Ambiance is amazing!! Everywhere you look there is something new! It's like and elegant tacky! The restaurant is smaller so peak times you'll probably wait a while to sit. The blue chairs are not that comfortable to sit in, you lean way to back to properly eat. Service was good but it is a bit pricy. Food was okay. Parking is terrible. I had a hard time finding a spot. I felt hopeful about Agave & Rye when I first tried them. Round about the fourth time I visited, as I entered, a couple sitting at the bar joked with the bartender about the kangaroo tacos. I had a very creepy feeling that they weren't making this up, so I picked up a menu. Sure enough. There it is--"The Big Thumper." I had overlooked it on my previous visits. I won't be back, though. Y'all this place is so adorable! Super bougie looking, the decor is an eclectic mix of contemporary / artsy / new age. I so enjoyed the atmosphere here and the food is amazing!! My coworker and I came for a quick lunch while working to set up for a conference at a nearby hotel. Such a great place to grab a quick bite or sit and stay for awhile. I don't drink, but found a bourbon peach punch that I decided I needed to try after a long day. Definitely the best start to any meal. My coworker grabbed a margarita- she tried mine and decided the peach drink was the winner. We shared an appetizer of chips and queso. The queso is made in house and it's flavor is super rich. It's thick and creamy and served with house made chips. The chips are so fresh, a bit thicker than I prefer but wonderful nonetheless. I got the #6 Alderman. It was filled with ancho grilled steak and street corn. All tacos are served in hard shells with a soft outer shell. Seriously, you need to try these tacos! Maybe I set my expectations too low, but this place blew me away. We were referred here by friends since it was their favorite taco ever, and it stood tall. I wish this place were closer to me in College Hill. What they do with tacos and alcohol is divine, and strong. When you walk in this joint, you just feel cooler. Like, this is where the magic happens. The tacos are actually pretty large with both a hard taco and a soft shell double decker style. The menu is easily laid out so that we vegetarians can find our nibbles. GUYS! They have delicious, well seasoned, carefully thought out vegetarian selections that are crunchy and soft and warm-not just lettuce, tomato, and go away. The Bang Bang is a crispy cauliflower masterpiece. I also tried the chips and queso-which is above average, but nothing to write home about. But that taco...yuuuuuuum. I will go back. This was my husband an I first time at agave & rye and it was less than we expected. First the waitress (who shall remain nameless) never introduced herself, and seemed to be very unhappy which then projected onto the service we received. Our drinks were decent and the taco was very greasy with large chunks of meat that was advertised as "pulled". The only good food items were the bourbon baked beans and egg roll. Very disappointing! Ordered food through DoorDash which we do regularly. No problem there. When the food arrived and unpacked, two of the five items ordered were missing. Credit to be issued, no problem. Now for the food. I ordered Birria Street Tacos, one of them had no meat but rather a huge chunk of fat in it. The meat in the other two was dry as if it had sat all day. My wife ate a couple bites of The Bang Bang and threw the rest away (nasty). Guarantee we won't order from here again. read more

Agave and Rye What happened to the idea that you could go into a restaurant and get decent service and enjoy a nice meal without getting the sense that you were "being inconvenient" to the server? The person, being paid to serve your meal. Two in our party went to Agave and Rye at 2:40pm on a Friday afternoon. In the entire restaurant there were four other tables with patrons. I do not consider that a busy time. Yet, we sat and were not once acknowledged by any one of the 5 on the wait staff (or the 2 cooks that would come halfway out of the kitchen with bags of takeout orders) for 10 minutes. This is not hard...NO ONE WAS REALLY IN THE PLACE!!! Finally, a server walked by and I asked her..."Hi, could we get some service?" "Sure, he'll be here in a bit. He is swamped." Our server then came over about 3 minutes later and put down 2 napkins..."Welcome friends! I will be back shortly!" Off he went. Funny...everyone wants a restaurant that is cool with good food, to succeed in Covington's burgeoning urban core. You know...something good that can compliment Braxton's crowds right around the corner. Well, this is not the place. The decor is black and white and it appears that the ONLY look allowed by the wait staff is black and white. It is one of those places where you get the vibe that a few cool people thought up this great idea, but no one with restaurant experience is involved running it. A Tequila and Bourbon Hall? Well, is it that or a restaurant? After the long service wait, My friend got the Bees Knees taco with the honey lime chicken. It was good, but we weren't really sure what Salsa Fresca meant. I got the Mole taco. It was passable. The avocado was not fried, but blackened. It was just like blackened pulp. I was thankful for the one tomato that came wirh I feel like this is one of those places that just wants to be COOL. Yes, they have inventive tacos that come double shelled. But the salsa is fair and there is not much else. Unless you consider Cotija cheese and blackstrap molasses and rattlesnake sauce the reason to eat a meal. Which is why people go there...once. Every taco is just a bit too pretensious. Save your dime and time and go to Frida 602 and see how it is done right. They have the staff to prove me right. Or, for all you Braxton patrons looking for a better way to enjoy a beer...stop over at Gutierrez Mexican Deli on the corner of 12th and Lee. I know, it is a hassle to go back when you are so close to Braxton. Trust me - get the chicken fajita or burrito to go, then take it to Braxton and eat it with the beer of your choice at a patio table in front. This is livin life!!!! Everything on the menu looks so good was hard to decide what to get but i settled on the The Crown Jewel Butter Poached Lobster, Grilled Portabella, Mac N Cheese, Crispy Onion The Cat's Meow Bourbon Shrimp, Andouille Sausage, Cheesy Grits, Crispy Red Bell Pepper my husband ordered the The Alderman Ancho Grilled Steak, Mexican Street Corn Salad, Cotija Cheese, Chile de Arbol Salsa The Plain Jane Ground Beef, Shredded Lettuce, Aged White Cheddar, Diced Tomato, Sour Cream And we ordered the Mexican Street Corn Salad. When walking into this place, it feels like walking into New Orleans mixed with Mexico, yet maintains the awesome atmosphere of this part of Covington. The atmosphere is artwork, from the walls to the tables to the music to the food, everything is a bold presentation. The music was R&B and hip, though the table next to mine didn't care for it. The only thing I would add would be jazz and Latin music. The service was great, and it's conveniently located in Covington. The tacos-This food is so good it makes you go comatose. You feel like you were given drugs, but it's really just the savory ness and awesome flavor of the food. They have duck/pork/beef/chicken/mahi mahi/ and many more. It's really an awesome and fun menu. I recommend this establishment for a meal, and walk next door for desert! read more

