I can't speak highly enough of the Broadway In Austin productions. They have a great line-up every year and the performances are always top notch. Looking forward to next season.

Back for the new season. This one is kicking off with M.J.. What an incredible production and a great way to draw people in to what the rest of the season can be. The direction and leadership Broadway in Austin has and the show selection year of year makes it easy to resubscribe as early as possible.

Broadway-style musicals aren't for everyone, I understand, but if you're like me and can happily belt out the Les Miserables soundtrack backward and forward from memory, you're going to want to check out some of the national touring shows that come through town via Broadway in Austin at UT's Texas Performing Arts Center, aka Bass Concert Hall. I've never seen a show in one of the New York performing arts theaters, but I've seen too many to count here and I'll be coming back for as long as I'm living in Austin. Nothing beats seeing a stage full of earnest, traveling performers singing and dancing their hearts out and being part of that enthusiastic audience to reward their hard work with applause. The folks who work the venue are generally lovely, many of them volunteers who are as excited as you are to see the show and support the arts. Sound, lighting, and special effects are as excellent as the touring production intends them to be. Pricing still offers a level for every budget, unlike many of our other performing arts options in town (ahem, Moody Center, cough cough). If you don't mind sitting in the tight 2nd balcony, you can sometimes get seats for as low as $35 (plus $7 in fees), while the Orchestra rows closest to the stage are going to set you back $150 (plus $20 in fees) or more. Some logistics advice for your next visit: - Parking on the UT campus has always been a challenge and it's even moreso since the opening of the Moody Center down the street. Plan well ahead of show day on how you will carpool / rideshare / scooter your way over. If you are physically able and don't mind a nice half-mile stroll, you will have many more parking options that aren't nearly as expensive or slow-exiting as one of the adjacent campus garages. Use the ParkWhiz app to find them. If you are early enough, you may also be able to snag one of the sweet, limited City of Austin metered spots on Dean Keeton, Red River, and north of there, but don't get caught in those restricted residential street parking spots. - Season (September - August annually) ticket holders and Texas Inner Circle members get extra perks that are quite nice, so if you love this type of show, it's worth a look. Membership and subscription slots are limited, so get on the waitlist if you think you might wanna do this next year; notifications generally come out in July. (See https://austin.broadway.com/subscriptions/ and https://texasperformingarts.org/sites/files/tpa/2223_dev_tic_memberbenefitschart_8p5x11_v4.pdf ). I'm lucky to have a friend who often invites me to her season ticket events and it's so fun to visit the VIP lounge upstairs and have our intermission cocktails made and waiting for us by name. The full current calendar of events is online at https://texasperformingarts.org/events/calendar - Drinks are sold at the lobby bars on each level and can be taken into the theater. Food can't be taken into the theater and is limited to snacks ($3-$6) and small "meal prep" trays ($8-$15) available on the 3rd floor cafe/lounge. There are usually a few fun themed menu items for each show. See the full regular menu here: https://texasperformingarts.org/visit/eat-drink - Merch is sold right in the front lobby after security. Programs are handed out as you enter the theater. Show cast substitutions (if any) will be posted on the pillars near the first floor bars, or offered as an insert to the program. - Check out the TPA website for much more detail about the venue's security policies and amenities.Things like "no re-entry", "no outside food or beverages", and "use a small/clear purse if you want your trip through security to go faster" https://texasperformingarts.org/visit

So much fun! Very expensive inside the venue and recommend downloading and paying for parking in advance. However, the shows are top notch, friendly and knowledgeable staff and wider than average aisles make it a must! Make the Grinch a part of your new family tradition!

Went to see The Grinch Who Stole Christmas! What a great show! The show was moved up from my normal season pass showtime, but I was notified in advance. I enjoy the show-themed drinks that are usually paired with each Broadway show. The Bass Hall will also have some snack boxes or small items to purchase food wise, if you're hungry. Staff are all friendly and helpful!

Came here to see Ain't To Proud. It's a play based on the singing group the Temptations. This was originally a gift to my mom because she loves the Temptations, but in the end, they gained a new fan. The performance was amazing! It highlighted the life and times of the Temptations. From the moment the group was created until now. There's several laughing moments, crying moments, and serious moments. Oh, and the cast members can sang!! I am glad I attended. Can't wait until my next show/musical!

