Yes, life sometimes gets busy and you forget to do some things. Actually, I didn't forget, but I thought Gatwick was close enough to our hotel that we could take the tube or just Uber over there or something. Well, from our hotel, it was actually a 1 hour and 20 minute ride. Oopsie. Once I found out, I quickly turned to Yelp. Not too many shuttle services I found, but 1 of them had 5 reviews and 5 stars. Let's give it a shot. I booked it online thru my phone and got a quick confirmation. I was all set. I have to admit, I was a little nervous because one email said they didn't charge me yet. I guess that's good, but I thought they might back out since it was only 1 day notice (if it's 12 hours or less, you need to make sure you contact them). Alpay called me a few minutes before his scheduled arrival. Unfortunately, there was no place where he could stop in front of our hotel, because it's a bus lane. Luckily, a little bit further down, there was a small driveway that he stopped for a minute or two. He picked us up and 80 minutes later, we were at Gatwick! The car seemed almost brand new (and it was a Mercedes Benz!). The ride was smooth. So smooth that the rest of the family had a nice little nap. I think he saw that they were asleep, so he kept the small talk to a minimum. A very friendly guy, though. The cost to get to the airport was about 70 GBP, which is about $92. Not bad considering the distance.

(Being German, I'm way early anyway, so I can comfortable squeeze in that extra 15 minutes.) Both Heathrow Express and Heathrow Connect leave from Paddington Station. Yet while the former is very easy to find, the latter is less obviously advertised throughout the station. Let me tell you where to find it: Platform 12! Make sure you get the tickets before heading to the platform though - you can buy them from the normal National Rail ticket machines. Life in the fast lane - not always my preferred choice!

There's the Heathrow Express, which is advertised at the airport and station a lot more clearly than its sister the Connect. The Express goes directly from the airport to Paddington and takes roughly 15 minutes, whereas Connect stops at multiple stations, picking up people/dropping them off along the way. Follow the signs for the Express, and you'll be just about where you need to be for the Connect. The trains are clean and you're not dealing with the general crowds of the London tube, so it's a relief when you're carrying luggage and just want to sit back and relax a bit after/before a flight and during the commute. I decided to give both a try to see how they compare with each other, and I'm glad I did. The Heathrow Express is even nicer, but that's also reflected in the price tag of 22 pounds; the Connect is about half that price, but also takes about twice as long. Either way though, you'll have to drag and carry your luggage around a bit to get to the platforms, but it's not as extensive as taking the tube and carrying them around flights of stairs. If you're traveling solo, both the Express and Connect are the better financial options over hailing a cab to central London. However, if you're in a group, hailing a cab and dividing the fair could still be the most convenient and worth it.

But the price was so good, and I have a friend who has been travelling with them for 15 years and he wouldnt use anyone else, so I thought I'd give them a try. Boy am I glad I did! The car turned up 5 minutes before the booked time of 5 am, a very nice and comfortable people carrier, spotlessly clean. The driver was smartly dressed with a collar and tie, he drove very safely and smoothly, knew the best route, and helped me with my bags at Heathrow. I couldnt fault the experience, I really got 5 star treatment and all for a price of £35 door to door! Unbelievable! I had been paying 75 with Addison Lee for years - for an inferior service! Never again. I have been using Airport Direct now for about 6 weeks, on average 2 or 3 times a week for trips all around London and every trip has been just as good. Their prices seem to be about half the black cab rate. Last week I got their app on my phone too - now I dont even have to call them. They say the app makes me a priority customer, but I felt like that before anyway just booking by phone. We ordered a Swift Car to take us to Heathrow the night before an early flight…read more Unfortunately, due to a snafu with our out-of-country cell phone number, we missed their original call. When we called them back a few minutes later, we had to wait another 20 minutes for them to send a new cab as the original driver had been reassigned. That said, the ride to the airport was uneventful, and the driver made good effort to avoid excess traffic. The ride was also extremely reasonably priced compared to a regular taxi, and far more convenient than taking the Tube. I would recommend Swift Cars and will certainly use them again on my return to London.
