I found VERY little to like about this place. A huge bummer because I was really excited to try it. We went there for lunch during a weekday. Hubby came along and the kids were with us. Service stunk - we waited almost 45 minutes for our food. Hubby's quick lunch break ended up taking him about 1.5 hours. So, not only did the food come late and be of little value, he also had to work an extra hour to make up for the lost time. The kids were restless and begging for food after the first 20 minutes - it made for a stressful outing. The food was over priced. The food portions were seriously tiny. The sushi was mushy and not cold enough. The miso soup was almost nothing but broth. The seaweed salad was TINY. AND, because I ordered the seaweed salad (at an outrageous price) I was not given the FREE cucumber salad. EXCUSE ME???? I get ripped off for my free salad of four slices of cucumber splashed in sweetened rice vinegar because I opted to order an ADDITIONAL salad? You guys are rip off artists!!! The "special" sushi roll we ordered for something like $7 was the size of what you get for about $4 at other places. The only thing that was edible were the dumplings - but they were small and each one cost about $1. That means it was about 50 cents for each bite that you chewed and swallowed. NOT worth it. Besides, you can buy a whole frozen bag of them at just about any Asian market for the price we paid for 5. You know you're in trouble when the food finally comes to the table and you and your husband look at each other and say in unison, "is this it?" and you want to check the item in front of you against the description in the menu because it seems impossible that they are the same thing. We ordered some type of "sushi" bowl (which we were told was like the hot bowl at Sapporo East but without the hot sauce). They lied big time. They offered to add the hot sauce. The hot sauce was hot and sweet - not a pleasant mix with raw fish. The raw fish was a meager portion of tiny little fish chunks - it looked like it was created out of the scraps left over when they make other things. The bill, for what we ordered, was OUTRAGEOUS! About 1.5 hours after we walked in, the toddlers walked away hungry, we walked way hungry, and we felt like we had been robbed. I will NEVER eat there again. I don't usually give 5 stars unless the establishment shows me that they have it all together, to the tiniest details and obviously, the food has to be amazing. Akitas makes the grade. Our party of four got seated right away and felt very welcomed. We started out with the calamari and spring rolls for appetizers and ordered the sushi boat. (Definitely enough for 4 people). The timing of the food delivery let you know that everything was very well orchestrated. We also shared a couple of hibachi dishes. The shrimp and scallop hibachi was very good. My wife had the chicken hibachi, (since she's not a fan of sushi). It was very flavorful. Overall, it's a great place, with great decor, great service and excellent food. I hate to give one star but I really bad a bad experience at this place, like sick in the bathroom bad. First. The quality of the fish was flavorless, fatty and almost mushy. The spicy rolls were flavorless which surprised me and the nigiri I could barely eat and ultimately I as mentioned left me rather unwell. I love sushi and have had so-so sushi in the past but nothing like this, I am not sure if this was a one off for them because I have met others that eat here often but I am not sure if I am willing to give it another go. If you have experienced good sushi, and want to experience it again, steer clear of this place. For those that are pretty easy to please, food-wise (i.e., most of Central PA, land of the chain restaurant lovers), I can see where you'd think it was good. The sushi here is definitely subpar and overpriced. I ordered an Alaska roll (smoked salmon and cream cheese) and a spicy tuna. I have never in my sushi-eating life seen a roll with smoked salmon come out and contain cooked salmon. The cooked salmon that I wasn't expecting was dry and didn't work well with the cream cheese at all. I was expecting raw, as the menu didn't denote otherwise, and that's what you get at every other sushi restaurant that I've been to. The spicy tuna was mushy, not spicy, and poorly rolled. It didn't seem to contain any "crunch" like a normal spicy tuna, and it had no spicy sauce on top either. Total for four non-specialty rolls, edamame and hot tea was about $35.00. Service was pleasant enough, although the owner/manager was walking around in sweatpants, which I felt was a little odd and unprofessional. But, the atmosphere is fine overall. I'm in no way affiliated, but I would highly recommend Sakura on the Carlisle Pike over this place. The sushi is much fresher, rolled well, and less expensive. They also have an all-you-can-eat menu choice for only $17.00, which I basically spent at Akitas for two rolls. And, they offer a 10% military discount. read more

