    Nigerian meatpie

The parking lot is a tight fit. But this cute adorable resturant. The temp was a tad high maybe the ac broke this day. The server was lod, the service was quick. I love that it is family owned. We had a couple of things here and the food was delicious, this was my first time trying and I want to try more items.

This is Fufu & Egusi stew with their Chapman drink. 10/10

Last time I was here was back in May and I had a craving for it today, and to my surprise, it's even better than it was before!! Their Chapman drink is also like nothing else I've had, very very good!!

Okra- very little stew and almost exclusively bone turkey

Not good value for the price. I have been here twice in the past 6 months and the meat (I have ordered chicken, beef, and turkey) is particularly disappointing -85% of it is bones. This 2nd visit I got the okra and they were very stingy with the stew (didn't seem like more than a table spoon). Fufu was cold. Flavors were decent but for approx $28, after tax this was a rip off. Tempe is a bit of a hike for me, but Nedu's kitchen does a way better job. **They also charged 11.8% tax on the total, which is pretty darn high

53.66 for 2 very small plates. 1 piece of chicken and a small amount of egusi (the egusi barely had palm oil) and 1 pounded yam.
    Alex

    1. The pounded yam was not even IYAN! It was a regular potato pounded to imitate IYAN! 2. Look at this small meal for $53 this is robbery! 3. The egusi barely had palm oil and was very watery and tasted like it sat in a pot of water! 4. The chicken was so dry it was sooo sad that on my birthday I drove from EPhoenix to come here what and very terrible thing to do to someone. I'll never return. This place can improve on plate sizes make the plate size match the price and cook the egusi correctly. If you're tired of short on ingredients DONT open shop!

    Amala and gbegiri

I visited Agege Bites my first time in the Phoenix area and it was more than I expected, I had Amala and gbegiri and had a to go of white rice and ayamase stew and the food did not disappoint, portions were also filling so that was really good for the prices. The reception was very friendly and the restaurant had enough space for a dine in so that was also good as I had to wait for my uber. It had elements of Lagos from the Ayo, ludo games and books, it was lovely to see the cultural element and all made the ambience feel like home. But all in all, asides from food, they also had clothing merch so i indeed had a lovely time being there, a must visit also if in the area.

My teenagers are all about TikTok and this place didn't disappoint! Total win and the girls got to try new food from a new country. Everything was sharable and yummy!

    Extra meat. Lol

Agege Bites is for people who've never eaten Nigerian Food. Pros: 1. Friendly staff. Cons: 1. Reviews from people trying nigerian food for the first time. Someone said "very similar to Caribbean and Spanish flavors mixed with habanero spices". Christ. The only similarity between west african food and spanish food is plantain and the use of rice. Gotta love Arizona. 2. Tried the Egusi Soup (3.8/10): This is the type of egusi soup that aunties in a village make 10 year olds make. Heavily stew based; not an ounce of palm oil. And this $25 meal comes with 1 piece of meat. If you want to know what egusi looks like..look up "Calabash African Kitchen" in vegas. That place is ran by a chef who gives af about providing customers with authentic food. 3. Tried the Suya (2/10): They got the flavor right but the texture is fucked. Suya meat shouldnt be wet. And it was missing Onions. $20 for a palm full of this crap. 4. Tried the puff puff (6/10). Decent but not much flavor going on. Needs more sweetness. Atleast the texture was correct on this one Summary: Paying high prices for an abysmal attempt at nigerian food will leave you sore. A spot like this in NYC wouldn't last a week. If you've never had west african food then you probably wouldn't mind this food. You truly wouldn't know any better but believe this...the real thing is 50x better.

    Menu from August 2024
    Daniel N.

Came in and I was the only person there. Lady at counter greeted, told me to get the menu and ordered where she is at. About 10 minutes later a small family arrived and the lady ran to them, greeted and took their order at the table. Same for the other guy after them... After about 30 minutes of waiting my pepper soup (goat meat) with swallow (fufu) arrived. Somehow the small family and the other guy who ordered more than I did their foods arrived before me. The foods were decent however the service leave a bad taste. I'm all into supporting local businesses but, the customer services needs work. They should treat everyone the same and not selective. I felt unwelcome as the only Asian eating there.

The spices and "soups" (more like stews) are exotic, similar to Indian food in presentation, but very different in how the meats are prepared. Traditionally, you eat the soups with fufu. I would describe fufu like a thick, glutinous, fairly bland, root paste used as the delivery vehicle for the soup to your face instead of a fork or spoon. No utensils! Fingers only and it makes the experience even more fun. The fufu pairs perfectly with the soups and is very filling. One entree easily makes for leftovers. I believe the African goddess that cooked and delivered the food to our table is the owner. She knew it was our first time and you could feel her care in the preparation and her joy in explaining the best way to eat. The dining area has about a dozen standard diner style tables and there is a sink IN the corner of the dining room to conveniently wash your hands, before and after eating. This no frills, locally owned treasure is a must try. If you are intimidated by new cuisines eaten in untraditional ways, look up "Egusi and Fufu" on your favorite social streaming app to learn everything you need to know. You will walk in with confidence. Regardless, the fine folks working here are also kind and eager to help and make recommendations. I'm posting with updated menu photos (Nov 2025). Prices seem to range $20-$25 per soup including the fufu. We had the Egusi and the Cassava Leaf soups. Both fresh, amazing and in my opinion a good value.

