I was a successful artist in my twenties, but life took over, and my art came to a screeching halt. I raised a family, had a busy life and a few careers, retired, and found myself living in San Jose. I thought I would take an art class to fill the time. This is how I wound up at the Art School of SF Bay. The first classes I took were watercolor and portraits, which I enjoyed, though I struggled to walk through the front door. I had no confidence; I was my own worst critic; I had a fear of making bad art; and when I looked around, everyone was so talented, most of them young enough to be my grandchild. My life changed when I found myself in Andrew Kim's Inking class. His upbeat, positive attitude gave every student a can-do attitude, including me, which helped me to relax. Andrew knew everything about art, from perspective and portraits to charcoal, ink, digital, manga, and more. Andrew is a doer of all art. He can do anything. His teaching style creates an atmosphere of learning; he will teach you how to do it; he will not do it for you. He made art fun. He reminds me of my son, who is a conductor. My son can hear a flat note in a room full of top-notch musicians. Just like Andrew, with his eagle eye, he will help you improve whatever project you are working on just by looking at it. Andrew promotes and encourages his students to be a community. He created a Discourse where everyone can interact with fellow students, get advice, build friendships outside of class, meet up for sketching and socializing, just be artists, and share their ideas and dreams. Having a support system is crucial. He also makes it easy to schedule make-ups and is a great communicator. Andrew makes sure everyone's artistic needs are met because he cares about his students. I continued with Inking and also added Open Studio, where I could work on my own projects. That is when my life changed. I began sketching dog portraits, posted them on my social media, and before I knew it, I had three commissions. It was absolutely shocking! I accepted the commissions, and ever since then, I have been off and running. I owe and credit all my success to Andrew and Art School of SF Bay. This would never have happened without him at my side. When people ask me what I do, I proudly say, "I am a commissioned pet portrait artist." I'm very proud of this accomplishment, something I would never dream of happening. Don't hesitate to contact Art School of SF Bay if you are interested in art. She assured everyone that our paintings were going to turn out great no matter our skills and as long as we didn't give up and just had fun. All the materials were set out and ready for us to use. Emily was a fabulous host and everything was well organized. The location, Cooper-Garrod Estate Vineyards in Saratoga, is a perfect place to relax and paint. Art Hub Academy is extremely professional and accommodating. I registered my child for the Matiz…read moreclass online on July 21 (a Friday). Though there was a schedule that listed Matiz class 9:45 am to 10:45 am on Saturdays, there was no information regarding start and end date, so I was under the impression it was on a rolling admission, or that I would receive an email with directions. I did not receive an email with instructions, thus I emailed Art Hub Academy asking whether or not I should show up the next day (Saturday) for the class. Jose Luis emailed me back and let me know that all classes start at the beginning of the month, however he was super accommodating and allowed my son to come in the next day, all due to MY confusion! I apologized for the inconvenience and thanked him for his flexibility and for being so thoughtful. We showed up to the class the next morning, and Ms. Vivian was there. I am extremely impressed with how patient she is. She provided an all inclusive classroom environment that made my son feel comfortable. So much so, that he asked if I could leave because all of the other parents were not present. Usually he does not like to be alone in new environments until he warms up, but he wanted to be alone within 10 minutes of the class! The children were already working on a clay project from the week prior, and Ms. Vivian accommodated all of the children. I watched her navigate the class professionally with an enthusiastic attitude and friendly demeanor. She was well organized and made sure to give every child attention, as well as one-on-one attention. She explained tasks well to the children, and encouraged the children to socialize. She was gentle yet firm in her teaching approach. I got the vibe that Ms. Vivian loves what she does and it truly shows through her actions. When the class was over, I walked back in to pick my child up. I asked her how my child did. It went well, he enjoyed it all while having fun and learning art concepts. I was surprised at how attentive she proved to be. In addition to telling me how the class went, she picked up on things that I was already aware of, but did not expect others to pick up on during a one hour class. For example, she picked up on the fact that my son needs a lot of hands-on instruction and repetition. She even went as far as to ask how she could better help my son. Words can not explain how good Ms. Vivian's attention to detail made me feel as a parent. I am truly appreciative of the professional and patient demeanor exhibited by this facility. I am really happy with the choice I made to bring my child here. My son would not stop talking about how fun the class was, and walking me through the process of "wiring" for his clay model. It has only been one class and I can see the impact that this establishment has made on my child's self-confidence. The developmental gains that my son (and I'm sure other children) are making from this establishment are substantial. First we chose our scents and blended color and scents into our two candles and then from our leftover we got to make a special mini candle combining all of our candle wax! The color came out cute for the combo one! Then we glued on pretty pressed flowers into the glass to hold our candles!! It was so fun and a great place to yap away and craft together!