I have managed a privately-owned restaurant in the past, so I understand that many have their good days and their bad days. In my experience, Akitas has never had a bad day. They always receive me with a friendly smile, whether I am eating in or taking out. The sushi is some of the best around. Since I moved to Pennsylvania from New England, I have had a difficult time finding sushi of this quality. After reading over the other reviews, there are a few items that I wanted to point out: Akitas is not a fast food restaurant. The owner takes great care in making every roll. I have grown to appreciate this quality and continue to return again and again with friends and family. When you visit Akitas, you need to expect to spend time there and enjoy your company. The food is definitely worth the wait. I would suggest bringing a bottle of wine and visiting for dinner. The servers are trained never approach the table unless the menu is closed. I realized this after my second visit. When you have decided what you would like to order, be sure to close your menu as a signal to the wait staff. I also felt the need to point out that sushi rolls are traditionally served at room temperature. On another note, the hibachi is amazing. The meat is tender, the vegetables nicely cooked. The dish is seasoned with traditional flavors. A lot of my friends, those that don't care for sushi, have ordered the hibachi and raved about it. The prices are not cheap, but they are not absurd. It is a nice restaurant with good quality offerings. The average meal for two people costs about 20-30$. Akitas is by far, my favorite place to eat in the Harrisburg area. read more

I truly believe that Akita's is the victim of poor location. It took me weeks just to find it as it is tucked deeply within a parking lot strip mall. Once I found it, it became my go-to for ordering work lunches. My only experiences with Akita's has been in ordering for takeaway. I've always been able to phone in and order and simply pick it up. Service in that respect has always been quick, and I've had no problems with missing or incorrect items. I've also walked in for takeaway and had just as efficient an experience. Staff has always been pleasant. The food itself is good, but nothing spectacular. I've tried the regular menu items as well as the specials. I don't have any complaints, but I also don't have any specific raves. read more

I experienced Akitas for the first time earlier this month. I was there with 23 other folks, so a very large group. They have just moved into their new location, and Akitas is now easily accessible and viewed from Market Street. Their lot is a bit tight and the lay out is 'interesting' so if they are busy, you may be looking for parking on the street, which should be no big deal. They are BYOB, and the interior is nicely decorated. Service was fine, and the food was good. They had an interesting mix of traditional-to-this-area rolls and some chef rolls, and I had the Mechanicsburg roll and the Shumai. Both were tasty and fresh, and the roll was well formed and tasty. The size was average, and the temperature was good. They were busy in addition to our group, and they handled it relatively well. Nice folks, nice place, and solid food. I will return! One interesting/humorous thing... they have salt and pepper shakers on the tables. I am not sure I have ever seen that before at a sushi place. read more

DO NOT GIVE THIS PLACE BUSINESS! THEY DO NOT DESERVE IT! I went to dinner here with my father and we had a HORRIBLE experience. We were seated at the bar and waited at the very least 20 minutes and no one came to take our order. My father kindly stopped the older female worker and asked why our order had not been taken while others who arrived after us had their orders take already. She YELLED at my father "If you can't be patient, then you can leave." Keep in mind that we already waited for a while and he kindly asked a simple question, but she had to yell at him. Best Sushi by far on East or West Shore. Don't let the outside decor fool you, amazing food inside! Impressive artistic flair in every roll. Worth the drive past all the other venues in Hershey and Harrisburg. Very personable staff since being a regular. Service at times can be spotty primarily on Friday or Saturday evenings due to limitations on restaurant capacity. Great for lunch or mid-week night out and is a BYOB joint which is great. Only thing missing would be more room and additions of Habachi tables to sit at which i hope would come in time as popularity grows. read more