Want tacos or margaritas? This place has potential but there are certainly so many better options in the city. I'll break the review into two sections: Drinks: We actually had a really nice experience at Sugar Whiskey Sis next door. They had great drinks and were so knowledgeable and friendly! They are owned by the same people, which is why I am surprised by how bad the drinks at Agave & Rye were. We ordered a pitcher of spicy margaritas while waiting for our table and I can tell you that either their mix is terrible, or they gave us straight up limeade. It was so incredibly sweet and I could not taste any tequila in it whatsoever. It was also not spicy in the slightest. It was bright neon green. We brought it back up to the bartender and explained that we would rather have a homemade margarita than anything with the mix, and if he could please make it more spicy, and all he did was hand us back the pitcher with a handful of jalapenos in it. Still incredibly sweet. Still tasted like limeade. We chalked it up to a loss and ordered beers. Food: The food has such potential but is put together poorly. The flavor profiles were great and I really enjoyed all of the different options for tacos. But wow they were filled badly. They need to cut their food smaller if they want to put it in a taco. For example we got the shrimp and sausage taco, and while the flavors were tasty, there was only one shrimp and two pieces of sausage all attempted to be stuffed in a taco. It was incredibly hard to eat and the food ended up falling out for us to eat with a fork. Not bad, but not what they are advertising. The other tacos were tasty, but had the same problem. Please cut your food smaller if you want the pieces to go into a taco! The room is also super cramped. I felt like we were sitting on top of other tables. And wow what where organization goes to hell. When we gave our name, they completely forgot who we were or what we looked like, and wouldn't yell out the names, so we constantly had to go back and check on our name while other people around us got sat. All in all, not a good experience. Hopefully their tacos got better, but I don't believe there was any hope for the drinks. If you want good Mexican food, stick with Bakersfield or Mazunte! read more

I came here with some girlfriends for a celebratory dinner and we had a great meal! Agave & Rye is a seat-yourself place, and when we walked in there were no available tables- popular spot! We waited about 10 minutes or so and were able to snag a table when we spotted people leaving. Our waitress was very personable and gave us plenty of time to look over the menu before taking our order. We started out with guac & queso, along with margaritas of course. The guac was great! The house margarita was pretty standard, but there are a lot of different flavor combos to choose from- I went with jalapeño pineapple which was not too spicy- just enough "kick" to it. A&R's menu features many taco varieties! Most that you'd expect: chicken, beef, etc; but also one with kangaroo meat! I'm not a meat eater, but I can see someone ordering it just for the novelty factor. I chose two veggie tacos- the Mole which had fried avocado & Bang Bang with crispy cauliflower. They both had great flavor! What really makes A&R stand out is that the fillings are served in a hard shell with a soft tortilla wrapped around it- which really helps the filling stay together & gives each bite a nice crunch. I know going to a taco place you aren't looking for healthy options necessarily- but I was a little disappointed that the 3 veggie taco options all seemed to be fried or "crispy". read more