The big poster showing To Kill A Mockingbird.

This was such a thrill to attend the Broadway show To Kill A Mockingbird in Austin with an amazing cast and production at Bass Concert Hall. Thank you Yelp for giving me the opportunity to attend!! As a fellow actor, I found it especially spectacular to be there. The set design and cast were outstanding. Richard Thomas, Yaegel T. Welch, David Manis and Melanie Moore had stand out shining performances and the rest of the cast was amazing too. The staff was super helpful and friendly in helping me find my way to the press table and ushers to find my seat. The lines were long to get to the bathroom or get a drink. That was a bit shocking to have a drink be 35$ while a generous portion, I didn't see the menu because every time I looked up to the screen it was an ad flashing on there. LOL. This was my first time attending a performance at this venue and I was pleased with everything. The parking garage was close by with a few to choose from. I parked at the one near the stadium. I hope to attend many more events at this venue and of course a lot more grand plays.

Just got home from watching Charlie and the chocolate factory! It was sooo much fun! The first half was a little bit slow mich like the original movie but it really takes off in the second half. It was colorful and creative and the best part definitely was the oompa loompas. What a magical evening! (Get there right before 6 to find free street parking! Then lounge around and get a drink at the bars before show time.)

    Loving Broadway in Austin!
    Marisol R.

Third time. Still a charm! I'm a Broadway nut. I've seen over 20 shows on Broadway so any time a show comes traipsing around my beloved Austin, I'm in the ticket line. I was thrilled to receive tickets from Yelp and I promptly bought two extra tickets so I could take my whole hoard of children. The show was a spectacular production! My kids thought it was completely peculiar. But what I love about that is....it challenges their mind, they couldn't stop talking about it and asking questions about what it meant and who was who and "why was that so weird" etc. Firing up their brains!!!... instead of mindlessly trolling Instagram. I even saw my son followed two of the main actors instagram accounts! So it definitely reached them on a level. So cute. Excellent venue for a world class show and performance. I am truly thankful for the Yelp/Broadway Across America partnership. Thank you for a truly thought provoking family evening out!

    Sponsored by Lexus of Austin!
    Michel F.

We got free seats from Yelp for An American in Paris. Thanks @Luci_H. and Yelp! My wife was very happy with her evening and that gives you a lot of extra points in my world :-). I didn't realize that the event was also sponsored by Lexus and I happen to drive one, so that gave us extra perks with the valet service! Yeah! Picking up tickets at the press booth was a breeze, and so everything was pointing towards a great evening. And it sure was! I agree with other reviews that the amount of dancing surprised me a little in a Broadway show, but what a show and what a beautiful decor, video effects, etc... And even though we were sitting in the very rear of the Orchestra, the sound was excellent. The story was dear to me, a Parisian in Austin. It resonated with me because of what my parents lived during WWII in France and all the atrocities that happened then. Beautiful story and singing. Ballet was great too, though I'm not too much into that. On an amusing note, I did think that the courting of Lise by Gerry Mulligan and his steamrolling approach to women would probably be referred to as sexual harrassment in today's world. He will not take no for an answer and he wins. Not the story we want to tell today, but times have changed I suppose from when the movie was made in 1951...

Press Night at A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder
    Shveta M.

I had the privilege of watching A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder tonight with my hubs for a date night and loved it! I laughed so much and I'd see the show again! To be honest, I didn't know much about the show and intentionally didn't read about it beforehand. I found myself really getting into the story, actors, and giggling quite a lot. I wasn't the only one laughing so you don't have to be concerned about my sense of humor. Anyway, if you have the opportunity to grab some tickets, please go! Tip: don't carry in a large handbag or tote as you'll have to check it in. You're welcome to drink in the theater but don't think about bringing food in. There is nothing more annoying than hearing the crinkling of paper while you're trying to concentrate. The LBJ parking isn't free anymore either. If you have a Lexus, you get complementary valet! Thank you Luci and Yelp for the tickets!

    Waiting for Cinderella...

