No wonder this place was empty when I pulled up. Trash. My son ordered the southern sandwich combo which comes with a side & drink. I got him fries and a lemonade. The fries were flavorless but thick and fried nice. I ate one so I could review it. I wouldn't order it for myself. Hard pass. For myself, I ordered the flounder sandwich by itself. Skip this! It comes bare. I had to add lettuce & tomatoes and truthfully, wasn't even worth it. They fried the flounder but it was either not fried hard enough or was previously frozen as the inside was mushy. They only have me 1 tomato and the lettuce was laughable. $23 total for 1 combo + a sandwich. Not worth it. They charge an additional $4.00 if you pay with your card. read more

Been a long time customer of AJs (when Flowers Furniture and Harrisburg School were still around) and can count on only one hand the number of times I wasn't happy with their food/service. I like to support local businesses when I can, however, $34 for 3 sandwiches (2 southerns and 1 flounder) and 1 order of fries (no drinks) is a bit steep. Can't beat AJ's for local diner type food. They are fast for take out orders and the place is clean if you want to dine in. Staff is always friendly. Some of our favorite dishes: AJ Special burger combo, fried okra, my son always gets the spaghetti, onion rings with the spicy ranch are so good. Great salads. The only thing I would say I wouldn't get again is the fried fish and the pork chop with gravy. Wish they had weekend breakfast. read more

I'd like to give 2.5 stars but can't so being generous with 3. Quite over priced for quality of food we were given. Fries and onion rings had no seasoning whatsoever, just bland. Asked for L/T/O on the burger and tomato was left off. Club itself was pretty good despite being a bit soggy but that happens with togo. Wasn't told about the 1.75 upcharge for onion rings which again for flavorless rings seems excessive. Was also charged for 2 drinks when the burger is clearly listed as a "combo", does combo not mean a side and drink come with anymore? They also added a 4% service charge which I assume is because we paid with card but again would be nice if these things were communicated to the customer. Great locally owned place. Very good service and moderate ambiance. The main thing is, the food is really good.

I really and truly wanted to like this place. Especially since I love mom and pop shops because chain restaurants get so boring. But this place was just so underwhelming. I ordered bacon cheeseburger. Burger patty was so thin and didn't even fill up the big bun. Burger to bun ratio was way off. And then it wasn't even piping hot. Neither were my fries. Even though things are supposedly cooked to order, it was lukewarm. No flavor on the fries, not one piece of salt. And burger was tasteless too. The fries did come with a nice dipping sauce, but when fries are not hot, the sauce wasn't a saving grace. Even though food was very subpar, at least the staff was extremely friendly. But honestly, I don't see myself going back to pay for more lackluster food. read more

Should have listened to the adage, if the parking lot is empty, there is a reason. It was supper time so we stopped in. We were the only people there. Menu was confusing, had to ask many questions. The special board posted meals more expensive than if you ordered the items separately. When I got my meal the instant mashed potatoes were sour. Everything else other than the chicken strips were lukewarm war and in the dangerous temperature zone. I told the waitress they were bad and asked for beans instead. I was given a small bowl of bean pieces. I would never eat here again. Drove past the Harrisburg Family Restaurant and it was packed. There is a reason AJ's was not. To the owner of AJ's, serve fresh good food or go out of business. Everyone else, find somewhere better to eat. read more

