I've had mixed experiences with AJ's Small Engine Repair. They do fix lawn mowers, and I've purchased a 32-inch standard Wright mower from them, so they're clearly knowledgeable about equipment. However, there are some downsides that make the experience just okay overall. Repairs tend to take longer than expected, and the pricing can be a bit on the expensive side. My biggest concern, though, is customer service at the counter. On more than one occasion, when I've taken my lawn mower in for an actual issue--like surging--I was simply told to add Sea Foam instead of having a ticket made or the mower properly checked. If I'm bringing my equipment in, it's because I want it diagnosed and repaired, not brushed off with a quick suggestion. It feels lazy at times, especially when it's not even busy. Customers shouldn't have to push just to get proper service. They have the skills to fix equipment, but consistency and customer service definitely need improvement. They kept my lawn mower for a year. They said they reviewed the piece to fix it but broke the piece and now cant get another replacement piece. The lawn mower is dismantled and possibly missing pieces that they've kept. I also reached out to the company and they said all parts are still in production so there shouldn't be a reason that they couldnt get the part. read more

I had basically a new Ryobi Power Washer that was used twice. The warranty location was to AJ's Small Engine Repair. It sat there for 4 months with me calling every week for the last 1.5 months checking on repair. First they had me pay 48.00 and change for a diagnosis and said it would be given back if they verified warranty work. After 4 months they came back and said it would be $176.04 - they wanted to replace the carburator, spark plug, gaskets and other parts. THIS THING WAS BRAND NEW. I went and picked it up and lost $48. I drove straight to Butler Small Engine Repair in Conroe. The guys there looked at it and said that looks brand new. I dropped it off, no fee to look at it and in 3 hours they called and it was fixed. NO parts! just cleaned the carburator. Cost me $50.00. AJs are a bunch of crooks!!! read more

If you went to AJ's there is a good chance you had to because of your "manufacturer warranty" and most likely your warranty claim was denied "by the manufacturer" and you had to pay out of pocket to get your equipment back. Do not be fooled by that country twang as you come in the door; as another reviewer stated, it can not be described in words the backwoods idiocy of this place. But, make no mistake, these 'country' jackasses are cut throat mafia and gangster as it gets. AJ's is straight up SCUM of the earth. I took a pressure washer to AJ's that had a defective soap injector nozzle; a very common failure and a simple repair. The nozzle was obviously defective; it is a small brass piece that simply broke in half, midway through the threaded section that screws in to the side of the water pump. I pointed out the issue to the apathetic country bozo working the counter when I left them the machine. I also presented my receipt from Lowes that clearly showed the machine to be under warranty. The particular brand is a Simpson with a AAA triplex pump, which carries a five year warranty on the pump. I work shift work, some days, some nights, therefore I have developed patience for these kinds of things because if I am on the night shift I just do not have time before work (because I am sleeping in the daytime) to handle this sort of business. Anyway, TEN DAYS after dropping off my pressure washer someone from AJ's finally called me to tell me that "your pressure washer is missing the soap dispenser injector..." I was like, "yeah, I know that; I told you and showed you that when I dropped it off." Then they wanted to know, "what do you want us to do with it?" I said "are you serious? I want you to repair it; are you able to do that?" This gets better. Next, the guy says, "well, the repair will not be covered by warranty because you have been operating the machine without the soap injector." I asked, "are you joking?" He says, "No." I said, "Sir, you realize that you are NOT ABLE TO OPERATE THE MACHINE WITHOUT THE SOAP INJECTOR right; you do understand that right? You realize that the water just blows out the side of the pump when you turn on the machine and effectively cripples the machine until you replace the soap injector. You do understand this right?" Then the knucklehead says, "Oh..., well the repair is not covered because you don't have the defective part." Again, "...are you serious?" As it happens, I did have the broken piece, even though when it failed, it BLEW OUT of the side of the machine (lesson: wear safety glasses when starting and operating this kind of equipment), I found the piece and kept it. However, they did not ask me if I had the piece when I dropped off the machine. Seriously, this is the business you are in correct? You would think these goofballs would know the right questions to ask and up-front information they need to handle these situations. So I tell the guy I have the broken piece and he says, "well, the girl handling this won't be back until next week..." Again, you must be joking. So they have ONE GIRL, apparently the only one in the office who can read, that is able to handle my issue. So, customers are at the mercy of individual store employee's vacation schedules. So, on day EIGHTEEN, after not hearing back from anyone, I go back to the store to get my pressure washer, assuming they repaired it. I was even ready to pay the additional $20, on top of the $42.90 "estimate" fee. When I arrive, it took the bumpkin 15 minutes just to find my machine. Finally he comes back and says, "It's not ready...", and he says, wait for it, ...wait for it... "the girl handling this won't be back until tomorrow." Un-effing-real. So then this dude acts like, I was supposed to get up and leave. He says "you'll have to come back tomorrow." I said, "I don't think so. Go get my pressure washer so I can get the hell out of this place and be done with you." But this story isn't quite over... I pull around to the side of the building to pick up my machine and some guy brings it out and I notice that the gas cap is off. He noticed it also and quickly put the gas cap on and started stuttering and acting nervous and said, "oh, sorry, so sorry about that." I asked him, "why did you have the gas cap off?" He said, "I have no idea..." So I shook the machine a little to see if I could hear any gasoline sloshing around. The machine had gasoline when I dropped it off. And you guessed it, all the gasoline was gone when I picked it up. This group of people at AJ's are scum of the earth. These are bottom dwelling, parasites who steal and cheat their way through life. The part I needed cost twenty dollars and all you do is screw it in like a bolt. It took 18 days for these morons to do absolutely nothing and charge me $45 for it. However, I got my money back by disputing the charge. read more