Hamilton, Hamilton, it took forever to finally meet you. And while I'm first to be impressed with new & clever staging - that revolving center set was brilliant - this show was also thirty-four straight songs with no dialogue, and that requires some serious attention to lyrics. A lot of effort from both the cast and audience in this one. But the magic word here is still "fresh" - if nothing else, Hamilton is still an amazing reimagining of our founding fathers era, and its impact seems even more magnified within today's political context: An Asian George Washington? I'm in. In fact, the only Anglo character with lines in the whole play is King George, and he's apparently bent on making Broadway great again. It comes pretty close. I could go on & on about this, because Hamilton the man is indeed underrated in traditional history annals. Probably because when you ultimately lose a duel, your legacy becomes blurred. But if you're simply interested in current Broadway musicals, you're pretty much obligated to see this one. At least once. And finally, it was the first time I've seen the staff at this normally laid-back Texas Performing Arts venue a little overwhelmed, especially with the intermission crowd. And were these the priciest tickets I've ever seen for a Broadway in Austin performance? Why yes, they were. Worth it? Well, let me respond with a hearty "Heigh-Ho YOLO," on that one.

AP relies on a cast of seasoned local talent, including the brilliant and talented Michael Stuart, to provide a broad variety of theatrical productions each season. For live theater, the prices are reasonable, with half-price student tickets and guest ticket discounts for season ticket holders. The one thing I really appreciate about this venue is (and I repeat myself) the intimacy of the seating and stage. The stage literally ends at the edge of the first row. The most distant seats are no more than twenty feet from the stage, making the production even more real and audience connected. You get the feeling you are literally part of the play; there is no significant degree of separation between the actors and the audience. The other thing that I love is that it's literally a working company. Don Toner himself will often call back to confirm seating reservations. If it's not Don, it's frequently one of the other cast members. When you have a special request, there is no "box-office" detachment. And, at the end of the play, Don's waiting at the door to shake your hand and welcomes your comments regarding the performance. If you'd asked me ten years ago if I would ever be caught dead watching five plays a year, my answer would have been an emphatic "no". Thanks to one of Don's Actor's Equity members, John Hoff, I got hooked. John's no longer connected with the group as he's living in Colorado, but I thank him for instilling the appreciation for this troup in me. P.S. One of their most acclaimed productions is "Dead Presidents' Club", which is showing for one more day (11/9/2008) at Evans Auditorium at Texas State University-San Marcos. If you have time to catch this production today, do so. If you miss, pray for a summer revival in 2009!

The staff was very friendly at the entrance, the bar, and when seating. The place is pretty big and has upstairs and downstairs seating as well as a bar on several levels. Two points that did bring the visit a little down. The seating, you are packed in like sardines. No room to stretch even a little, you bump against the stranger next to you or them into you. It is almost worse then an airplane. Two no handrails on several stairs which are also uneven. I have some ongoing spine and foot pain and it caused me issues but I saw several other people struggling and one almost falling themselves. Had it been just me or maybe one other person that would be bad enough but as several people struggled that is a huge safety issue and should be fixed. The ushers helped when they could but sometimes they were helping others and didn't see it happen. Still it was a fun time, if a bit cramped. The staff is great and I love the history but that also means it is very outdated and not very comfy to sit for an hour or more, especially with no intermission.

The puppeteers wear dark beekeeper like suits and hold the brightly painted puppets up and manipulate them from behind. You can see everything that's going on, but within a minute or two, you forget the puppeteers are there and the characters take a life of their own. And what characters! It's obviously all-original and all home made, but they do such a good job of creating compelling characters and stories for them to tell that you'll wonder why they aren't more successful. My girlfriend and I still endlessly quote the shows we've seen and we keep trying to describe the characters and stories in a way that makes sense. It seems we utterly fail at that, and it's why I'm going to keep my review short. This place doesn't make sense. The show doesn't make sense out of context. It doesn't look like much from the outside ... or the inside. But trust me. I give it five stars for a reason, and this isn't even ordinarily my scene. I've tried to convince all my friends to go with varying levels of success, but no one has been disappointed and they all want to come back for more. If you've found it, go experience it.