The Art Isn't Just On The Walls. Agave&Rye gave me a great first experience when I visited them a couple months back and every visit since has been a new flavor combo on their tacos as well as good service and atmosphere. I've visited at lunch and dinner times and I've always been greeted warmly and felt comfortable. The bartenders and servers both gave great service and were helpful with questions I had. If you'd like to taste some tacos with flavor and variety then definitely check out Agave&Rye. Oh and apparently you can get dessert served to you at your table now from the coffee/ice cream shop next door. What a disappointment. Came on a Saturday around 3PM for a late lunch/early dinner. Was not sure whether it is more a bar or a restaurant, but it was packed with patrons, so I had high hopes that this will be a great quick satisfying meal. WRONG! My SO and I seated ourselves and hungrily scanned the longish menu. They have so many tequillas and bourbons and the margs prices were very reasonable. But we came to eat and, per server's recommendations, ordered 3 tacos each. Despite the busy traffic, the food came within 15 min and the first impression was already chilling. Lots and lots tortilla, not much color or filling. The tacos really did not look appetizing, no limes, crema or cilantro, just a dull look of some wrinkled dark green jalapeno. Sad. Each taco comes in a shell wrapped in a soft tortilla. An overkill for a small amount of filling. By the size and texture of tortillas, I could swear these are store bought and not made in house. Cheap trick to make people stuff themselves with flour cake from a package. Most of the food was cold or room temperature at best. I had to leave all these layers of tortillas to be able to taste the filling. I ordered a side of slaw, in hopes for a pop of color and some fresh veggies, but got a bland mix of apples, white cabbage and mayo, no color, no taste, no fun, just a cry. The fried battered cod (The Snitch) was ok and covered with some yellow remoulade, but there was some green underseasoned mush in this taco that was frankly off putting. The Mole carried a promise of fried avocado with portobello/tomato tapenade, this was the worst taco I tried with chunks of cold hard acidic mushroom and no seasoning. Awwww. The Bees Knees wanted me to taste honey drizzled chicken with salsa and jalapeno. The sad green piece of pepper on top did not make a cut, the bland not seasoned stripes of luke warm chicken fell out of the taco as they were too big to stay in the multilayer tortilla they served it with. At this point, I lost any hope. These were the worst tacos I had. Too many cold tortilla layers, too little seasoning or sauces or salsa, no color, just a bunch of flavorless mess made by amaeteurs. It would be cruel to compare them to tacos from Bakersfield or Frida's, but they really have a lot to learn at Agave and Rye. Even TacoBell serves more balanced tacos. I feel genuinely sad that this beautifully restored space has such a sad flavorless kitchen. The interior is stunning and the bold colors and Dia de los Muertos artwork is awesome. The deep blue on the walls and a decorated bull's skull above the bar make a great impression and lure you inside on a promise to deliver something authentic, fun and delicious. And I got fooled. Perhaps drinks are better. But what they do to tacos is criminal and unforgiving. This is the ONLY food you serve, bring your A or at least B game Agave&Rye!! read more

Not a standard taco, in the worst way. Ingredients sound interesting but do not work together. Lack of salt and fresh vegetables. No limes on a side.  I had a brisket taco that had KETCHUP inside. Absolute NO GO. The kangaroo taco was odd, meat was chewy and buried under annoying pile of cherries and chunky cous cous.  Chicken taco was bland and flavorless. I am usually wary of fancy tacos. I have had too many disappointing experiences where the taco did not add up to the price, but this was a nice surprise! I am glad I was convinced to give Agave and Rye a try. I tried the Rooster (friend chicken and mac&cheese), and the chicken on it was so good that it almost felt like a waste to put it on a taco. Yet the crunch of a fresh corn shell and the creaminess of the Mac&cheese made it all worth while. I could have done with a pickle topping that was a bit more sour, but it's not a big enough deal to deduct a star. And I know I have more of a sour tooth than most people. The All Nighter (duck confit with fried rice) was also a solid choice. A good fusion of the delicious confit method of cooking combined with the rich Asian flavor from the hoisin sauce. The fried rice was also spot on. My companion declared that the creole inspired Cat's Meow was the best taco he had ever had, but I can't do shrimp so I can't say for sure. I did get to sample the Bee's Knees (honey lime chicken) and The Alderman (ancho grilled steak). Both were juicy and tender. I was really impressed. I think it would be hard to go wrong here. Another recommendation I have is for the corn fritters. Absolutely delicious! A shareable side plus two tacos would definitely be enough to fill up most people. With the combination of good food and good drinks, you can expect this place to be crowded on Friday and Saturday night. If you aren't into waiting, you may want to go another time. The wife and I stopped in for the taco's I'd heard about. I will tell you they didn't disappoint. Best tacos around that I've found. A great selection as well. We had the chips salsa and guacamole while waiting on our tacos. The guacamole is the best I've had outside of California. So was the salsa and queso. The tacos were absolutely banging. I'll ask the wife if she remembers the tacos names lol. I know mine had carne asada in it. The other honey grilled chicken and bacon. I loved both. The wife had one with braised short rib and the other the same as my carne asada one. We could only eat about 1/2 of each, they're huge tacos. We ordered a desert to go being we were stuffed. I ended up getting chips and salsa which were sub par and then I got tacos which were both fine but just nothing special. Not a place I would really recommend to anyone. Agave & Rye serves the best tacos we've ever consumed in our lives! The chips are homemade and delicious and the salsa was second to none. Their tacos are bigger than your average street taco and wrapped in a hard corn shell and a soft flour tortilla. We ordered the Whipper Snapper, the Swipe Right, and the Rooster tacos and they were excellent! Our personal favorite was the Swipe Right. Their menu is not super extensive but their bourbon and tequila menu is as long as your arm. The music selection was good and the inside has a really eclectic style.
