The guy was very considerate and looked at everything, then he called Charles back, who called me, and quoted me $6,500 to replace the entire 250 square foot roof. He kept saying it was 500 square feet, which it definitely is not (he had not seen it in person). I tried to talk through various options with him, but as soon as it became clear I likely wasn't going to spend $6,500 on the spot to replace the entire roof, he became disinterested and eventually hung up on me. I get Charles not wanting to waste time, but the numbers he was throwing at me seemed very large, especially for the situation. He wasn't wiling to talk through things at all unless I was going to commit to thousands of dollars on the spot. Also, after some less rushed research, $6,500 is a very high price for a 250 square foot flat roof. Charles seemed like a nice enough fellow - but I can't help feeling that I narrowly escaped being taken for a very expensive ride because i needed work done quickly - as anyone with a leaking roof likely can relate to!

We called C. Johnston after suffering from sporadic leaks in our new apartment for the last 6 months. Charles, his sons, Santiago and the crew did a phenomenal job on a difficult project that involved laying down a new roof and replacing a skylight at our coop in SoHo. Much of the roof was underneath a large deck that had to be moved (and then reassembled) in order to replace the roof. The deck was put back together in great condition, and the new roof has withstood a few storms already with no leaks. The price was fair (Charles specifically made a point to not oversell a more expensive method when it wasn't needed) the communication was clear & frequent, and the team left my place in better condition then when they arrived. FWIW they're also the only roofers we've had that haven't tracked tar anywhere in my apartment. If you're considering a new roof in NYC, you'd be dumb not to call C. Johnston.

I have a bulkhead up on my roof and, prior to calling this roofer, I went up myself to inspect it. There was absolutely no visible damage. I reached out to them simply to get a quote for general roof maintenance and to add a layer of silver coating. However, the quote I received back included multiple "areas of repair" and alleged damage that was supposedly extensive and required immediate attention. The issue? This "damage" was non-existent before their visit. James, the person who came to do the inspection, performed both a drone and physical inspection. After his visit, I was shocked to see that several areas he claimed needed repair looked tampered with. I did not have before photos to prove my point, but based on my own prior inspection, I am confident that these so-called problem areas were not there beforehand. It truly feels as though damage was created during the inspection in an attempt to upsell unnecessary work. This is not only unethical but incredibly disappointing. I called for an honest maintenance quote, not to be manipulated into paying for repairs I didn't need. I would strongly caution anyone considering this company to make sure you take detailed photos of your roof before any inspection or quote. My experience has completely eroded my trust in their honesty and professionalism. Save yourself the extra cost and go with someone else.

Notice the sloppy tar work on the skylights. He stood me up on December 21st, 2017 to 'scrape off' the visible tar. Never showed and offered $1500 back to use someone else. It's all memorialized in text massages. I've yet to receive any restitution. His work and his word are worthless. Since posting this review this morning, I have gotten threatening text messages from Eden Goldenberg with respect to my livelihood. Beware of this businessman. In response to Eden Goldenberg's message below...the house was built in 2003. I don't consider that to be 'very old.' Update...Filed small claims court suit in April 2018. Eden Goldenberg never showed. I was awarded the total amount by the judge (4K+ court costs). If more dissatisfied customers go up against this dubious character, he will be forced to stand by his work! 11-1-18 The new photos were taken yesterday of a different skylight than the ones previously posted.
