CJ started by asking us what we liked so we compiled a folder of photos of gardens around the neighborhood and the internet. She diplomatically explained why some of our "likes" were better choices than others (based upon available space, budget or sunlight), which helped us avoid some of the problems I'd had in the past with my plant choices! In the end CJ designed a garden that had the "vibe" of our favorite pics without necessarily using the same features. She presented a few alternative layout plans which included various hardscape and plant options, and we chose our favorite, then she came up with the irrigation and lighting plans. I especially appreciated that CJ has established excellent working relationships with a lot of subcontractors (hardscape, lighting, plant and irrigation specialists), so when she got multiple bids from each specialist we knew we could comfortably go with the lowest priced ones because we knew that she trusted their work. The savings right there probably paid for the design fee we paid, not to mention the peace of mind we got from knowing they were well vetted! The installation went very smoothly, and CJ met with the subcontractors to answer specific questions and oversaw the whole operation. We were impressed with how painless the whole process was, and most importantly, the end result was fantastic. It looked great initially, but now looking back we realize that the best was yet to come. The garden has grown in in a very manageable and delightful way and has only improved with age. I would highly recommend Root and Branch for your garden design plans!

We were able to collaborate on a vision and its execution exceeded my expectations - it's insanely beautiful and peaceful, day and night. The lush (yet drought tolerant) landscape using a stunning water feature as a focal point really changed the way we interact with and enjoy the yard. Gary took obvious care in curating individual plants. Over the course of the project we looked forward to seeing what he might show up with. He could've done the easy thing and get a truckful of commonly available plants, but there was particular care in identifying plants that fit our "arid tropical" theme while attracting birds and butterflies, and all the feature plants were beautiful specimens. We did go over budget more than we expected to; expect Gary to be a bit haphazard about keeping up on budget until the end, but be assured extra costs are generally defensible. The overall timeline for completing the work was longer than we would've thought but allowed us extra time to give input to the evolution of the yard design, so that really worked for us. The front yard refresh was fine but doesn't particularly stand out. The back yard - heaven.

This was a huge hit to our community because we had already fired the previous landscaping company that we used for 20 years.
