I am genuinely disappointed to write this review and cannot recommend Ren Newey or 36th Street Events. Our kids hired this planner, and from the very beginning there were warning signs-but the scope of the issues that unfolded went far beyond anything we could have anticipated. From not remembering meeting the groom after a one-hour introductory call, to ongoing disorganization, to inconsistent and frequently changing pricing, the experience was stressful throughout. We were quoted inflated costs for items such as generators-significantly higher than what we were able to negotiate ourselves-and were directed to vendors whose pricing was nearly ten times higher than identical products available on Etsy. Despite being repeatedly reassured that all details were handled, several critical failures occurred on the wedding day. The string quartet never arrived because 36th Street Events sent their information to an outdated email address. Instead of notifying the bride, groom, or any parents about the mistake, recorded music was played without explanation. Requested site visits never happened, staffing was not confirmed, and as a result dinner was delayed by 60-90 minutes, guests had no water available, and the wrong song was played for the father-daughter dance. These operational missteps were extremely disappointing. However, the most troubling aspect was the unprofessional and at times blatantly rude behavior displayed by Ren toward parents, guests, and even the priest officiating the ceremony. Multiple guests approached us asking why the wedding coordinator was so dismissive and why, as family members scrambled to help guests during a sudden rain, she stood by and watched. Prior to the bride and groom entering the reception, Ren told the groom he should button his jacket so he "didn't look fat." All of the above are just a few examples of the disappointment. For an event as meaningful as a wedding, professionalism, organization, and care matter enormously--and sadly, these were consistently lacking. Ren Newey was a top notch wedding planner and I can't recommend her or 36th Street Event enough! She spent so much extra time making our wedding feel like her sole priority. She had the best recommendations for all vendors the best being the band. Multiple family and friends have said it was the best wedding they have ever been too. Being a type A bride, Ren was there to answer any and all questions and calm any nerves about plans going into the weekend. Hiring Beth might have been the best spent dollars in all of my wedding planning. After securing a venue and a date, it was literally my next step. I was planning an Austin wedding from San Francisco and Beth's help was invaluable. I interviewed a few different wedding planners/coordinators in the Austin Area that I found from a combination of yelp and stylemepretty.com and immediately liked the flexibility 36th Street Events allows you in creating your own package from a menu of "a la carte" services. But I was slightly worried about why their prices were better than the competitors. Did it mean they were less qualified? Then I called one of Beth's references (a bride whose wedding I had relentlessly drooled over on SMP by the way) and she said the exact same thing. She said - you are wondering what you are missing... right? And she told me all the ways Beth had gone above and beyond to make her wedding special. And I realized I was not only in good hands, but was also going to save a buck or two. Flash forward a year later. I am 5 days post wedding and so completely over the moon with how everything went. When last minute weather threatened to ruin my 100% outdoor, 100% destination wedding, I was on the verge of a breakdown. Then I got a call from Beth. "I have talked to the venue about a tent, have a tent quote, and have communicated the new rain plan to all your vendors. Call if you want to know the details!". Best voice mail ever. I didn't even have time to stress about the problem before it was solved. And I didn't miss a beat at the wedding. The second my champagne glass was empty, there was Beth with a refill. I got to sit and enjoy dinner and visit with my friends without a single concern. I could literally go on forever... but you get the gist. Ren Newey was so helpful in every single aspect of the planning process! She was so friendly, fun, and outgoing but also made sure to keep us on track, hit our deadlines, and paid close attention to detail. She had great suggestions for vendors and knew what worked well and what wasn't really worth the money. She helped to keep our budget in check, but also knew when it was worth it to splurge on certain items. We hired the 36th Street Events team over a year before our wedding, with the assurances that Ren (a Senior Planner), was experienced with out of state / destination weddings and would be the boots on the ground that we needed for our big day. Unfortunately, this decision ended up costing us time, money & extreme stress during our planning season. While responsive for the initial meet & greet calls / emails, as soon as the contract was signed the communication took a nose dive. Meetings were missed without warning (sat in a Zoom waiting room for 45 minutes until we got a text saying that something had come up), emails weren't responded to for 2-3 weeks *on average* and information that was promised "right after our planning call" wasn't received until 6 months later (after we had requested it 3 times). This was very disappointing to us, as we had hoped to tackle most of our planning on the front end so we could lighten the load during the months leading up to the wedding. We tried to assume the best - maybe it was busy season, and we still have lots of time! But 6 months into the contract (and 6 months before our wedding) with little to no planning complete, we finally raised our concerns/frustrations and were met with an email that was bereft of an apology, and instead offered to "relieve us of our contract." This was the first time we had mentioned any frustration, and rather than a simple apology and promise to do better, it became clear that Ren did not have the bandwidth for our wedding and would have preferred to have it taken off her plate rather than consider our experience as bride & groom. In fact, she mentioned that she had 3x the amount of weddings this season compared to a normal year. Which to us seemed like they had taken on more than they could chew...which should never be the client's fault. When we asked to speak with the owner of the company (Beth) to work through a solution and see if there was another planner that had more bandwidth, we were again met with no apology & informed that the only available planners were too junior or on maternity leave. So, we opted to part ways. Our assumption that "being relieved of our contract" would mean we would get our money back to hire a similar level planner since Ren was unable to, ended up proving wrong. They kept $3,000+ of our funds on the grounds that "per their contract, refunds are not typically offered and the $3,000 would cover the time that was spent" so we should be glad to receive anything back at all. To clarify, we had attended 1 in-person meeting, and a few phone calls at this point. So there we were, 6 months out from our wedding with very little planning done & no help, or references for hiring a new one. After flying down to Austin we hired a new team, they reviewed the work done and were shocked so little had been done in 6 months. They scrambled to help us pull a design together and get a few vendors in place, many of which responded by saying they were already booked for our date and that we should've reached out earlier. We waited till after our wedding date to post this but felt that this situation was so poorly mishandled we needed to make others aware. read more

I can't say enough wonderful things about Chanler from 36th Street Events - she is truly an angel that made my wedding day so perfect. Don't even think twice, and book her . She will truly make your day so special and worry-free. I got to really take in my wedding day and live in the moment which is really every bride's dream. On top of that, she felt like a best friend which was really comforting. My husband also couldn't believe how amazing she was at her job, and our entire wedding party was just so impressed. My wedding venue, Ma Maison, requires you to book a day of planner and I did A LOT of interviews with different preferred wedding planning companies and their planners, but most of them felt so intense and honestly stressed me out. I wanted my day of planner to feel like one of my friends since they are literally with you every step of the way on your wedding day. As soon as I had a call with Chanler I knew right away she was the wedding planner I wanted to book. She has a calm but very cheerful demeanor, and brings such a positive vibe to all things. While Ma Maison did require me to book a day of planner, looking back I would book Chanler whether it was required or not because she took so much stress off my plate during the pre-planning process & made my wedding day run smoother than butter! Let's talk details: --Pre-planning process: While I booked the "day of planning" package, services actually start ~6 weeks out where Chanler took over all of my vendor & contract communication (so helpful!). Even before the 6 week timeline, Chanler and I met for coffee so that I could tell her my wedding plans and ask questions. From there, Chanler put together an initial timeline that we were able to make changes to along the way. This was extremely helpful because I had no idea where to start with a timeline. Chanler also provided me with pre-planning documents and checklists which was kept us on track. She did this in a shared excel/word doc which made it so EASY to make comments to eachother & have timely communication. Every bride knows how stressful wedding planning can be, and Chanler made the process organized to help me not get over-whelmed. --Rehearsal: My wedding party was SO IMPRESSED with Chanler! She is spunky