This used to be one of my favorite local stores. The business was built on supporting small, minority owned, local businesses that gave back. Since the new ownership, the goods in the store can be found so many places. Nothing feels unique and the store now feels soulless. Almost all of the original staff have left under the new ownership. The website still claims that this is its focus, but in reality, very few of their items fit this description. I miss the old Alair, with soul, personality, warmth, kindness, and community at its core. It's a shame that under new ownership the business lost all of that. Update: Alair has petitioned for my review to be taken down from Yelp because they didn't like that I made a negative review-I have reached out to Yelp petitioning that I didn't violate any terms. read more

This is neighborhood gift store with a great variety of gifts, clothing and stationary items. There are candles, mugs, puzzles, jewelry, art and unique items that are high in quality and unique. My review is solely for my online shopping experience, but I can say that I can't wait to visit in-person based off of all the great products Alair offers! It only made sense to write my review for Alair on International Women's Day, as Alair is woman-owned and is very hyper-focused on offering products from other woman-owned companies/makers. I purchased one of the "Seattle Women Are Strong" tees and was pleasantly surprised at how quickly I got it. After ordering online, it had already shipped out the next day and I already had it in my mailbox by the end of the day. And that's with settling for regular shipping, too! Not only is the shirt great quality, but Alair (and Viaduct, who they're partnered with on these shirts) gives back to Legal Voice. I'll post information about that below, straight from Alair's site. "A portion of the proceeds from the Seattle Women Are Strong collection will go to Legal Voice, a Seattle-based nonprofit organization that is working to advance legal rights for women in the Northwest. They take on court cases with the potential to improve the quality of life for women; advocate for legislation that advances and protects women's rights; and empower women to advocate for themselves and their families through education." Not only does Alair give back in ways such as this, but they amplify the voices of BIPOC, LGBTQ, woman-owned, and more! I looked at their website for a pretty long time and had to hold out from building my cart even more. I don't get out much these pandemic days. I don't even go to the grocery store, so I'm LOVING the updated website and local delivery from Alair! With the holidays coming up, I messaged asking about gifts from BIPOC-owned companies. And wow -- THEY DID NOT DISAPPOINT. I got an immediate response with many brands to choose from. I was so happy to be able to select from their awesome gifts, support BIPOCs, and shop local, female-owned all at the same time. Also, the customer service is the amazing. I signed up for the email list (you should too) and there was a discount code (see, told you) that I forgot to use during checkout. Ugh, I was so mad at myself. I messaged asking if there was any way I could still use the code... and they adjusted it right away. Who does that??? Shandon does. So yes, more than ever, five stars all around -- prioritizing diversity and inclusion, customer service, and selection. The only hiccup so far was the local delivery. In the instructions, I asked for the items to be placed in my porch box. Instead, they rang the doorbell and left the bag at the door. So my husband got the bag (with his gift in it). If you've got a similar surprise gift situation, I would suggest picking up at the store instead -- something I should've been more careful about so I thought I'd include that here. I was thrilled when they expanded next door and started selling clothes- affordable, everyday wardrobe options for kids, men and women that was sorely needed in West Seattle. If someone told me to choose five things in this store for myself, I'd be there all day trying to narrow it down. A cute tee? A fun mug? Clever card? Useless but essential Knick-knack? Alair has what you need for a gift - for someone else or for you when you just want to treat yourself to something. (Yes, someone NEEDS the pencil with the sassy saying on it!) The shop isn't overwhelmingly large, nor is it too small for you to leave empty handed. The story is bright and airy and the displays are well done. read more

Super cute shop in West Seattle! If you're looking for witty, pun-filled greeting cards, unique gifts for your hipster friends or even just your dad, (Father's Day is coming up) I highly recommend taking a trip to Alair. Items they have also include dog collars and baby items like books and clothing. Seriously, if you have gift needs for someone come here & you're bound to find something. The prices were decent too for a local shop. Always support local! Came here for a Yelp event and was thrilled to find a shop with similar quirky humor. Had a brief conversation with who I assume are the owners and they were both sweet and easy to talk to. Way bummed that there was a line to do the macrame demo but that doesn't go against my experience since it was a Yelp event, in which there was a disclaimer that you might miss out on certain things if you're not early! I would go back for that class but the price is a little steep - perhaps if it was a group payment. Of course we ended up buying our dog a new collar for $15 without the discount. read more

