This Jiujitsu academy is the real deal! Unlike other gyms, hard work here truly pays off. I highly recommend giving it a try--yes, ladies, that includes you, and it's a fantastic place for kids as well. My son is excelling, and it's amazing to see such a dedicated team coaching him every step of the way!

After Saturday marathon rolls

American Kickboxing Academy is one of the best schools I have ever attended. Coach Bobby Southworth fosters a welcoming environment where people of all ages and athletic levels are welcomed. In addition, he is a world class MMA and BJJ instructor with decades of experience. So whether you're an aspiring fighter or someone that's looking to get into shape and learn useful self-defense skills, AKA is the place to go to. This is one of the hidden gems of San Antonio.

My children needed a…read morechallenge that would help them grow, build confidence, and have fun while also providing a healthy outlet for any stress from their daily routines. CKO delivered all of that and more. With top-tier equipment and excellent instruction, Coach Chris challenges the kids to stay focused and continuously improve their technique. At the same time, he keeps every class positive, energetic, and fun. He also takes the time to share funny moments with parents, creating a welcoming environment where everyone feels connected. Because of this supportive atmosphere, my children pushed themselves further than they ever had before. They became stronger, learned proper kicking and punching techniques, improved their conditioning, built confidence, and made great friends along the way. If you're looking for a program that helps children grow both physically and personally, I highly recommend CKO Kickboxing San Antonio. The coaches genuinely care about every child and are committed to helping them succeed. We'll definitely be back, and I may even join the adult kickboxing program myself. The workouts are fun, the music is great, and the instruction helps you develop real technique while working toward your fitness goals. Thank you, CKO Kickboxing San Antonio family, for everything you've done for us!

First, the gripes I guess…read more.. The gym has way too many things to do. When I am paying $100 a month to learn various forms of martial arts, I want to show up to locked doors and a gym that's in a 15 x 20 foot garage. Secondly, although the BJJ classes are great, it would be better if they were taught by a blue belt or even a white belt so that I wouldn't feel so insecure about going to class. Also, what's with the one female bathroom??? They don't even deserve one. In many countries women wouldn't even be aloud to train with men, let alone piss in the same building. Another major gripe I have is the fact that when it's hot, they open the front doors! WTF?!? I want sweat dripping from every foreskin and every orafice so that I can punish my opponent with more than just an arm bar or triangle (yes I am referring to my ball sweat). And what's with all those tires laying around???? I never see any cars in the back neing worked on. I don't know maybe I'm missing something. Last but not least, what's with the old bald guy teaching the muay thai classes? He seems to be the oldest guy in the gym. Half the time he doesn't even pay attention to his students. I think he has more of a crush on some of the other fighters and instructors at the gym. I could be a little jealous but I'm not. All that aside.... the place is really laid back which makes for an excellent learning environment. That's why I slapped about a million of those bumper stickers on the back of my Kia Rio. Hopefully it will help me get chicks.

PARENTS BEWARE: KEEP ANY YOUNG CHILDREN AWAY…read more Long story short: We walked in with our 3 year old and walked out 10 minutes later very upset, confused, and concerned for my child's head injury. Needless to say we never returned. Parent's I would suggest some place else and if you decide to still bring your kids in please be careful and speak up if you think something doesn't look right BEFORE your child gets unnecessarily hurt. Here's what happened. Backstory: Our 3 year old started PreK and in his class at his new school there were 3 yr olds, 4 yr olds and 5 yr olds who had just turned 5. In addition to the big age gap our son is very small for his age. He said he loved the school and teacher but was coming home with different complaints everyday. Someone pushed me to the floor, someone slapped me, someone spit on me, etc... We thought martial arts might help him. The incident: We drive past Brazilian Top Team Northeast every day since we live just minutes away. We walked in and there was a class that seemed to be beginning soon. There was a room for parents to the left that had a giant window and seats to see the training area. The man in the picture greeted us and seemed nice enough. He told us we could stay and watch and at that moment our 3 yr old said "I want to try" and we asked him if he could go out there with the younger kids. The youngest looked about 4 or 5. The man laughed a little said yes and offered to lend a uniform. We were all very excited and expected a very basic first day. Maybe some hand over hand teaching, maybe some exercises or even verbal strategies, ("No stop I don't like that") Within a few seconds he has the students get into about 5 lines of 4 or 5 kids. The first person in each line walked all the way across to the other side of the room and faced the line. The next student in line was then instructed to run full speed, wrap arms around the standing student and "take them down". Our 3 year was the last in line. He ran across the room and looked like he was trying to move a statue because the little girl didn't budge at all. The instructor stopped them and told our kiddo to stand in her spot. This is where I became concerned. I thought surely he would be there to walk and talk them through it as his daughter ran up next. But instead he stood back smirked and let his very well trained, bigger daughter wrap her arms around our 3 year old, lift him up, and slam the back of his head to the ground! To make matters worse no one seemed to rush over somehow I was the first one by our child's side picking him up off the ground. I removed the uniform and walked out. I couldn't understand why this instructor would do that and how that experience could ever help our 3 year old become better and more confident. It became clear it was to make his daughter better and more confident. This was no way her fault but I would advise any new parents who have children under 5 years old to just be careful with her because this was about a year ago so she may be close to 5 years old now. But more importantly parents of all ages be careful with this instructor. Just speak up if things are moving too fast on the first day or any day after. There are always other places so I would suggest just try them all out and see what fits your child best.

The instructors at Club KO genuinely care about the people in their class. They will politely correct form and also provide encouragement if they see the class struggling (they never single anyone out). As you walk in, the front desk is always friendly. The instructors (once they know you) will say hi as you walk in. The classes and their content vary based on day and time. If you're reading this and timid about your first class, here's how it will go: Show up 10-15 minutes before class. Be ready to sign a waiver. If you don't have gloves they will provide them for the first class. I'd recommend having your own wraps but I've seen them give latex gloves to people to wear in their gloves. Class starts with jump rope, and then it gets into boxing. You have one 5-minute break in the middle. You will sweat, you will get fit. I would recommend Club KO to anyone interested in getting fit or learning about boxing. And in case anyone is wondering, I've never seen anyone get hit in the head or the body in a class.