and professional & did an amazing job getting our large wedding party (20 people total + parents) to follow instructions. Chanler did a great job getting our wedding party to listen and have a successful rehearsal but to also enjoy it (other weddings I've been in, it can sometimes feel like a chore). Everyone was clear on the expectations from the start. The timeline spreadsheet provided was very nice to have and allowed us to customize it and add/subtract things if necessary. So helpful! Coming from an events agency background myself, it was important to me that I didn't need to worry about anything and that the planner had processes and procedures that made the event seamless. I truly was able to throw all of my already planned details, not so planned details, and details I didn't know about yet at my planner (Chanler). She was as involved as she needed to be as a month of planner (as in, she wasn't all over me, nor did she ghost when I needed - she was perfectly accessible). And she took all of my details and executed the event flawlessly and with a smile on her face! I am SO incredibly impressed with the job that Jessika did for my recent Zilker Clubhouse wedding. It was September in Austin, and weather was a risk, so we had to make the call only 1 day before to find a tent vendor. Jessika took the reins and made it all happen. At the last minute, she was able to meet them at the crack of dawn for set up and then again early the next morning for tear down. On top of all the last minute tenting, she and her team set up our string lights after our vendor completely flaked. Bethany DOMINATED our $100k wedding from start to finish. Her design was gorgeous, she always had great ideas and input, but she never tried to push us in a direction we didn't want to go. She stayed on top of our budget and made sure that we came in right where we needed to be, and she met with us regularly to make sure that we were doing our part by reviewing proposals and working on guest lists. She was there for every vendor meeting, and her experience as a wedding planner helped us visualize exactly how things would turn out. On wedding day, Bethany and her assistant made sure everything happened without a hitch. When one of my groomsmen lost a button from his tux, she sewed it back on in record time; when a friend spilled something on my wife's dress, she grabbed her emergency kit and went to work lifting the pesky stain away from the prying eyes of our guests. She made sure we had time to actually eat at the reception and visit with our friends, and she followed up with us to make sure everything was going smoothly from our perspective. You may have seen the fireworks over Lady Bird Lake that night - they made it into the Statesman. Resha, one of the owners, was my planner for about 9 months leading up to the event. She secured contracts with about 12 different vendors and negotiated reduced rates with the majority. She answered all my emails and calls in a timely fashion and put out all the fires that can occur in the wedding planning process. She made it a fun process and kept me sane throughout. I can't even begin to rave about Beth Walker!!! She is absolutely amazing!! I had originally hired a different wedding planner, and found myself doing everything by myself. Jessika was amazing for my wedding at the Zilker Clubhouse last February. It was my second wedding, and I had used another much more expensive and famous coordinator for my much more lavish first wedding. Jessika was twice as good while costing one-fifth as much. She made lots of day-of decisions, including big decisions about decor and staging, all of which were perfectly in keeping with my vision for the wedding. My family, my husband, and I are SO impressed with Ren Newey and 36th street events after our April wedding in Austin. This was a destination wedding for us and planning was a challenge as my (then) fiancé and I live in Chicago. Ren was an absolute superstar when it came to making sure everything was perfect. Our ceremony was Indian Catholic so a lot of different arrangements needed to be made with the Roman Catholic Church that we had our ceremony at. Ren did great working with the church from start to finish. Our reception had a lot of Indian cultural components and though it was her first Indian reception, she NAILED it. She worked with the JW Marriott and various vendors to make my vision a reality despite last minute changes and additions. I was speechless when I walked into the reception and saw the decor. This company is absolutely fantastic and I highly recommend them and especially Ren. She is extremely organized, punctual, and creative. We are so thankful for 36th street events' help making our dream wedding a reality! read more

