I visited the salon for the first time this week to get a subtle balayage on my natural hair after no color for many years. Here are my a few takeaways from my experience: 1. Customer service by the stylists is excellent. Maddy (color) and Kelsey (cut) did a great job making sure I was relaxed and comfortable at all times. 2. Quality of the work and stylist knowledge is great. Both stylists were able to make awesome suggestions on the few details of my hair ideas. I LOVE the results. 3. Salon feels high end. 4. Prices are reasonable for the quality 5. The perks are great - complimentary head/neck massages, snacks, drinks, blow dry bar. Front desk could be a little more welcoming but, I understand they are busy. This is where the experience starts and ends so this could use a few more smiling faces. Alandra is my new favorite! I remember Alan Murphy from growing up in the area - and it's still a top salon many years later. I was back in Spring for a visit and my hair was in desperate need of some TLC. They were able to get me in quickly, my appointment was right on time, and now Alandra is my new favorite hair stylist. I was in on a Wednesday morning getting a blow dry and the two educators teaching the assistants were absolutely amazing they compliment each other very well and feed off each other's energy!!!They seem very hands on and look like they love what they are doing!!! I can't wait to see the future stylist on the floor I love this salon and they really care about being with the new "trends" everyone should come here and get their hair done here, they have a stylist/specialist for every look!!! Pros: Luxury, Pampering, Brittany is a wonderful stylist, and Kes is a wonderful colorist. The shoulder and scalp massage is very relaxing. I love their use of Aveda products and Goldwell color. The products are expensive, but they work fabulously. Hair feels conditioned after a color. The stylists are all very friendly and upbeat, even at the end of a 12-hour work day. Cons: Expensive. The colorists don't also do the cuts, so you have to change stations from color to cut. After a color, you pay $25 extra for blow dry or dry it yourself at a blow-drying station with plenty of styling products for your use. After a color, your colorist takes you to the shampoo station, where an apprentice washes the color out of your hair. You don't go back to see your colorist. You either go to a stylist for a haircut and style or you blow-dry your own hair and go home. read more

This is a great little gem in Vintage Park. The place has got great decor. The staff is universally friendly (even at 8am on a Saturday morning). They have granola, coffee, water available while you wait. If that's not your thing It's close to a Starbucks so you can get a coffee before you head in. Ok.. you're thinking to yourself there isn't anywhere in Houston that ISN'T close to a starbucks, but this one is less than 100 yards away in the same parking lot. There are also a lot of samplers of their various Aveda products in the waiting area. Samplers aren't really my thing but I see a lot of people using them so I thought it was worth a mention. The haircut experience is top-shelf. From the wash (hot towel, scalp massage) to the shoulder massage to the haircut to the rinse out (no hair falling on your clothes all day afterwards) to the style, . You'll love this place, and the price is very reasonable for the level of service you get. My bill is usually around $50 with tip for a guy's cut. Danielle has been cutting my hair for a while now, and it's hands-down the best haircut I've gotten. Go see her for a cut, you won't be disappointed and if you are, they'll make it right. I had my first ever visit today and the experience was great from start to finish. I will start by saying that I am not the easiest client to please, as I am EXTREMELY picky about my hair color. My colorist, Maddy, was absolutely amazing and was able to give me exactly what I wanted. She turned my flat, warm/yellow toned hair into a neutral beigy/bronde dream! I would highly recommend Maddy if you are on the fence about who to see for any of your hair color needs. I also received a haircut from Marissa, who was also amazing! I generally like a salon only due to a particular stylist. Brittany was the stylist of my choice. I have weird hair- fine, curly but a lot of it. So much in fact that people always comment on my thick, full head of hair. It's not think-- it's deceptive so I love when a stylist picks up on that and the fact my hair is curly even when I am wearing it straight. Very energetic atmosphere when I walked in at 9:30 this morning. Staff was quick to greet when I walked in and were very friendly. I made an appointment online very last minute the night before so I had expected that maybe it hadn't shown up by then and that there would be some confusion but nope, they saw my appointment with no problem and I was seen super quick. Had a haircut done by Jill who was great! She did a wonderful job of finding a way to cover up my growing out undercut. Love the short haircut she gave me. It def makes this whole growing out process feel less boring. I've been stuck driving an hour away to Sugarland because I've felt so safe with the salon I went to out there. I came to that salon with a mop of tangled curls and a terrible dye job that went severely wrong by a stylist who has been doing my hair for a decade. After the last job left my hair damaged, shedding, unmanageable and to the point where I was terrified of washing it and combing it because of the hair that would come out in my fingers, I went to this salon, based off of a coworker's recommendation. Being a biracial female, I was a little unsure, but they paired me with a wonderful stylist who has experience with my hair type in many other hair types, named Kendra. She was fun, funny, confident and I knew I was in good hands immediately. She also put me with Andrea, a colorist specialist and who was able to rectify the embarrassing and color I have in a couple of months now. Now, my hair looks the way I wanted it to and the damage is being repaired. It was all fairly priced and by the end of it, I was almost in tears because The hair on my head did not resemble the hair I had walked in with. If I wasn't watching, I would have thought they put a high-priced wig on me LOL. I will continue to see these ladies, I have full confidence they will take good care of me each time. read more

