Chucks has the absolutely most reasonable pricing for breakfast that I have seen in Charlotte. I got the breakfast special that had two eggs, grits, biscuit, and sausage and it was only 7.75! A literal steal. The quality of the food was fresh, hot, and delicious. I devoured it sooo fast. When you walk in you get a very warm greeting from the staff and they take your order quickly. There isn't a lot of seating inside so it's best to come with a small group if looking to dine in. There is ample parking on site. This is a true local IYKYK spot. Definitely will be back.

When you think of that local, family-owned gem that always hits the spot (without breaking the bank), you're thinking of Chuck's. A staple in the North Charlotte community, Chuck's offers great food and top-notch service, all at a more than reasonable price. The restaurant is small, but this only adds to its cozy, home-cooked, family atmosphere. If you plan to dine in, be mindful that seating is limited, especially on Fridays and weekends, but they're always happy to take to-go orders over the phone. The food is made fresh to order, so while there may be a slight wait, it's minimal for a hot, freshly prepared meal. With plenty of options for both breakfast and lunch, you'll find all the classic dishes. My go-to is one of the breakfast combos, and I usually add hash browns or salmon cakes to make sure I'm completely satisfied. At the same price (or lower) than nearby fast food spots, I highly encourage anyone on the fence to take a chance and try this local find.

I just happened to come across this spot randomly, and I'm glad I did. If you want a good and simple southern breakfast, this is the spot for you. I got grits, eggs, liver mush, hashbrowns and a biscuit. The food is made fresh to order, so it comes out hot. I think the biscuit was the best part of the meal, though. It was soft and fluffy and delicious! The hashbrowns didn't have any seasoning on them, so I likely wouldn't revisit this dish, but with a little ketchup they were still good. The restaurant is super small, so you may end up having to take it to go, or having to eat with a stranger. Either way, you're gonna enjoy it. The service is super friendly and they try to get your food out to you fast. They have a lunch menu, and what looks like many different specials throughout the week, so I would definitely recommend giving this one a try!

Prices were VERY reasonable. Food and service were great. Country ham was a special treat.

Review for Waffle House After relocating to Charlotte--and…read morethe Southeast more broadly--from the San Francisco Bay Area, I've made it a point as a local foodie and someone mindful of supporting community businesses to explore regional institutions I may not have experienced before. One of those places was Waffle House, a name I had heard about but never visited until now. A colleague from Atlanta had talked about it often--especially the hash browns--and described the experience as something of a rite of passage in the South. Naturally, my curiosity got the best of me. I finally visited one location, and I have to say, I was genuinely impressed. I ordered steak and eggs with crispy hash browns and pancakes, and everything arrived exactly as requested. The steak was cooked medium rare, the eggs were perfectly done over medium, and the hash browns were beautifully crisp. The food was simple, satisfying, and well executed--classic comfort food done right. What really stood out, though, was the experience at the counter. Sitting there and watching the cook prepare meals in such a compact space for a restaurant that seats dozens of people felt like live theater. The kitchen is completely visible, and the level of coordination, timing, and organization was impressive. It honestly felt like watching a well-rehearsed symphony. The staff worked efficiently, kept everything clean and orderly, and handled the flow of orders with professionalism. I was also pleasantly surprised to learn that the food is prepared fresh--real eggs, cooked to order--and not from frozen or powdered shortcuts. That attention to basics goes a long way. Other highlights: * Friendly, attentive staff * Easy parking and convenient access * Great value for the quality and portion size * A uniquely open kitchen experience you rarely get to see I left a generous tip because the service and execution deserved it, and I walked away with a completely new appreciation for this iconic Southern institution. My earlier assumptions about Waffle House were definitely corrected. I imagine weekends can get busy, so I personally prefer visiting during quieter, off-peak hours when you can enjoy the meal and observe the rhythm of the kitchen without the rush. Bottom line: If you're new to the South or simply curious, visiting a Waffle House really is a rite of passage. Be open-minded, sit at the counter, watch the magic happen, and enjoy a solid, satisfying meal. You just might be pleasantly surprised--like I was.