For my sister's wedding, we were stuck with Lindy and Bethany aka 'Hannah Montana.' Not only were these 'girls' immature and the most un-organized pair, they were lazy, rude and brought two interns wearing jeans to our black tie wedding and reception at the Four Seasons. They failed to ensure details, including the runner for my sister to walk on for our outside wedding. Bouquets were inccorect, champagne wasn't served during our champange toasts, and my brother ended up carrying 6 tux's to Bethany's car. She lied and said all bell hop's were busy, when in fact my brother said when he reached the lobby, two of them asked my brother why he didn't call them to help! We wished we had Resha, she seems to be the only competent wedding planner at 36th Street Events. The girls obviously were in over their heads and couldn't handle an event of this size and high dollar amount. read more

The very best decision we made during the wedding process was to hire Beth from 36th Street Events for our 3-22-2014 ceremony. Beth is creative, fun, a consummate professional, and an incredible listener. But the thing that most captivated us about her was her warm, kind, totally CALM, unflappable demeanor, a Godsend to any bride and her mother. You never see her sweat and she makes sure you don't spend a moment of this very special time worrying about anything. Her vast experience, particularly with Laguna Gloria weddings and the venue's many unique requirements, along with her exceptional relationships with some of Austin's finest vendors made her the perfect choice for us. Her recommendations for event supplies and beverage vendors, florist, wedding cake, photographer, car rental, caterer, hair stylist, and DJ were all outstanding. The fact that the bride and groom both live in London was going to make opportunities for them to be "hands on" fairly limited. Not a problem. Beth was more than happy to visit with them by Skype and FaceTime, allowing them to be very present in the decision making process throughout. She completely connected with and facilitated some of the very special European traditions they hoped to incorporate. But the best thing about contracting with 36th Street Events was, not only did we have Beth, but we had the backup of her entire magnificent team should any need arise. And, in our case, it did. Beth's first baby, due shortly after the wedding, decided to make her very surprise entrance into the world two weeks before our big event. Although we were sad that Beth, now a part of our family, wouldn't be able to finish the journey with us, her associates Ren and Gillian and a great team of interns, stepped in immediately picking up right where Beth left off. It was an absolutely seamlessly transition and they were just as fantastic to work with. There is not enough room here to tell the many special ways they all came through for us in our year of planning and on the wedding day. Just want to say that the outcome was a dream come true. Weddings, as you probably already have discovered in the planning stages of your own, are stressful and expensive. No matter how you approach it, be it a large or small wedding, stress will most likely become overwhelming and everything will be more expensive than you had ever planned for--oftentimes insultingly so. At least that was our experience, until we were fortunate enough to happen upon Gillian Calley at 36th Street Events. We thought we would save money on a wedding planner and do it all ourselves and as the stress ratcheted up in the months leading up to the big day, we were introduced to Gillian through a friend. She literally saved the day, relieved all the stress and allowed my wife and I to concentrate on each other, our family, our friends and on having one of the most memorable weekends of our lives. Like I mentioned before, everything at a wedding is overpriced, vendors often taking advantage of people and their sentimentality--except Gillian. She was the only aspect of our experience truly worth every single penny and someone we just loved planning and hanging out with leading up to the big event. I've known a lot of major event planners in Austin, as it is arguably one of the biggest event cities in the country, and Gillian is undoubtedly one of the best, be it for a wedding or anything else important that you may need planned. read more

Beth Walker is the consummate professional - detail-oriented, prompt, communicative, and thoughtful - while also being fun, enthusiastic, supportive, and generally a delight to work with! Her follow-through is excellent. Throughout my engagement, I noticed all of my other vendors respected and enjoyed working with her too, which made the planning process much easier. Beth will spot and provide the finishing touches you may have forgotten to plan in advance of your wedding day (She created lovely mirrored signs for our hot cocoa and coffee station that I didn't see until the reception) and thinks on her feet (She came up with a last-minute Plan B when our getaway car and driver didn't show up!). I have, admittedly, an obsessively detail-oriented, meticulous personality (which was, of course, draw out when planning my wedding), and Beth met and exceeded the expectations I had for my coordinator. She is a gem, and I highly recommend working with her and the ladies of 36th Street Events! read more
