Was in the Cupertino area and decided to give this play a try. I'm really glad we decided to stop by. We came on a Sunday night and we were the first ones in line when it opened at 6 so we had no problems with wait times but it did get packed and there was a line so maybe making a reservation would be a good idea. The staff were pretty friendly and they even gave hot towels to clean your hands with before eating. To start off, the skewer order form is already on the table and you could order off of that. There is a special's board but we just ordered from the menu. I tried the salted wings, sauce wings (that's what it says on the menu) , cartilage, scallops, beef tongue, and black pork sausage skewers. I loved the sauce wings (I'm assuming it's teriyaki sauce) and the salted ones were ok but since i ate the sauced ones first they kind of tasted bland by comparison. Cartilage is nothing special, I just like eating it when I am at a teriyaki place. The black pork sausage was pretty amazing. I loved it and will highly recommend it. Scallops were good but again nothing too special but still good. The pork belly was a little overdone so it was dry and the garlic on top was just a bit too much for me. I tried beef tongue for the first time...and I have to say, I'm not a big fan of the texture but the boyfriend loved it. We also tried the fried calamari and it was delicioussssss.... the yaki onigiri was really good and I loved the chicken inside it. Though if between two people...one may be enough to share. Their dessert choices were pretty good, The Matcha parfait was delicious but be careful because it has frosted flakes as a base, it can be really filling and a little hard to finish after a meal. The Matcha Tiramisu was pretty good but after the parfait may be a little bland. Overall, i loved this place and will definitely be back again. I came here with my friend on a Wednesday night, so it wasn't too crowded. There was no wait to be seated. Once we were seated, a waiter came and handed us hot towels for our hands while we looked through the menu. We ordered the salmon avocado tartar, a salmon rice ball, the unagi rice, and Saba sashimi. Everything was delicious. The salmon avocado tartar is something I definitely recommend along with the Unagi rice. The salmon avocado tartar came with home made potato chips and sat in a bed of I think ponzu sauce. The unagi was cooked to perfection and the rice was very flavorful. You know it's a good sign when 90% of the customers are Japanese. Very quaint and cozy. The waiting area is very awkward because it gets so crowded after the two seats are taken. It's difficult for people to walk through when there are even two people in the waiting area. There were three four tops open and three different parties waiting in the area so service was a little behind. I think this could have been avoided considering that we all had reservations. Hot towels are a nice touch. 1. Beef tongue - soft, perfectly seasoned it's not what I expected tongue to taste like. Texturally it's like thinly sliced beef. 2. Japanese omelette - slightly sweet, light, reminds me of soufflé because of the consistency. 3. Salmon and avocado tartare - flavor explosion! A must order. Chips are thinly sliced and pair perfectly with the tartare sauce. 4. Tail (skewer) - chicken tail. Not bad considering I have never had tail before. It's just a little fat and cartilage 5. My boyfriend and I came here 5 mins before opening on a Sunday afternoon and was greeted by many of the friendly workers there. Once they seated us, they gave us menus and warm towels to clean our hands with, which is a Japanese tradition. We ended up ordering a number of different items including the salmon and avocado tartare, unagi meshi, fried calamari and a few chicken heart/ skin skewers. All of the dishes that came out were really yummy; however, be mindful that the skewers may take longer than the dishes. Making a reservation is recommended since it is usually crowded when I visit. This Japanese izakaya is probably the best in the bay area compared to other izakayas I've been to. The service is fast. Great hidden Japanese restaurant in Cupertino. I came here for dinner after my friend suggested it. I didn't even know this place existed. I love that they do small plates of food which is great for sharing family style. I was also pleasantly surprised to find out they do HH Tuesday-Thursday form 6-7:30. This includes 5 food items and $4.50 Sapporo. We had the fried mochi, chicken hearts, risotto, salmon avocado tartare, salmon onigri, and the unagi Don. All were really good. Some highlights that stood out was the salmon avocado tartare. It was really flavorful with a great sauce beneath and layers of salmon and avocado. The house made potato chips were tasty too! We ordered the risotto after I saw it being made in a cheese wheel at the table next to us. I went here with my boyfriend after work to avoid the traffic going home. We ordered the yakitori set and extra on the side. We love the gizzard, tails, and SKIN! Also we ordered Japanese sausage and the black pork sausage. I'm not a fan because they tasted like Costco hot links. We also get the monk fish pate. It was fresh and yummy. Let me start off by saying the service here is really friendly and prompt! Kudos to our waiter. Now onto the food. They don't have a lot of skewer options on their menu. Derp. The way it works is that they have a giant dish with grated ginger in the middle and they set down the skewers after telling you what they are. Such a fun dining experience!! It took me a while to check this place out, but once I finally did I was sad I waited so long. The restaurant is a little unassuming from the outside but the food is spectacular and the service is great. I like that this restaurant offers slightly less common Japanese food (basically, it's not sushi) and has really delicious yakitori options. My favorite? The chicken cartilage but that is because I have a weird affinity to cartilage. If you are like me, order