Unfortunately we had a very unpleasant experience with Al. My wife and I are in the process of buying a home and we contacted him to give us some ideas and an estimate on how to better hide and take the attention away from power lines in the back yard of the home. I called, Al and we had a very pleasant conversation, where I explained to him exactly what we needed. I asked if our address was too far, explaining that we lived in Inglewood and I told him that we were in the buying process. He was wonderful and said he would come and check it out. The day we scheduled him to come was also the day of our inspection. My wife and our realtor were there, but I was at work. When Al called I told him my wife would be right out to great him. Al's attitude changed immediately. It seemed that as soon as I said he would be dealing with my wife instead of me, that the nice man I spoke with was gone. Sure enough, he was extremely rude to my wife siting that he "only works in Santa Monica," that "he thought he would be dealing with her husband," and that "this wasn't for him." He waved his hands and eventually stormed out. Within those few minute he was dismissive, rude, and outwardly displayed his displeasure. In our home my wife and I have equal say in all decisions and this sadly became an obviously sexist situation. It was pretty hard to believe. Al's reviews are amazing, and his work looks wonderful. I am sure he is a master of his craft, but, at the very least, even if the home was too far, or the work wasn't for him, a better approach and attitude would have solicited a better review and recommendation. read more

Al rocks! He came out twice and busted his butt to remove trees and so a lot of trimming/pruning. Always great to work with and reasonable.

What a great and talented guy who can make your yard just shine. Originally hired Al to trim tree's then a lawn service after a dog had been living at a rental property and when he said he would do my regular gardening for me it took a minute to send a dismissal to my horrible gardener and grab Al which was my lucky day. Super nice guy with I think endless energy. I am watching him right now take apart my neighbors front yard that has just been left since she passed away and had gone berserk and he's done more in two hours than I could do in a day, he likes what he does. read more

We had been in our house for about a year and had an avocado tree that seemed to be a bit sick. We called Al to check it out. Not only did Al tell us how to care for our tree (for free) but we then asked him if he could redo our entire hardscape and landscape. Al is a unique individual with talent not found amongst most landscapers. If you are willing to let your creative juices flow and participate in the creation of a beautiful space then great things can happen. Since helping us redo our landscape to be a low maintenance and low water usage, Al keeps it maintained and beautiful. Think twice about using this guy! I wanted a couple of branches cut off of the palm tree on my patio. It's a super easy job because all you have to do is clip them from my upstairs balcony!! I have had it done twice that way. Al said he can do it for $75.00 (which is what I paid the two times before). I ask him if he could please come early on Saturday morning because I am having my carpets cleaned. He says he doesn't start early, but will come at 10:00. He calls me at 10:25 to tell me that he is on he way, but doesn't have a clipper to do the palm tree. I hate false advertising and people who waste my time!!! read more

I found Al's advertisement online and saw that he was in my neighborhood. His reviews looked good. I called him regarding a lawn sprinkler system for my front yard. After discussing my general needs, I decided to have Al help me plant a garden on 1/3 of my lawn and install a sprinkler system for the entire yard. He handled it without any problems. The project did involve a lot work. I found Al's cost reasonable and he has a lot passion for his work. We have know each other about a month and I was able to call him yesterday to plant another plant and check the sprinkler system. Great arborist. I was nervous about cutting a pepper tree I planted years ago, but it was really overgrown. I wanted someone that could artistically trim the tree to a shape that would grow properly. I actually found the owner, Al Gwilliam, through the International Society of Arboriculture, of which Mr. Gwilliam is a member. I needed to consult with an arborist about a very old olive tree and a Tipu tree that I believed were being improperly trimmed over the years by the various tree trimmers I had hired. I needed the advice of someone who understood the unique requirements for tree care as it pertains to each tree. So I had a couple of arborists look at the trees, including Al. Aside from his folksy, down-to-earth manner, I appreciated Al's thorough explanation on how he would handle each tree; and because Al is a licensed landscaper who also does his own tree trimming, I had the best of both worlds. The results are outstanding. I have an olive tree that now looks picturesque enough to be on a bottle of olive oil, and a Tipu with a canopy that will be properly maintained. read more