This is the closest sushi place to where I live, and they are actually not bad. Sure I've had better, but not here here in central PA though. This will be an unfortunate review for Akitas, and a cautionary tale for restaurants who think that their food alone will float customer satisfaction and loyalty. I've dined at Akitas countless times in the past. Their sushi is always above-average, the restaurant is usually clean, and most of the time service is prompt and polite (the younger servers are very nice). However, the other day I was craving a bowl of Udon soup. HUGE craving, in the middle of the Summer. Go figure. I never want Udon, ergo I don't have a "regular" spot to source it. I Yelped it, and Akita's popped up. OK. I should have been wary of another reviewer's warning that their experience with the noodle dish there was soggy and overcooked. Figured the kitchen was perhaps having a bad day. Mistake. Greeted by a perpetually sour-faced older woman (who I've seen before and presume to be the owner). Ordered an iced green tea, cucumber salad, and of course, the Udon soup. The menu lists two versions - Vegetable and Seafood. I ask her if the kitchen could include chicken instead? She stares at me blankly and replies: "Our chicken isn't white meat." Seeing that my request has confused her, I opt for the Vegetable version, as seafood soups in most Asian establishments tend to be a risky endeavor (in my experience), odor and flavor-wise. She takes my order and leaves. When the Udon arrives, I notice that the bowl is TINY, and overcrowded with, natch, a bunch of slimy, overcooked noodles. I poke at the mess with my chopsticks to let it cool, and glimpse two sad pieces of wilted Bok Choy beneath the surface. If this is what passes for "Vegetable," I've obviously missed my guess. And then, oh boy, my first bite. Ever drank from a cup that you know wasn't rinsed out before the other liquid went in? Like drinking water from your morning coffee mug, you can distinctly taste the pre-existing substance, and I'll warrant you probably didn't enjoy the experience. That is the only thing I could equate the taste of this soup to... like the kitchen had made a batch of Seafood Udon, not washed the pot, then over-boiled my Vegetable batch in the same vessel. The taste and smell of old, past-prime mollusks flooded my senses, and between that and the texture, I very nearly gagged. Tried forcing down another bite - no dice. Push dish to the side, appetite completely gone. Sour Face returns, sees bowl of untouched soup, asks if I want a to-go container? Deep breath. In my kindest voice, I tell her that, unfortunately, the soup is practically inedible, and that I don't want to eat it. Explain it is overcooked and carrying a strong odor/flavor of seafood, even though that wasn't what I ordered. She looks at me, half contemplating, squinting (maybe there's a language barrier?), but then turns and walks away. Normally, most savvy restaurant employees (server, owner, or otherwise) will interpret this as a cue to apologize, take the offending dish back to the kitchen to dispose of, and take said item off the bill. When my check arrived, however, it had the untouched Udon still there for $6.99. Cute. I ask for to-go container anyway, since out of personal policy, if I've paid for something, it goes with me. In this case, it went in the trash at Neato Burrito down the street where I walked in to get an actual lunch to fill my stomach that day. Congrats, Akitas! For $6.99, you have permanently lost a solid customer. I've never been so disgusted and insulted by an establishment's lack of grace, and I won't suffer any future loss of funds for your average food and subpar service. The only reason this review has two stars is because I've had better experiences here in the past. Stick to the sushi. read more

Delicious meals yesterday; We had hibachi and Maki/Sushi. All was great, clean fresh ingredients. The spicy salmon maki I had was very fresh and prepared the way it should be.. My family and I love the food here but we've had several issues with the service. They often rush us out at the end of the night and change the closing time. Service is really slow Friday and Saturday nights. The woman hostess (that might be the owner) is very rude and always has an upset look on her face. read more

The owner Mike, used to be a hibachi chef at Mikados on the Carlisle Pike when he decided to try his hand at the restaurant owning business. I think he's doing well although some of his sushi prices are a bit high. I'll go in every now and then to say high and chill out for a little. The bar is a tad small but it's better than nothing. His sushi rice is decent and holds the rolls together well. Service here can be a bit slow since most of the time it's just his wife and 2 other employees, so if you come here at the wrong time, expecting to be in and out, you're gonna be disappointed. Besides, it shouldn't be an in and out thing. Save that for McDonalds. If you're there, try giving Mike free range over something and 90% of the time (at least with me so far) you'll get something you weren't expecting, but great none the less. read more

A great place for everyone. The people are very friendly and are humble. The owner of the restaurant is gentle, humble, but outgoing person. There is a atmosphere here and it says come and enjoy the food with your friends and family. I can't describe the food here. There is something that keeps us coming back for more, and it won't stop anytime soon. What I really enjoy are the appitizers, especially the fried lobster and the fried crab balls. By the end of the call ,the owner (older cranky women) of the restaurant , who was taking the order thought I hung up and stated how annoying I was . Even if I was annoying her while trying to navigate a poorly arranged menu online there is absolutely no excuse for her stating what she did. I have been to Akitas many times at its old Hoover Plaza location and at its nice new location on Market Street in Lemoyne. And I will continue to go back. The sushi there is the very best in Central Pennsylvania. I know because I actually lived in Japan for 3 years and have experienced what fresh sushi is all about. It is a mom and pop owned and operated restaurant which already sets it apart from the bland chains. The restaurant also features hibachi for those who may not yet enjoy sushi. My usual order is the sashimi because I am a huge fan of fresh raw fish. But I have tried just about everything on the menu. The special rolls are also amazing.