There were four of us, I got the Cheesesteak Bowl and a side waffle. The waffle itself was hit or miss, mien was kinda falling apart but was still good. My friends waffle was together. The cheesesteak bowl was nice, the onions were good, the meat to hash browns ratio was like 1:3, there could be more cheese added to it. First time eating at a Waffle House, and it was pretty good, solid breakfast option

I think I ordered the elevated egg sandwich, and remember it being good, the egg being well prepared. I did feel the prices were a little high. We decided to wait it out, but we ended up waiting longer than 40mins. I know that the employees can't control when customers get done with their food, but for a good 15 minutes about 5 tables sat vacant while dirty, as they could have cleaned those tables and got the waiting parties seated. Me and my grandmother both love the lemon ricotta pancakes. No matter what day or time it is, they always hit the spot. You can tell that they are made from scratch, as they are not rubbery. The thought of ricotta in a pancake can turn some people away, but all it really does is adds delicacy (makes the pancake tender (if that makes sense)). They usually have soft scrambled eggs, but today they were a bit more of a hard scramble and had trouble cutting a bite with a fork. The bacon this time was so hard that it wouldn't really bend like normal bacon would. I would have rather waited a couple more minutes for some better bacon. They do have a drink called the "Pineapple Express" that is always good. I can't really describe the flavor, but I recommend you try it. You'll have to taste for yourself! As a summary, this First Watch is usually great, but this time it was a miss. I wish that they would be more consistent with the quality of the food AND the service, as some servers act like they don't want to be there while others are great.

This chain feels like it's close to the end, after years of steady decline…read more I've been frequenting this location for a while, I think at least 10 years. They started out with a decent menu of American pub food, and we would regularly eat there, often bringing family for an easy meal. We even booked a Christmas party for a group here. They stocked *some* local beers (mostly via inBev, not true local distributors) and had changing tables for the family in the restrooms (a pet peeve of mine - they actually installed them after we questioned it years ago.) But there's been a steady decline, especially in the last few years. The menu has gotten smaller, year after year. Favorites and sides disappear, all because they "take too long" - like baked potatoes. Then the burgers became "smash burgers" instead of a nice 1/2 lb patty. On the most recent trip, the "two 4oz smash patties" were just regular patties. The Diablo burger disappeared. And the menu was cut again. The new CEO in 2023 was responsible for a lot of this. I'm sure their "test kitchen" was more about speed, cost, and customer throughput than actual taste and quality. Then the chain was sold to a Florida company in 2025. So the Carolina based chain was cut further. Sure, they may have increased the salary for managers, but the quality and menu have been cut. Favorites are gone, or portions cut, or substitutions made with cheaper options. We've seen this happen with other local chains (Fox and the Hound) and sadly, it feels like Hickory Tavern is on its way out. On our recent visit, the crowd was sparse for a "Monday night football" evening. Usually it's standing room only at the bar, but the restaurant was at 10% capacity or less. I was surprised to see the cuts to the menu - I hadn't noticed the "smash burger" substitution, as I hadn't ordered burgers the last few times. But the "smash burger" my wife received was two plain patties, maybe the cook pressed hard on the flattop, but that's not a smash burger. I ordered the honey hot chicken sandwich. What should have been a chicken breast, was 2-1/2 tenders in a bun. Similar taste, but presentation matters, and the tenders kept falling out of the bun. Portions seemed smaller, buns were smaller, and the whole visit was disappointing. If someone went here for the first time, they'd probably think it was "okay", but not great. But knowing what this chain was like 10 years ago makes it worse. My prediction - management will go one of two ways - either fix the menu and bring back quality options, or they'll continue to cut until the restaurant suffers the same fate as similar chains that have gone under, like the Fox and the Hound. But unless they acknowledge the decline and choose the former option, this will most likely be our last visit to Hickory Tavern.