If I could give a zero rating I would. We took our pressure washer in because I couldn't get it to start. It took over six weeks to get it back. They supposedly replaced the carburetor. Due to weather and holidays, we were not able to use it right away. We got it out to use it after New Years and it wouldn't start. When we called, we were told too bad because it was out of the 30 day warranty period. They had our pressure washer for longer than their warranty period. What does that say about their ability to do a good repair job. How disappointing that a small business doesn't do more to help their customers. This place is horrible. They take their time to fix whatever you drop off, takes months to fix it, you have to call and show up MULTIPLE times to get any help. Oooh and don't buy anything from them. It will brake down within a month and they will ask you to drop it off and wait four weeks to get it fixed and it is your fault that it broke and you'll have to pay for it. Very Unethical- Stay Away When I dropped my mower off to get fixed, Keith said it would probably be an easy fix because the carburetor just needed cleaning. He then said I would get a call. They were very busy and there was never any mention of an estimate. Two days later I did receive a call saying they fixed it and it would cost $ 144.00. The mower is not even worth $144.00. When I went in the next day, I explained I never received a call for an estimate, which of course I never would have approved. But I did offer to pay over $80.00 which Pat I assume was the manager said it was my responsibility to ASK for an estimate and if I didn't pay the full amount they would keep my mower and sale it. So that is what happened. If they were a reputable company, they would of called me and explained it would cost as much as the mower is worth. DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR BUSINESS. Ok. I just left AJ's and got the most racist look from him, a worker and some other guy in the shop. I explained to him that I needed a single screw to install piece on the chainsaw I had. I was told that I would have to wait 2-3 weeks and leave a 42.00 deposit. I stated for a single screw and his response was that I had to wait and that he wasn't going to place me ahead of other people even for a single screw. I could feel that he didn't want me(African American) in his shop when I opened the door. My wife felt it as well. I have used AJ's several times and have been okay - not thrilled - until this last event. I bought a Stihl weed wacker from them several years back. It performed well but over time I had to set the choke partially on to keep it running. I figured it was probably just an adjustment to the carburetor. Of course it cost me their up front charge to determine and they said it would be another $125 to repair. I should have ask more questions but they are not very willing to entertain discussion. I ask about new machines and even though it was only about $100 more for a new machine I decided to repair. When I picked it up, they put in fuel and ran it for about a minute. I took it home and then realized something was not correct. Took it back and it turns out they installed a new carburetor upside down. They laughed and took it back and after another visit it seemed to work fine and was the correct orientation. A couple of months later it has the exact problem as last time. I called and they said it may be under warranty unless it is a fuel issue. It takes the same fuel and I use the same fuel in a Stihl blower. I have had the blower (also purchase from AJ) longer than the weed wacker and have had no issues with it nor have I had to repair/maintenance. That would suggest that I go back and let them look at it, however, I have to pay them another $85 to determine if it is under warranty.... I think I will go with a different solution. read more