this, it's delicious. If you aren't, oh well, skip! I love my Japanese food, and it's hard to find a great grilled skewer place in this area. Ajito is one of the 2 places I know of here in the South Bay Area where you can find Japanese skewer items. We came here as a group of 6 with a reservation called in just a few days before the Friday when we dined. They were welcoming although not everyone in our party was on time and sat us with hot towels to wipe down our hands. The food was delicious. As for skewers, we ordered: hearts, chicken skin, spicy meatball, and spicy chicken wings. The hearts and chicken skin were my favorite. On the other hand, the spicy meatball is fire! It had a real kick to it. The spicy chicken wings weren't as bad. The non-skewer items we ordered were: takowasa (octopus w/ wasabi), sashimi salad, deep fried chicken cartilage, sausages, beef tongue, and grilled whole squid. Deep fried chicken cartilage is one of our favorite dishes anywhere it is served so we had to get it. The sausages were what I believe to be Berkshire sausages which are always delicious. They were served with ketchup and dijon. The sashimi salad, served with their house dressing, had enough sashimi and salad to divide between 3 people. The grilled squid was cooked just right with mayo to dip in. The beef tongue was thick and really chewy. It was one of my favorite dishes here. We also ordered steamed rice and met our expectations of Japanese white rice. Several of us ordered hot tea while others ordered water. The waiters/waitresses refilled them quite speedily. I came here yesterday for lunch with my epicurean sister and cousin. Ajito is good for me because I don't eat pork or sashimi, and their specialty is chicken anyway. So I started to yelp again three weeks ago after a year abroad in Japan, and I think Ajito is better than 90% of what I had there. The servers can speak both English and Japanese. We had a great time at Ajito because the food was excellent and the service was gracious. I ordered the Mackerel set meal while my sister had the Lunch Special du jour, which was a chicken katsu with an eggplant curry. The chicken katsu was succulent, and nicely fried. My cousin got the best though. She Tori Karaage I think, and it was phenomenal. The skin was crispy, and the meet inside was marinated. I have not had better karaage anywhere else! My mackerel was also so good, I almost ate the skin. All the set meals during lunch comes with miso soup, rice, and salad. The soup is translucent like water when the bowl is still, but becomes opaque when you mix it, like it should be! The rice, even though it's just white rice, was no ordinary grain. It had moisture and was pleasing on the palate. And then the salad was also good. Our server was attentive and always gave us more green tea when we ran out. I would definitely come again, but for lunch only, which is between 11:30 am and 1:30 pm. My cousin commented on the painting of blimps on the wall, and how she wanted it. Beef tongue - 5 stars - very good and juicy Chicken thigh - 3 stars - good, but again no charcoal flavor Crispy chicken skin w/ ponzu special appetizer - 3 stars - fried skin Takowasa - 4.5 stars - first time having this, was awesome. Okra skewers - 2 stars - okra was very slimy, maybe suppose to be like that? Shishito peppers, sauced - 3 stars - lacked any sauce flavor Mochi balls - 4.5 stars - served in tsuyu soup base, tasty Sake sashimi - 4 stars - very fresh, good sized slices. We also ordered a large hot sake of which had a super long name that I couldn't pronounce. It was $20 for a large, but the large is really small like around 300ml. To give our server credit, she was able to pronounce the 14 character name of our sake with ease. We received excellent service here, and overall it was a good experience. I've been eating at Ajito for seven years. It is my favorite Japanese restaurant in Silicon Valley and is one of my favorite Japanese restaurants this side of the Pacific. Ajito specializes in chicken-based dishes; however, it does have a selection of non-chicken dishes such as sashimi and various different types of donburi (rice bowls). Everything here is authentic, and the service is great! During the COVID pandemic the restaurant has been selling delicious bento, which is what I now normally get from Ajito. Inside, it's pretty straight forward in terms of decor. Not all fancy with wood panels like Gocchi and such but functional nonetheless. The menu here is mostly starters and appetizers plus a selection of noodle and rice dishes. This is food for drinking but not exactly izakaya. Grilled cod with miso (on their specials board) - Umami taste of sweet, salty all in one. Cod is nice and tender with slight smokiness from the grilling. Best of the night. Daikon mochi agadashi - little fat discs of delight. Crisp on the outside from deep frying with daikon and mild chewiness of mochi inside. Dipped in soy sauce for saltiness. Ground pork stir fried with lotus root and served with lettuce. Mediocre dish. Don't kill me if I say the version at PF Chang's is better. Yes, sad but true. Cheese risotto - This is unique in that the risotto is mixed in a huge block of cheese in front of you then served. Bits of bacon and lots of cheesiness. Taste like a carbonara but with rice. Still, second best dish of the night. Service was generally prompt but you have to flag down the wait staff as they mostly fly by. Lots of Japanese people in there so that's your measure of goodness. Chicken skin with sauce was my favorite! No extra salt needed on that one. The spicy chicken meatball really packs a punch in that sauce. It was kind of a kick at first bite... then it spread like fire in your mouth. If you like spicy, I'm sure you'd enjoy it! The chicken breast skewers come with a sauce on the side and a dab of a pepper paste of some sort. I wish they gave more than just a dot of it! Also some of these skewers came out nice and hot, some came out lukewarm. Hot Pot of Eel: This was yummy. Very warm and