Moved near this place over a year ago and finely stopped in to try it for lunch oneday. Food: typical grill food. A moderate size menu and good pricing I had the chicken tendere and fries basket. The breading was crisp and the chicken juices Building: it's an older building looks like it's been a while since any remodeling has been done esp on the inside. Ajs used to be such a yummy place to eat, there chicken tenders used to be great and hand breaded, there ranch used to be homemade, and there spaghetti sauce used to be sooo yummy and great. How many times have I passed by AJs. Let's just say too may times. I stopped for lunch with my granddaughter who was insistant that she have a hot dog. I looked up hot dogs in H'burg and AJs came up. As ypur walk in, you order at the counter and they bring your meal to the table-fast! I ordered a Greek Chicken pita and a hot dog with fries. The hot dog was grilled not boiled and the bun was steamed. The grandgirl loved it. As I said, I ordered the Greek chicken pita. It had chicken, diced lettuce diced, tomatoes, feta and tzaziki sauce. The chicken was tender with a hint of lemon and oregano...excellent! The pita was soft and steamed. Lot's of feta and sauce. So good that it rivals my college staple at Sluvlaki on Blacksburg VA. AJs is one of those places that is a local eat. You've probably driven by it many times while In Harrisburg and just not noticed it. AJ's is a family owned restaurant with very friendly wait staff and speedy service. They aren't open on the weekend. The restaurant is very clean but not fancy. Theres enough parking all the way around the building, which can accommodate large work trucks too. For lunch you order at the counter and they bring the food to your table. Food is served in food baskets with a liner or on disposable plates (depending on what you order.) Even if they are busy, food typically comes out within a couple of minutes. They serve sandwiches, seafood, BBQ ( a little of something for everyone!) Every food plate that comes out looks more appetizing than the next. My hands down favorite meal here is the spaghetti, served with a side salad - choice of dressing, slice of toast and a container of parmesan cheese for your spaghetti on the side. One of the things that I like about their spaghetti is that it tastes home made. Very filling and large portions that you probably wont be able to finish! If I'm in Harrisburg around lunchtime, you can bet that I'm definitely eating here! read more

Have been eating at AJ's for over 20 years. I cannot think of Harrisburg and not equate AJ's in the same thought. It was a go-to for all the years I brought my children up and I live over 45 minutes from there now but still make a trip as often as possible. My favorite dish is the Spaghetti. It is hands down the best I've ever had anywhere or even make at home. I wish you had more locations :) The service is always top-notch. Throughout my travels in North Carolina, I have experienced many restaurants with a variety of menus. My favorite has always been the "American Diner" with basic home cooked meals. AJ's is one of these places you have to try. Ambiance is VERY basic. Plastic utensils wrapped in a napkin, high school waitresses working the counter, and daily specials. I had the pork tips in gravy/onions/peppers on rice with two sides. Excellent flavor pork not over cooked. We also had a chicken sandwich special with provolone. The daughter of the owner was our waitress and very attentive. Food was delivered hot to our booth and our drinks were never empty. All the place needed was a juke box and pictures on the wall. AJ's usually always has a few specials on the menu. Indoor dining only, and not a huge place by any means; though I haven't ever seen it packed out the door. Located along Highway 49 in Harrisburg, it can be easy to miss along a row of other restaurants and businesses. The pricing is reasonable for the portion sizes, ranging from around $6-10 for lunch. I last went to AJ's with a group and found no complaints among friends from the variety of different dishes to include: chicken salad's, chicken tips and Mac n cheese, and the double pita burger I decided on. Food was okay but something I didn't like was being charged $1 extra on each entree that had onion rings when the entrees said they came with two sides. The girl taking our order didn't tell us there was an extra charge for the onion rings, but I'm wondering why the charge in the first place when the onion rings were a normal side...and again, both plates came with two sides. ?? Also, something else we weren't told was having to pay a fee to use a debit/credit card. We chose to go to this restaurant due to the good reviews and seemingly reasonable prices on the menu we read online, but I just don't like the extra charges on sides that appear to be included with the meal and not being told beforehand about it as well as the charge we would have due to using a debit card. They need to be forthcoming with these things before paying. I shouldn't have to see it after the fact by looking at the receipt. We let it go, just not sure if we will be going back since we can eat many other places for that amount of money. The whole point of going there was trying to save some money. read more

The only problem I have is that not only do they not have an online menu, they don't have take home menus either. Which I've never experienced before. This is one of the best resturants in Harrisburg. The chicken tips over rice are great as is the green beans and mac and cheese. The burgers are the best in town as is the greek pita. The only drawback for some (not me) is that they serve on disposable plates. The service is fast, food good and the staff is friendly. They are not open on weekends though. read more

My wife grew up in Harrisburg, is fond of AJs. I got the Carolina style (chili,slaw,mustard,onions) cheeseburger, fries, and onion rings. I really liked the burger! I got it to go, and I figured that they do this because people ask for no salt often but the fries and onion rings weren't salted which through me off. However, added some salt and it was way better than my initial taste. I would just get the fries in the future because I think that salt should really be added to the onion ring batter. I really liked the friendly atmosphere must be infectious because even customers were friendly to me. I have been out of NC, and the Charlotte metro for a while and man I miss home. People are just so much friendlier. I'll be back the next time I visit my in-laws! read more