But, unfortunately for me my experience was the exact opposite . This location is set in the Tempe food court. So automatically I was turned off by the fact it's not personable no interaction with the actual creator or business owner . You have to order through a kiosk ( which I do understand the idea of conveniency culture .) But places like this deserve to be show cased . What I ordered was fried plantains, Ogbono Soup , with two pieces of chicken , poundo fufu, and two sodas . For starters , The plantains were a bit undercooked, the soup was lacking flavor very ( oily , had no other contents but broth and the chicken ) so what was advertised on the menu looked NOTHING like what I got , no fixings such as ( no okra , the peppers etc) . The chicken was dry and it didn't taste fresh at all , it had this peculiar after taste I couldn't quite put my finger on. Overall I wasn't at all satisfied with my food and I'd say this meal in particular wasn't worth the $51.00 whatsoever. I want to say I stand firmly on supporting black businesses, but I won't lie about my experience. I'd say i would give this place a second try and at least come back to try the Jollof rice since that seems to be their top seller as it was sold out .

From the moment you walk in, it feels less like a restaurant and more like you've been invited into someone's home for dinner. The cocktail program deserves its own shoutout. Every drink was thoughtfully crafted and easily some of the best cocktails I've had in the area. The service was warm, attentive, and genuine without ever feeling forced. As for the food, everything we ordered was excellent. The standout dishes for us were the goat cheese appetizer, the oxtail entrée, and the pound cake dessert. There wasn't a single dish that made us think, "we shouldn't have ordered that." At the end of the day, plenty of restaurants have good food. What sets this place apart is the overall experience. Starting with the appetizers, I'd say these two were my favorites of the night. The chicken wings (5 pieces) were tender and flavorful, featuring a very unique spice blend. The whipped goat cheese wasn't overly gamey, it was perfectly creamy and paired well with the black garlic honey, which tasted a lot like fig jam. The homemade chapati was great too. However, the ratio of cheese to bread was a bit off. We heard a server asking the next table if they wanted more chapati, so we assumed an extra piece was complimentary. We later found out we were charged $6 for it, which was a bit of a surprise tho. As for the entrees, the oxtail barbacoa was the biggest oxtail I've ever seen. It was packed with tender meat and rich gelatin, and the radiatori pasta with gouda was wonderfully creamy and delicious. The lamb griot was a unique dish I hadn't tried before, while the portion of lamb wasn't huge, it was very good. The plantains were amazing and slightly sweet, making the whole dish incredibly flavorful. Overall, it was a really cool experience. The food is highly seasoned and flavorful without being overly salty like most restaurants, though it is definitely on the pricier side. Our server was very busy that night, so checking out took quite a bit of time. The atmosphere is awesome with great decor, merchs, and live performances. ps. This recent visit was my third time having Ethiopian food, and I went in with an open mind. I remembered the last time I had Ethiopian food, I didn't really enjoy it. You have the option of choosing from their platters, or you can build your own. I created my own platter - I got the lamb dish (#5), the chicken dish (#3), and lentils (#9). These 3 dishes came on injera, which is a sour, fermented flatbread. It is basically a plate for the food, but you also use it to scoop up the meat/lentils to eat. My order also came with several more pieces of injera. The injera "plate" got soggy from the meat and lentils, so it was harder to use it to grab the fillings because it just kept falling apart. The chicken wasn't that great, so I wouldn't order that again, but the lamb dish and the lentils were sooo good. I had enough leftover for a second meal. I'm glad I gave Ethiopian food another chance! Next time, I would probably get the beef, lamb, and lentils.

We ended up getting platters off the menu instead, mostly ordering vegetarian. (But if you're hungry or want more food, the buffet is a good option.) The green beans and the collards are a solid combination because of the difference in texture and spice. Cabbage, fish and beef were also good. Everything came either on a bed of injeera (soft) or rice, or a combination. On weekdays they have lunch specials which are the best deals and very good and inevitably you'll have leftovers to enjoy later. Service has been better and more attentive in the past but it was busier than usual too. The actual decor and location is a bit dated but you probably wouldn't come here for the atmosphere. The mesir wat and gomen came beautifully wrapped in an injera, with a salad on the top and two very large rolled up injeras. This combo would be more than enough for two people to share. I ordered right as they opened and my order came fairly quickly (~40 mins), so I was really happy with that as well. The mesir wat was seasoned spectacularly! Just enough heat that pairs with the savory flavor. The gomen also was deliciously garlicky, all coming together so harmoniously with the sourness of the injera. I was worried that ordering it for delivery would affect the experience, but everything came nice and warm and it was so great to have this meal at home.
