said "it's worth it!" encouraging us to stick with it!
