I've had the pleasure of knowing Sam for over 7 years, and each time we have had an issue with our home or rental property's AC he has been exceptional at diagnosing the issue and resolving it. Not only is Sam exceptionally skilled and knowledgeable in air conditioning units, but he also exemplifies what it means to be a true professional. From the moment he arrives, Sam demonstrates a high level of expertise and efficiency. Once the issue is diagnosed, he explains the problem and the solution clearly and patiently providing recommendations on what to do to prevent the issue in the future. What sets Sam apart, however, is his integrity and character. He is honest, transparent and fair. It's rare to find someone who combines technical excellence with such strong ethical values. Sam always goes above and beyond. For example, this evening (Saturday), we arrived home after a 12 hour road trip to find out our upstairs unit was not working. I called Sam and knowing it was late asked him if he could please come first thing Monday morning. I used this company once and the system is operating, but overall I left feeling that the service was more sales-driven than diagnostic-driven. The appointment was scheduled for 9 AM, but the technician did not arrive until around noon and said the appointment "didn't pop up" on his schedule. Delays happen, but there was no proactive communication beforehand. During the visit, I was advised to replace both capacitors ("boosters") primarily based on age, with the explanation that they should be replaced every 5 years. After looking into it further, capacitor replacement is typically based on measured capacitance/tolerance and overall condition, not age alone. Preventative replacement is understandable, but presenting 5 years as a blanket rule felt overly aggressive without discussing measurements. I was also sold 1 pound of refrigerant for each HVAC system. Since these are sealed systems, refrigerant generally does not get "used up." I would have expected at least some discussion about measured charge levels, whether leakage might exist, or whether the systems should simply be monitored over time. That conversation never happened. My biggest concern involved the condensate drain setup. My systems are configured as positive-pressure systems, and the technician advised leaving the drain openings near the trap uncapped because "positive airflow systems need them open." However, in both systems, one of the openings he left uncapped was located before the trap, which meant conditioned air was blowing directly into the attic from one air handler and into the crawlspace from the other. After I reinstalled the caps myself, drainage behavior immediately improved and I could hear water flowing through the traps properly again. My wife also immediately commented that the upstairs felt cooler afterward, likely because conditioned air was no longer leaking into the attic. I also asked questions about airflow restriction because the technician told me my filtration setup was wrong and that I could not have both 5-inch MERV 16 media filters at the air handlers and additional low-MERV filters at the returns. I asked how he determined the system was too restrictive and whether airflow or static pressure could be measured. He repeatedly stated that airflow "cannot be measured," which is simply incorrect. Airflow and system restriction can absolutely be evaluated through static pressure measurements and other standard HVAC diagnostic methods. He also focused only on the MERV rating itself without discussing filter depth, surface area, pressure drop, or what level of restriction would actually be considered problematic for the system. On top of that, I later discovered the filter cabinet cover had not been fully reinstalled and was left open by roughly half an inch. Besides causing additional air leakage, this was especially concerning because the system contains UV lights. When I checked the unit afterward, I could visibly see UV light escaping through the gap. HVAC systems using UV lights are supposed to remain properly closed and secured during operation to minimize unnecessary UV exposure and prevent conditioned air leakage. I had never removed or reinstalled that cover myself before, but when I checked it afterward, it took only a few seconds to seat and secure correctly. Finally, I was told that cooling diagnostics are basically "outdoor work only" and that there is generally no need to inspect indoor air handlers during AC service. That did not inspire much confidence, since airflow, evaporator condition, drainage, static pressure, filter setup, and indoor coil performance are all important parts of evaluating cooling performance. In total, I paid about $725 for two capacitors, two pounds of refrigerant, and the service visit. The experience left me feeling like I paid premium pricing without receiving especially thorough diagnostics, measurements, or explanations. Response to Owner: Unfortunately Yelp limits the response length, so I cannot fully respond to every point in your version of events. Instead, I'll focus on the part future customers probably care about most: expertise. You keep repeating that the caps should be off because the system is positive pressure, but that oversimplifies the issue. A cap before the trap is not the same thing as a vent after the trap. You did not appear to recognize the distinction and believed both openings should remain open. That undermines the purpose of the trap itself, which is to isolate blower pressure and stop conditioned air from escaping through the drain line. The opening before the trap was a cleanout. Removing the cleanout cap allowed conditioned air to blow directly into the attic/crawlspace. The vent belongs after the trap, not before it. Last year, Sam came by at 8PM on a hot day in June to attend to my broken AC. The top grill fell and the the fan got all chopped up; it was an older model, but Sam managed to find a replacement grill/fan combo and installed the sucker the very next day. Flash back to this June (thankfully I kept his card right on the fridge), the AC stopped working again on a hot afternoon. Sam came by again on a late night and troubleshooted the issue. Called this morning to set up a schedule for service work. When I called it seemed I woke the person up because they sounded quite groggy. They were not very helpful and almost seemed to not want to help me. The more I explained my units problem, the more it went in circles. He kept trying to diagnose the problem over the phone and not wanting to set up a service call. It wasn't till after I made the comment that I felt like he didn't want to help me that he said he would come out. I then realized I wasn't going to get anywhere with this person or company, so I decided best to take my business elsewhere. I've been in customer service for over 10+ years and know this is not how you want to treat someone when you run a business. Especially service calls. ***Update*** Within an hour of leaving this review, the person I spoke with at Air Specialists Heating and Cooling called me back and asked why I left a negative review. I explained to him why I felt his treatment earlier warranted a negative review. We talked back and forth about the entire situation. He explained that he had the flu, and I sympathized with him. He apologized for letting things go that way, and offered to come out and repair my heating unit at no cost. Whatever it would take to make things right. My gas furnace went out and I called this company for a second opinion. The first company I called said my furnace was not worth repairing and tried to sell me a new air and heating system. Sam came to my home and he found the two parts I needed and said there was nothing wrong with my furnace except needing the two parts. Winter of '15 has been extremely mild to say the least but the first legit cold snap that came through put our old heat pump out of commission. Being our first house and first repair call for a heat pump I wasn't sure what to expect but Sam was extremely helpful. We scheduled an appt and he was prompt, found the problem immediately and fixed it. Long story short our heat has been restored just in time for some gold ole Cary snow dusting!