Dreadfully expensive. Damn near the worst cut and color I have ever had. My neighbor has been going here for years and her hair looks fantastic. She has thin, fine hair and has always been happy with it. I, on the other hand, have coarse, thick hair. I had it cut/colored with partial highlights and it cost close to $200. If my hair looked great, I would not be complaining. The colorist did NOT do what I asked her to do and there was no way to tell what she did til I got home and my hair dried, since I never let anyone blow dry my hair, as I do not normally dry it myself. I picked up about 1/2 inch in the very front and said, I like when this is highlighted, so please highlight this part in addition to what you have already been doing. She ended up highlighting only the entire top of my head, meanwhile the rest of my hair is dark and it looks ridiculous. The stylist wasn't much better. The highlighted part looks as though it wasn't cut at all. My hair being coarse, I need the ends cut off quite frequently as it will frizz otherwise, My hair looks like straw and it has never looked this way before. This is the first time I have ever considered going back to a salon to have them fix my hair, but I am afraid they will mess it up even more. I am going to go back to Luis at TGF on Louetta/Grant. This is a quite fancy place, ladies like to be pampered and they do some extra touches ( but not for me, I look as though I don't have money and may have been a one time customer) but it's not enough to warrant a $60 haircut for the least experienced stylist. If money is no object and you can afford the top stylists, go for it. But I had talked myself into "I deserve this now that I am 50" and it totally is not worth it. I could have cut it myself and it would have looked the same. The only good thing is the location - fantastic restaurants and great boutique right next door! read more

Just had my hair done by Alandra, I am absolutely in love with the result. I had an all over balayage done with a glaze. I've had my hair bleached for a while I'm a natural dirty blonde. My roots had a red tint to them (no idea why) and I wanted to go ashy cool toned. Alandra must of glazed my hair about 6 times to make sure I left happy and looking good. What made me really happy is that she took the initiative to make sure it was done correctly. I'm not a confrontational person so in the past at other salons I have left unhappy because I never got the result I asked for. But I had an amazing experience, she even blow dried and styled my hair for free. I know the salon is on the pricier end but it's well worth it. Can't wait for my next visit. read more

I've been going to Alan Murphy for about 2 years now and I am not sure why I haven't reviewed them but I am now! I live in San Diego and I still won't get my hair done anywhere else besides Alan Murphy (whenever I fly into town you will find me there). Once you establish a trust and relationship with the stylists, they never let you down. Teresa does my color and Brittany cuts my hair. Kim is also good at color. They are expensive but it's well worth it if you want fabulous hair. The salon itself is always clean and inviting. The staff is super helpful and really does try and get to know you. I used to be terrified of getting my hair done but now I find myself going into Alan Murphy and letting them do "whatever they think is best." read more

Came here to get my hair recolored because the salon I frequent messed up badly. While making an appointment they assured me that they could do exactly what I requested. However, this was not the case. They did not inform me that whilst having already colored hair adding more color to it would not make it what I wanted so I opted for a lightening treatment. The treatment was lovely and worked beautifully- although, when they cut my hair my appointment appeared to have fallen short. This has got to be the worst cut I've ever had in my entire life. I asked for a trim (obviously nothing fancy) and got a choppy mess. I'm so sad because I loved the atmosphere (even though the ladies doing my hair barely spoke to me, maybe it was a bad day?) and the lightening treatment but the cut I received makes me want to never come back again. read more

They may be great for women's cut and color but my men's haircut was awful. I honestly had to go to Supercuts to get it fixed after spending $60 here. The top was ok although very uneven but I didn't have Supercuts try to fix it as it was already too short in some places. The sides and back were comically bad and unfortunately I didn't realize exactly how bad until I washed it later. The left and right sides were different lengths and the back was so much longer it looked like I was trying to grow a mullet. The stylist did not seem the least bit interested in fixing it. read more

This place it's terrible, I'm sure they probably have some me good people working there, but my experience with Alandra was terrible. I went to do partial highlights and root color, she did something completely different, I got in at 11 and left at 5 she processed my hair with bleach and toner and then bleach and toner again and she left my hair yellow orange it really looked terrible. I already had blonde hair and it was a nice shade of blonde so I was not trying to do anything out of the ordinary but she was not capable of doing her job right. After all I ended up paying 350 for yellow orange hair. A week later I contacted the salon and they told me to go back to fix the problem I went back and left almost the same as before just a little less orange but still yellow. When I asked why they charged me 350 they told me that I was being charged for a balayage and toner initially it was not what I had asked for. The reason I am writing this review it to prevent anyone to have to go throw this experience. My hair got totally burned and I'm still trying to fix it all because Alandra. read more