I wish I could give negative stars. We dropped off our lawnmower 12 days ago. No calls. Yesterday we call.. oh.. it will be ready tomorrow. Today we call. Oh, we have to order a blade, it will be ready next week. You had it for 10 days. Then we came to pick up the mower. Told them to forget fixing it. They refused to refund a $42 estimate, even though they didn't repair, didn't call and who knows if or when they ever would of. My dad took 2 of his power tools to A J's to be worked on. After 16 trips over a period of 5 weeks he still doesn't have equipment that is running. He had to take it to another place to fix them. The owner even told my dad on one of his trips to pick up his equipy that they had his power equipment at their house working on it. Unusual?? So after 16 trips over 5 weeks and over $150 in repair bills. He still does not have tools that work and he was told by the other shop that he night as well replace it because he couldn't even get it to fire. This place is a Ripoff! The people at the front desk are clueless about what they're doing. I have had to go back three times for the same part, becuae they didn't know what they were doing. This place is horrible. Dropped off my pressure washer that was under warranty and they said it would be 2 weeks before they could look at it. I left it a bit skeptical. Went back after 3 weeks ( because they never answer the phone ) and was told they just looked at it that day and had to order a part. Waited 2 weeks and went back and they said they were sent the wrong part and how to get it resent. They finally called after 2 more weeks and finally got my pressure washer back 7 weeks later. My last 1 star review of AJ's does not appear on this page. One more try. This place does not have a singe positive review. Customer service is nonexistent at AJ's. The 3 men sitting at the counter were unfriendly and made it appear as if I was bothering them by coming in. I told them that I wanted an estimate on my mower. They wrote up a ticket and said it will be about 3-4 weeks. Then about 3 weeks go by and an older lady called and said it was ready. I asked "what about the estimate" and she it was already fixed. That was a complete scam because all I asked for was an estimate. The repairs cost more than the same new mower itself. My mower works better now but I am still having minor problems, however there is no way I am going back there. Avoid this place!!! read more

I have used Al's twice, because I didn't know where else to go. The first time I ended up trashing the mower because they were so rude that I was mad. I just took in my 10 year old Craftsman riding mower because it wouldn't go into gear, and it was having issues with the mower deck. They told me that I would have a quote in 3 days after I paid $85 up front. 10 days later Harvey hit and I still didn't have a quote. I gave them a couple more weeks and then called to check on it. At first they said they couldn't find any record of it, then they gave me a quote that was only a couple of hundred dollars less than a new one. Most of this was engine parts, after I told them that the engine ran great. After a discussion, I got a reasonable quote for what I needed done. I picked it up and so far the repairs seem to be excellent. I am not surprised by the 1 star reviews, but I haven't yet found any lawnmower shop without some issues. read more

Horrible Customer Experience!!! Look for another Option for your lawnmower and small engine repair needs!!!

They've done good work on my self propelled mower in the past and some of the employees are nice. The others, well they don't seem very pleasant. A couple of gentlemen in there have seemingly permanent scowls on their faces and don't make you feel welcome at all. Not in the very least. The last time we took our mower there for repair they charged us $320 to resharpen the blade replace the cabling for the drive unit and a couple other things as well such as oil change and air filter. We thought this to be somewhat high. After the fourth use the lawn mower drive lever jammed but since we were past our 30 day warranty they refused to even look at it. It may have even been something simple. They have no problem charging you high dollar for their repairs however when it comes to common courtesy and going the extra mile they just don't seem willing or motivated at all. While they were resharpening the blade they didn't even bother to clean the bottom of the deck which was encrusted with 2 inches of very old compacted grass. It's details like that which bother me. I spent about 500 dollars at this place within the last month. I bought a chain saw and some other items. Well I decided to bring in my older chain saw there to be serviced. I brought it in Monday Nov. 3th 2014. I did not hear anything for 5 days so I called friday Nov 7th 2014. The man on the phone was very rude and refused to check and see what the progress was on my chain saw. I ask him why he could not go check and I said you are very rude. I am the customer. I said is this how you treat all your customers. He hung up on me. I did get pissed off so I called back and told him I wanted to just get my chain saw and I did in fact give him a few choice words. I went to pick up my chain saw and we got into a heated argument with I assume to be the owner. A short fat little over weight man. He pulled a gun on me and I yelled for my kids in the car to call the police. I said I dont have a gun are you crazy. Why are you pulling a gun on me. He told me to leave and I said Not until I get my chainsaw. How they stay in business I will never know. Very rude employees and owners. I would definitley avoid this place if I were you. read more