fresh tasting. The eel was tender and the rice had crispy bits. Good eel to rice ratio~ The egg was poached well and oozed nicely when popped. I kind of wished the rice was seasoned or salted, but that's just me. Boyfriend liked it the way it was. Chicken Karaage: the portion is not huge or small. Good amount for two people to share, enough for a bite or two for 3-4 people. Came with a mayo sauce, lemon wedge, and some broccoli. I like to sprinkle that spicy ramen seasoning on my karaage. Garlic Fries: the portion here was more than I expected. It's definitely more than a Mc D's large order of fries. Came with a little cup of ketchup. I like to mix my ketchup with a lot of pepper, which they conveniently had tableside. Service was nice and prompt over all. They provide you with a warm towel to wipe your hands after you are seated. Food comes out relatively quick for yakitori, or maybe since we came when it just opened, food was barely starting to roll out. The dining area smells smoky, but wasn't as physically smoky as some other japanese yakitori places I've been to which was nice. We left feeling full and content. We got the kaisen bento to-go. Although I was hesitant to buy it at $30, I think it was a bargain after eating it. It was the best meal I have eaten during the pandemic! The sushi was awesome: sweet shrimp was huge (fried head included), uni was great, roe was wonderful (trout roe instead of salmon roe, I believe), a couple kinds of crab, etc. There were also three salads that were great. A spinach and tomato salad was the best. My daughter thought the tomatoes were the best she has ever tasted (definitely not the usual cardboard taste). Now I've eaten here before about 5 years ago when they were fresh on the scene and not too busy. And the second time I attempted to go was without a reservation but we were turned away on a weekday night due to how busy they became. Back to the present, it was busy but not 100 percent full. At times, I feel like they were short staffed due to needing to flag someone down to place our initial order or find someone to refill our tea/water. Catching the last 15 minutes of happy hour, we ordered the agedashi mochi and the fried chicken hearts which were pretty large sharable plates to our surprise. It definitely made the rest of the skewer orders I placed seem like I went overboard. My favorite options in no specific order included: thigh, sliced beef tongue, liver, and shitake mushroom. These tended to be either the most juicy or most flavorful of the options we tried. I would lean towards the sauce option over the salt option but both are good. Thought the reviews were pretty good so we decided to give it a try....however, we had wanted to try their Yakitori (skewers), but these are only served at dinner time. This is a pretty small, very basic restaurant with very minimal decorations......then again, when the food is good you really don't need any fancy decors as a distraction....at least this is my experience anyway. To get straight onto the food.....a nice and very polite young server came and took our order......the menu is not huge, but there's a good variety of yummy looking dishes to choose from....either from the lunch menu or on the board with a dozen or so daily specials. As appetizers we ordered the Chicken Karaage and the Fried Pumpkin Balls (croquettes, as the server called them). For mains, I ordered the Curry Fried Chicken Katsu over rice, which comes with a miso soup and a small dish of pickled vegetables. My brother ordered the Sashimi Salad and my father ordered the Grilled Eel over rice. I must say that everything was perfectly cooked and very yummy!.......in fact, my father is big fan of grilled eel and he will have something to say about it whether it's good or terrible.....when asked how his grilled eel over rice was, he replied that this was the best he had ever eaten!!!.....and he made it a point to compliment the server too.....which the server was very happy and excited about. The yakitori isn't as seasoned or as salty as other places nearby (sumiya, gaku). The chicken breast one was kind of bland. The ramen noodles were a perfect consistency; not too starchy and just a tad bit chewy. The broth wasn't too salty and had great flavor. I could really taste the green onions as well. The chicken karaage was tasty as well. The chicken was nice and crispy, but I would say that it could have been a little more lightly battered. Worst customer service experience..I ordered something that I cannot eat because it tasted so nasty and gnarly and the lady said everybody orders it and they know how it tastes like. Instead of apologizing she argued with me. Me and my coworkers are not going to order here ever. Do not put gnarly tasting food on ur lunch menu.if u encounter a customer complain,apologize and make them happy.you will not run out of customers if u please clients you will lose business if you think you have the best menu and have the right to lecture. The salmon avocado tartare with housemade chips is really good here. I highly recommend getting that. Other than that the skewers werent memorable at all, and the chicken wings were so dry and overcooked. The risotto is tossed in a cheese block before being served which was cool to watch but the dish ended up tasting way too much like parmesan. The unagi rice bowl is raved about here but I thought it was just ok. I got the fresh grapefruit soju too and the soju was so watered down. The grapefruit was old and dry too so barely any juice came out of it. Pass on that. read more

Good izakaya! Everything was good. We ordered mostly yakitori items. Salt flavor on: Gizzard, hearts, beef tongue, chicken wings, thighs. Sauce flavor on shitake mushroom. Recommend order a daikon salad and a pickled veggie plate to eat with your yakitori, they go well together! Would love to try their chicken dumpling hotpot next time, you need to reserve it ahead of time. However, the food came out pretty slow, if you are in a hurry then don't consider this place.
