Our front yard was a bland mixture of lawn and a hodgepodge of plants I had sprinkled around over the years, so the transformation into a gorgeous and sustainable garden was truly remarkable. CJ started by asking us what we liked so we compiled a folder of photos of gardens around the neighborhood and the internet. She diplomatically explained why some of our "likes" were better choices than others (based upon available space, budget or sunlight), which helped us avoid some of the problems I'd had in the past with my plant choices! In the end CJ designed a garden that had the "vibe" of our favorite pics without necessarily using the same features. She presented a few alternative layout plans which included various hardscape and plant options, and we chose our favorite, then she came up with the irrigation and lighting plans. I especially appreciated that CJ has established excellent working relationships with a lot of subcontractors (hardscape, lighting, plant and irrigation specialists), so when she got multiple bids from each specialist we knew we could comfortably go with the lowest priced ones because we knew that she trusted their work. The savings right there probably paid for the design fee we paid, not to mention the peace of mind we got from knowing they were well vetted! The installation went very smoothly, and CJ met with the subcontractors to answer specific questions and oversaw the whole operation. We were impressed with how painless the whole process was, and most importantly, the end result was fantastic. It looked great initially, but now looking back we realize that the best was yet to come. The garden has grown in in a very manageable and delightful way and has only improved with age. Avoid. If they're the only ones who are readily available - there's a reason for it. Their website claims they "work closely with our clients to understand all of their needs and desires, then create a comprehensive plan to make the vision a reality" and yet, it was the complete opposite with my family in terms of ignoring what we wanted and then being very unprofessional in dealing with it. We contacted them about helping us with a drought resistant design plan for a lawn conversion. They met with us to explain it was $600 in exchange for a design plan which covers things that we discussed. We talked about what we wanted in terms of paths, water retention, plants, and plant colors. I asked if they would check in to confirm the plan before sending it and they said sure. I even sent them an email referencing our discussion, and when I didn't get the plan back on time, I emailed them to check in. Also, during this time, I realized that although they said they had spent an hour reading LADWP's website (which they apparently wanted me to pay for), they somehow missed the FAQ on what areas can be converted so I included an update about that. I was so excited when they sent me the plan, and I was shocked when I saw it ignored most of what we talked about. It didn't have the paths we talked about, the water retention feature was what I did NOT want, they ignored plants I wanted/already had, and the colors weren't what we discussed. And, on top of being so wrong, they told me the plan was ready to submit to the city! I called them and the call was ended twice without voicemail, so I sent an email outlining my concerns and asking to talk. Their response was unprofessional and convinced me working with them more would be a waste of time. They replied by saying they missed my email with my "changes" - these weren't changes, and, it looked like they did read my email since they addressed one thing in it. When I pointed out these weren't changes, they replied that I must've thought the contract was for more than what it was (!), but they were willing to change the design as a "courtesy." I replied the deal was for a usable plan that covered what we discussed. They haven't upheld their end of the deal and I didn't want to waste any more of anyone's time on this. I thought this settled the issue since they didn't respond and blocked me so I don't even have access to their plan. Instead, though, they just sent me a past due invoice. Do yourself a favor and AVOID them. Edited to respond to their reply: I take it as a strange compliment (and very typical of our communications) that you want to pass off my amateur, personally drawn plan as your own. read more

We found Root & Branch after a friend's referral whom I contacted after disappointing responses from a couple of other landscaping companies. CJ and Christina and their crew were amazing from the beginning. CJ was very candid, detail oriented, asked great questions and opened our eyes to possibilities. For example, she noted things like increasing privacy in the backyard by tree planting. She knew the importance of low maintaince as time is something most of us don't have if you are working and raising a young family. She also was savvy about water conservation in lawn care. Christina designed a terrific plan that combined the needs for a desire for garden/plant boxes, keeping the dog happy but in a secured area and most important, wonderful play area for the little ones. CJ was terrific at keeping us updated, true to her quote and actually the team finished the work on time despite the turbulent rivers and weather we experienced. After 27 years living in a home on a very small lot, we recently moved into a home with a sizable front yard. Landscaping a home with considerably more room than we have ever had was an exciting opportunity.