Alair is the best place to shop for gifts in Seattle. Let me share why. First, the owner of the shop is passionate about her mission to give people a chance to find fun and useful gifts for others and themselves. Beyond just "filling the shelves", she clearly works to provide an ever-changing variety of items, from sustainable sources, across a variety of price points. I'm on her email newsletter and it's unbelievable how much energy she puts into knowing her vendors. Real artists supply Alair. Great cards. Buy someone a birthday or baby or whatever card there and I promise it'll be the best one your recipient gets that month. She also has a perfect mix of "Seattle" items (especially West Seattle-specific) along with pop culture things like Ted Lasso or Friends or whatever is cool (I never know what's cool...but they do!). And now they have clothing! I'm a guy who doesn't really do much clothes shopping, and even I like looking at what she has. And there's even more there for women. I visited Alair with a friend for a Yelp Elite event. My friend lives nearby the cute shop and spoke highly of it so I was glad to make the drive from Shoreline all the way to West Seattle for the event. The shop is chic and has every funny card you could imagine and cute gifty items for men, women, and even a few baby gift items. The prices are good for a small independent shop. They had a cute little patio out back which I wonder what is used for when there isn't an event. Due to the crowd I couldn't partake in the free macrame demo craft session however my friend assured me that Alair offers "girls nights" periodically which draw a more local and chill crowd of women with similar drinks/snacks/craft so we'll plan to attend one of those soon! read more

Alair is - hands down - the best gift shop you'll find in the Seattle area. Shandon and her team are the most kind, incredible people you'll ever encounter and they truly love filling their store with unique items curated locally whenever possible. I love going into the store and how every area I look at has multiple items where I think "This would be PERFECT for so-and-so" and always wind up with more things to buy to gift than intended. Her selection ranges from the cat/dog lover to the TV fan, highly inappropriate to just the right delicate words, and has the right mix of ideas for those hard-to-please people in your life. These are unprecedented times and it's hard to know how to support one another. My sister in law has Down Syndrome and is a brittle diabetic. She's been isolated since the beginning of all this in order to keep her healthy. Shandon just opened her doors to Monika yesterday so she could shop before the store opened to the public. Monika prefers to communicate through cards and they are also very much her love language. This is my new favorite gift shop :) It speaks to both the side of me that is salty and hates the world and the part of me that is happy-go-lucky and loves silly things. It's not a huge space, but it's one of the few gifts shops I've been to where I understand everything there (i.e. no items where I'm like "who in the right mind would ever want this?"). I really hope this shop stays around for a long time - I think I've seen different stuff there all 3 times I've been in now so I expect that we'll be frequent patrons. This year on my birthday, all four of my closest friends went (independently!) to Alair for my presents, because they know it's my favorite shop and they would find something there that would make me laugh and make me feel seen. They were right! And it's a testament that none of them even duplicated ideas! Alair is a community treasure with a thoughtfully curated selection of gifts that give back and lots of local indie makers (not to mention hilarious cards to make you feel better about pandemic life). I appreciate the local delivery during the pandemic, and the careful, deliberate reopening that shows genuine care for the community. And I love how when I go in looking for something as random as a pet bereavement card, they run to the back to get a new order that just came in so I can find the perfect thing. This is a little overdue, as I hardly ever post on yelp, but Alair is really deserving of a 5 star review. I love supporting local businesses and this one is no exception. They have a a store filled with great gift ideas and local finds. They curate and stock many fun and whimsical trinkets - it's worth a visit if you're in West Seattle. The best part is their customer service. I have a message board display purchased from Alair that was missing some of the letters/symbols. It was obviously an issue with the manufacturer and not with the shop, but when I reached out to the owner, she took care of it right away. I stopped by a couple days later and they had the missing letters ready for me (they took them out of another box). They made it a really easy and pleasant experience and I was able to use the message board as planned for a birthday event.
