East Austin

Wow...so many typos in my first review. Clearly I was excited to be here…read more It's one of my favorite places to be in Austin. In addition to stellar bands, singers, and deejays, the staff are incredible. Let's not forget the amazing owner, Eileen. Truly salt the earth. Best place to bust out your dance moves. Even better, they're on the right side of history. Social justice warriors at their finest! Along with dance nights, I've attended quite a few social justice events here. Power to the People!

I met friends here for ladies night...first time this year. What happened? Arrived at Sahara lounge that was in a residential neighborhood...wait...what?! Live DJ spinning tunes from Prince and Michael Jackson to Abba and the Bee Gees and everything in between Low ceilings...looks like this place was a house converted to a lounge. Outside seating for resting between dances or simply chilling or frequenting outside bar Food truck alert...yes on the patio Massive number of regulars that extoll the joys of attending ladies night. Dancing in two locations - on the dance floor and small stage with DJ. Folks jumping up and down and dancing their hearts out. Dancing on the top of a large speaker...how cool was that? It's not aesthetically beautiful, but hugely popular. Dancing with strangers...meeting new people...admiring the dance. Dancing carefree...no judgements Sahara Lounge is a whole vibe!

Penfold Theatre - The cast and Yelpers

I bought tickets to see Clue at Penfold Theatre and had a great time. Check-in was quick and easy:…read moreI gave my name at the door and was directed to the room. The stage is small, but the team used the space creatively. Clever prop work turned it into multiple rooms, and the cast was fantastic throughout. It's a small, local community theater, and the passion really showed. Since it's a small space, any seat gives you a good and intimate view of the stage. One heads-up: there's no intermission for this particular play, so staff recommend using the restroom beforehand. With only two bathrooms, the line gets long, so I'd suggest arriving early to avoid missing the start. Overall, a charming production and a great way to support local arts. I'd happily come back for another show! Great job to the Clue cast!

This was my first visit to this theater, and thank to the Yelp reviews I decided to go see Clue…read more What a great choice and a fun evening! Check-in was easy, and the concessions offer a small selection of basics. The theater chairs could use an upgrade, but improvements are already in the works. As a wheelchair user, I sat in the accessible first row, which is probably the best seat in the house. I had a perfect view of the surprisingly large stage, and the cast made excellent use of it. The set pieces transformed the stage into different rooms in a clever, engaging way. Every actor was fantastic, and I laughed throughout the entertaining production. I'm so glad I gave this theater a try. I can't wait to see what they put on next and will definitely buy tickets again!

There is also a large parking garage nearby (free parking). AISD student art work is prominently displayed throughout the building. I was at the performing arts center for a Alvin Alley dance workshop. This dance group travels throughout the world featuring modern dance, ballet and Afro beat movements. During middle and high school years we got the opportunity to see the Alvin Alley dancers every year. Their performance was elegant, rhymic and exquisitely executed. I remember being in awe of their toned bodies and breathtaking athletic and graceful moves. I remember also thinking how beautiful their ballet moves. Today's Rhythm and Movement workshop was engaging, authentic and very enjoyable. I loved that the workshop was diverse - ages 6 to 70+ years old, from all walks of life and different ethnicities. Look forward to the Alvin Alley dance performance next week...

I've been to multiple productions here in the past 6 months. I'm reviewing the facility, not the…read moreproductions. The theater complex is conveniently situated at the edge of the Mueller development. Parking is covered, close, convenient, and FREE. Productions here are reasonably priced with tickets typically in the $10-15 per person range. Concessions are often run by boosters; while limited in their offerings, water is not $6 a bottle like it is at UT productions. The space is modern and attractive. In terms of comfort, I found the Black Box theater to be the less welcoming of the two. Seats are difficult to access in the risers, and I do not have mobility issues. The seats themselves are comfortable however. In sharp contrast, the main theater is very accommodating and comfortable. If accessibility is it all an issue I would check to see which theater your production is in before you buy the tickets. Highly recommended.

I haven't been to much theater in Austin (except the big productions) because I never know which…read moreones to go to. And i loathe sitting in shows that are bad because I've paid $15 a ticket and feel compelled to wait and see whether it will improve. Luckily, the show I saw here was funny and well done. Part of the Frontera Fest (long fringe) and the whole process was quite efficient. You're on the guest list? Great. Here's a program and a seat. In fact they were nice enough to provide me with a chair so I didnt have to traipse about the chairs on the risers. They've got sodas for sale but it may be BYO (check first) and they've got plenty of bathrooms. All good things to know when you're headed to a performance. If you get the chance to see a show here, do. Its a small theater so there are no bad seats and if you make sure you're not seeing bad theater, well then you're most likely in for a treat.

A fucking puppet show? Are you kidding me?…read more That's what I went to see at Salvage Vanguard Theater, and I liked it so much I went back for another show. I'll be back again. Now, I've only seen their puppet shows, I have no idea if they do other things. The puppet shows are different from anything you've seen: excessively dark, and no strings attached. The puppeteers wear dark beekeeper like suits and hold the brightly painted puppets up and manipulate them from behind. You can see everything that's going on, but within a minute or two, you forget the puppeteers are there and the characters take a life of their own. And what characters! It's obviously all-original and all home made, but they do such a good job of creating compelling characters and stories for them to tell that you'll wonder why they aren't more successful. My girlfriend and I still endlessly quote the shows we've seen and we keep trying to describe the characters and stories in a way that makes sense. It seems we utterly fail at that, and it's why I'm going to keep my review short. This place doesn't make sense. The show doesn't make sense out of context. It doesn't look like much from the outside ... or the inside. But trust me. I give it five stars for a reason, and this isn't even ordinarily my scene. I've tried to convince all my friends to go with varying levels of success, but no one has been disappointed and they all want to come back for more. If you've found it, go experience it.
