I know Ajax Downs Racetrack from two different angles. Over a decade ago, I worked in the gaming industry. I wrote brief profiles about our clients. Ajax Downs was one of them. The other source was my manager. He had heard about the lobster tails dinner with prime rib at a cheap price, and wanted us to take advantage of it. I knew that a dinner deal like that (I think it was $14.99 at the time, but have no clue whether this deal is still on) would be popular. Waiting in line for a while for such a deal turned me off. I'd be hangry and no one needs to put up with that. A few weeks ago, Ajax held a walk-in ribfest at Ajax Downs. I had never been to this one. Frankly, the last time I had set foot at a ribfest was in 2018. I decided to give it a try. I did manage to see the racetrack while I was circling to find a parking spot. I wish that I had taken a photo, but it's etched in my mind. It's closer to the casino. You truly can't miss it, even when you're preoccupied with parking! It's a dirt track. It had greenery. It looked nicely maintained. There are live races from May till October each year. Most races happen on Wednesdays. Each month, there's a race day on Sunday, but I don't get how the powers that be decide with Sunday of each month will be a race day. It's best to check the schedule before you head over here to take in some races and perhaps strike it rich. I was there on a Saturday afternoon, so the racetrack was quiet. The ribfest was not. It was nice seeing it so lively. Vendors were dishing out free samples of popcorn and such. There were many food trucks, from Caribbean good eats, to lemonade. I did find a parking spot fairly close to the ribfest's entrance. I lucked out in the E lot. Parking was free. There was also parking across the street where it was more on grass. I got half a rack of ribs and coleslaw from The Hogfather. Ajax Downs is so vast that it supported six ribbers, and included a huge area for hungry eaters to sit and chow down. Ajax isn't horrible to get to. From Markham, the commute is fine, with a few options. Highway 401 gets you here fairly fast, depending on the time of day. If you like a more scenic and relaxed drive, there's Taunton or Kingston Road. Ajax Down is ideal for an outdoors event like the Ajax Ribfest. I had a good time. The Beaches used to have Greenwood Racetrack eons ago. It was nice seeing a racetrack again. Next time, I'd love to check out the Downs itself when I'm not grabbing takeout for dinner. Thursday, you line up for your Winner's Circle card The machines are relatively new. There are 2 cents, 25 cents, $1 machines. It gets quite busy when I arrived around 6:00pm. If you are a first time registrant at the Winners circle, they give you $5 to play. Every hour, there is a big lucky draw. There are a lot of people who use card to hold the spots or ones that as we are lining up, they play two machines. The aisle between the machines are very narrow, so as you wait for the machines. People are always like "excuse me" They will text you once table is ready. Usually it's an hour wait, so you will end up spending some money in the slots. On Mondays, from 4pm-11:00pm, all you can eat ribs (winners circle reward for $14.99) if you don't have your winners circle reward card, the original price is at $19.99. For Thursday, prime rib and 2 lobster tails. For winners circle is $14.99 and non members regular price at $19.99. If you forget your physical card, you just have to wait in a super long line up at the Winners Circhle to get the card again. For the meal, you will have to wait after checking in at the restaurant, usually for an hour. During that hour you can play slots and free self served pop, coffee. The meal was worth the wait. Three courses for $14.99 with the member winners circle card. You get a salad, your own choice of dressing, such as ranch, Italian, balsamic etc. Then the main, two lobster tail and the prime rib. For dessert a carrot cake. Well worth the price and tasted pretty good. Service was a little slow due to the special. But overall nicely done! read more

Solely for the Winner's Circle Rewards member Thursday and Friday night special (4pm-11pm), the 2 lobster tails + prime rib for $14.99 deal deserves 4 stars. Despite the ridiculously LONG wait times to get a seat, sometimes taking 45min-2hours (intentional marketing scheme to get you to spend money at the casino while you wait), the food quality, quantity, and value is amazing for the price. The entree also comes with a salad to start, mashed potatoes and green beans as a side, and carrot cake for dessert. If you have the time to kill and some spare cash to spend at the casino, then this is a great meal to take advantage of! read more

Casino is well-maintained and clean with complimentary coat check. ID checking is more thorough than others. I have been to this casino twice and both times I was asked two questions and request to remove glasses. There are multiple slot machines, and more importantly to the budget conscious gambler, they have six 25 cents per hand blackjack/poker/daily keno machines (a rarity now a days, with most casinos upgrading to $5 per hand dealt by buxomous ladies on a big screen TV.) They also have a self-serve drinks station offering a variety of fountain pop, Folgers coffee, sweet tea. Every so often, you will also see a lady pushing a trolley of chips and chocolates along with drinks. The restaurant is outside the casino area, which makes this one of the few kid friendly casino restaurants! Best seats are right by the window, watching those horses while you eat. Depending on the size of your party, food can take a while to arrive. Today, a relatively quiet Christmas Day, it took 18 mins for the food to arrive from the time we gave our order to the waiter. We ordered: the Traditional Turkey dinner (14.99), Canadian Breakfast (8.99), Liver & Onion (12.99 1pc liver). With your winner's circle card, you can get a 15% discount. For those who doesn't mind liver, this dish is a winner. It is sliced thinly, not too chewy, and caramelized onions covers any strong distinct taste. Moreover, how often do you see restaurants serving liver? Turkey dinner, on the other hand, is a holiday special that you can pass on. You get a massive scoop of mashed potato, stuffing, few (very dry) slices of turkey, and some greens. The Canadian Breakfast is very difficult to mess up, so that is also a good cheap option as well. A positive for the breakfast includes getting your two eggs done in two different ways (some restaurants are effort-conscious and disallow that). In the summer months, there's also horse racing. In comparison to Woodbine racetrack, you can get much closer and better view of the horses here, not to mention less crowds. They also tend to have hot dog/concession stand outside so you can grab a small bite as you watch the horses sprint. read more

Ajax Downs is an "Entertainment" complex that includes Live Quarter Horse racing, Simulcast, Slots and restaurant. Nice and modern building with excellent facilities!! Dare I said they have the nicest public washrooms in the Ajax area? Over 800 slot machines starting from 1 cent.. not surprising to see a lot of seniors having their entertainment here on a weekday afternoon. Simulcast area let horse racing lover able to place a bet of their favourite off site.. and every Tuesday and Sunday you able to experience live horse racing on the racetrack. There is also Restaurant on site if you can tear yourself from all these excitement. But if you are just into a beverage, the slot area does have self served beverage area with tea, coffee and fountain drinks! Just remember it suppose to be fun... and the House always win! The racing is great, but the service at the trackside refreshment stand is as poor as I've ever seen. It took 37 min standing in line in the hot sun for them to serve 18 people. We then decided to try upstairs and it took them 15 min to serve the 10 people standing in line to get a drink to take outside. I blame OLG for this poor service. read more

Come here quite often. The restaurant is very clean. The service though all depends on who you get. The last couple of times the waiter and waitress that we've had seem like they'd rather be anywhere but here. Breakfast is decent for the price. We are here now and have been waiting for a half hour - it took 15 minutes for anyone to approach us. 25 people at another table and their waitress is serving them quicker than our waiter and there were only two other tables when we arrived. read more

This casino was way better than I thought it would be. We went on a Friday just before noon, so it wasn't all that busy. I have heard that one of the problems is this place sometimes gets packed meaning limited machines open to play. The place itself was clean and despite the regular cheesy decor of every casino I have so far experienced, it was still inviting. I also liked the water view from the restaurant. Overall, I enjoyed my experience even though I promptly lost my $20 gambling limit. I would go again! read more