I have been a long-time client of Alan Murphy Salon for several years and am disappointed to submit a less than stellar review. This is regarding issues with scheduling, not the hair stylists' performance. I make my hair appointments six weeks in advance and there have been times when the appointment had to be modified by the salon which was fine. However, with the past 2 - 3 appointments, I have had to wait between 10 - 20 minutes in my vehicle before being called in to the salon for my appointment. My current appointment had been pushed up by 30 minutes which was not a problem. I arrived ten minutes early (respectful of my hair stylist's time), and called to advise I was there. The customer service person advised she would call me when my stylist was ready. Ten minutes after my "revised" scheduled appointment time passed with no call from the salon, I called them again from my vehicle to ask if my stylists was ready. I was put on hold and then was told she's almost ready but it would be a few more mintues. At that point, I expressed my annoyance with the scheduling problem and left, as they had already pushed my appointment up by 30 minutes, and then had to wait an additional time after that when making my appointment six weeks in advance! The scheduling aspect of Alan Murphy Salon needs improvement as this has occurred on more than one occasion. My stylist does an excellent job and I am sorry to not utilize her services any longer, but my time is as valuable as theirs, and for scheduling problems to recur is unacceptable. read more

I color my blonde hair red since I have ivory white skin. My very first time to make the switch was at this salon and it somehow got mis-communicated (I was aiming for strawberry blonde to make a slow transition), but ended up with fire-engine red with blonde chunky streaks. I cried, they brought in Tess (one of the BEST colorists in the place) who fixed it to be a beautiful strawberry blonde, and then I was terrified to go back for a couple years. A couple of years later I went in to refresh my red hair that had the roots growing out. The colorist I was with only colored it on the roots, but with a completely different color. So in the end I had a rainbow of colors in my hair! Again, Tess saved the day!! Tess is so amazing, but isn't always available when I go in for my coloring. Andi is just as talented and mixes the color (whether it's a total redo or just a touch-up) with perfection. I've been going as a regular now for two years, despite the wobbly beginnings, the salon has more than made up for it! Made a reservation for 6:15pm today for my girlfriend, Dominque had agreed that they we would have a appointment for dying her hair then an appointment afterward for a haircut. They then proceeded to call my girlfriend once I gave him her number and say the reservation is at 5:30pm when I told him she would still be at work. I made a same day appt which was very accomodating. The place was beautiful and upscale. The stylist was fresh out of school but I'm not picky and wasn't getting a cut so I was happy with the service. The stylist did take a long time and even mentioned she was interested in my profession and had many questions. We chatted as she took over an hour to do my hair in the time it would have normally taken about 20 min. Again, I was fine with that. The style was $20 and I left a large tip. everything was wonderful until i tried to reschedule with the same stylist. I figured the price would go up but it more than doubled. The reason they gave was it took her so long last time. Can someone explain why I have to pay for her to slow down so she can talk and ask me questions? Disappointed. Stylist bordered on rude during the consultation. I kept thinking that she came recommended from the receptionist and that it would be worth it. She didn't check on me once while I waited for color to develop. Left me for my rinse and glaze and didn't return for another 10 minutes after I was back in the chair for my cut. Chopped my hair, which I was not expecting. When I expressed how upset I was and asked her to even it out because I wanted to leave, she argued with me. I literally left in tears. Front desk lady was nice and said manager or owner (I forget which) would call me. I said no thanks, but called back 5 minutes later to say definitely have him (her?) call me. Two days later and no call. And when I got home and tried to fix it, my hair was completely uneven. I had to make another trip for someone else to clean up a very shoddy job. Oh, and a really amateur highlight job to boot. Looks like foils bled, not even or even a pretty color with my skin tone. Moral of this story is listen to your gut. I was uneasy as soon as I sat down, and I should have gotten up with my hair intact. Giving 2 stars as many other people were friendly and helpful. read more

Everything was wonderful at my recent cut and condition at Alan Murphy Salon. I was greeted nicely and offered a beverage when I arrived. I had a nice cup of hot tea while I waited a few minutes for my stylist. The assistant came to prep me for the cut, but I explained that I was going to donate my hair and we would have to wash after the cut. She gave me a relaxing neck and shoulder massage. Then Alex came to ask what I wanted with my hair. She did the "pre-cut" where she divided up my hair into 4 parts and cut about 12 inches off. After that she did the wash and conditioner, with a complimentary hot pariffin wax treatment for my hands. When it was time to trim, she made very expert suggestions on the cut based on my preferences (longer in front, easy to manage). Alex was very professional, knowledgeable, and friendly. I would highly recommend her and this salon. Webopenings was so easy to use and I got exactly what I wanted. The only thing I would change is probably calling ahead and telling them about the donation in the future as it slowed down their flow. read more
