I was referred to AK Endodontics Specialists by my regular dentist, who wasn't sure what was going on with a tooth of mine and felt that I may need a root canal. No cavity, nothing weird, just out of the blue, massive pain.
AES was great in getting me in quickly, the same morning I called. I wasn't sure what to expect because I've never had to deal with an emergency appointment before. When I got back to some weird machine, I wasn't introduced to the doctor or whomever was taking the images... I thanked him kindly for getting me in so quickly, where I was merely met with a monotoned statement 'well we had an opening'.
During the review of the images and several cold tests to figure out the problem, suddenly I'm told I need to figure out which tooth is causing the problem because he's getting mixed signals. I had difficulty because he was putting me through a great deal of pain and I told him clearly which tooth I thought it was. Then bam, I need to have a root canal. Literally, right then and there. They had nothing to calm me, no gas, nothing... just ready with needles to block the pain and get started. Having never experienced something like this, I was ridiculously nervous and they were not calming in the least. Luckily my husband was there for me.
The procedure was apparently harder than usual and took about twice as long... dr said it was a rare case. I was able to point to a couple instruments during the procedure and he would then explain to me what it was and what he was doing; that helped immensely. He didn't really talk much, which is generally okay, but not knowing what was going on was stressful. Odd too, his assistant didn't speak at all, didn't touch my shoulder for comfort or anything... very strange.
Admittedly, I feel he did a great job of the process, however I hope I don't ever have to do it again. After all was said and done, he was wonderful in explaining things to my husband to care for me, along with giving us his home and cell phone number in case there were any problems with my healing.
Having an emergency dental procedure is definitely not something anyone wants to do, but if you don't need gas or anything to calm you, I would recommend AES, however if anything like that makes you anxious, I highly recommend you getting something in advance to help you through the procedure. Three days later and I'm no longer in pain, just a mild ache where all the needles went in to put in the block. read more