I stopped by A J's several days ago and spoke with Carl at the front desk. I asked him if they worked on Arien Zero Turn Mowers. He immediately told me they do and said to bring it in. 2 days after that, on 12/09/16 I show with my Ariens Mower, 3 gas blowers and 1 Echo Hedge Trimmer. I walk in and find Carl is there again so I tell him I am there to drop my equipment off for an estimate for repairs. This time Carl looks at the other 3 men working there and asks them if they work on Arien mowers or not? I'm like, dude, I was just in here the other day and you said you worked on them and now you don't know what you work on??? That should have been the first clue. So then they all decide; "yeah, we can work on it for you." But then Carl tells me that I'll have to pay $37.50 for each hand held equipment I have if I want an estimate. So I decide not to leave my 3 blowers but I do leave my hedge trimmer because the only thing wrong with it was it was leaking gas from the defective rubber seal that the fuel line passes thru into the gas tank. Simple fix, Right?? That is what I thought, so this morning Carl calls me and says he has my estimate for fixing my hedge trimmer. $212.00 to repair my hedge trimmer...I'm like, REALLY! That was more than what I paid for it when it was brand new. I couldn't understand. The woman that works there and claims to be the owner, said my hedge trimmer needed a new carburetor and starts listing all these items that it needed. I said, no way...my hedge trimmer was working and running perfectly and all I wanted was the leaky seal replaced. It was obvious at this point they were trying to RIP me off. Therefore I told I was coming to get my Hedge trimmer and my Lawnmower, which I was told no work had been done to my lawnmower and I told them not to touch my mower and that I'd be right there to get my equipment. I got there within the next 30 minutes. When I got there the guy at the desk told me the manager was in the back and then he left the counter and went to the back as well. After waiting a short time, I went outside and walked around to the shop. As I walked in I heard the woman telling the mechanic not to put anything back together because the customer, Me, wasn't going to pay for it. As I walked in, I noticed the mechanic had removed the front wheel on my zero turn mower. When I asked him to put it back on the woman ORDERED the mechanic not to put the wheel back on and said I would just have to drag it out of there. She then had the mechanic place my hedge trimmer which had been completely stripped down with all my parts in a bag put everything on the mower and told me to drag it out. At this time her other manger comes back there and tells me to "get the fuck out of his shop." The woman told him to let me get my equipment out. When I start to put the wheel back on myself, the manger pulls a gun out and points it right at my abdomen and again tells me to "get the fuck out of my shop or I'll shoot you!" I can tell you for sure these people are extremely Crooked. They don't care anything about being honest and doing the right thing. I am a police officer and have been for the last 25 years. The Harris County Sheriff's Office came to the scene to investigate after I called 911. The district attorney's office was contacted and the district attorney's office agreed to accept charges on the manager for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. I will be following up on this issue and will be filing a complaint with the BBB and the Texas Attorney General's Office for consumer protection. Two weeks after drop off I called for the status and they said tomorrow we'll start on it, I said I want an estimate before you do any work, lady says yes of course. Three days later I call and lady says its ready $138.65, I explain these are unauthorized repairs and she says sorry. I pick it up and further explain these are unauthorized repairs and they said ok they'll take the parts off and I'm thinking off the invoice. Wrong...they start taking parts off my mower while I'm waiting. I often wonder how people like this stay in business considering everyone must be a one-time customer. I would hope to at least get a jar of Vaseline and a kiss with this type service. read more

This place is HORRIBLE...HORRIBLE....HORRIBLE and a rip-off. I don't know how they stay in business. Read the other reviews. I didn't until I had 1st hand experience with this horrible business. I took my lawn mower in to get the starter control box replaced and have the blades sharpened. The guy said it would take 2 weeks. I received a call 2 weeks later saying it would cost $387.00 to have my lawn mower fixed because I needed a new crank shaft and a whole bunch of other stuff. I could buy a brand new one for $20.00 more. The lawn mower worked fine when I dropped it off. I only needed the control box replaced because it broke as I was finishing up my lawn that was it. When I picked up my mower the blade was off and parts placed in a bag. I asked why the blade was off and not put back on. The reply was "you didn't want us to fix it so we stopped working on it you don't expect us to work on something for free". I was amazed by this logic. My reply was you don't take your car in for service and they tell you have a cracked window you decline to have the window repaired by them so they stop working on your car and bag up the parts they do what was requested and return your car the same way you brought it in not inoperable with a bag of parts. The guy then had the nerve to say if you want the blade back on I can charge you another 1/2 hour labor to put it back on. read more
