I discovered the Historic Irons Manor Fountain on a recent visit to North Miami. It was built in 1925 out of limestone and it is the City of Miami's oldest public art. The fountain is actually older than the incorporation date of the City of North Miami. The Irons Manor Fountain stands at the entrance of the Iron Manors subdivision platted in 1926 by developer V. Earl Irons. who followed the principals of design of the then popular City Beautiful movement. The city restored the fountain and had a ribbon cutting ceremony in May of 2019. They added paved walkways, benches, and landscaping around the fountain to create a park setting. I loved discovering this cool piece of Miami history that over 20,000 cars pass by every day.

Make the time and go check out the two new solo shows that just opened - 'The Garden' by Hiba Schahbaz and 'Field of Dreams' by Diana Eusebio - they are spectacular! One of the employees, perhaps the manager, described each of the 3 current exhibit. Entrance fee is free for Bank of America customers the first full weekend of the month. I was able to find free and convenient street parking on NE 8th Avenue. The 3 current exhibits are Leigh Gordon, Kanaval a chronology of Haiti's carnival; Dider William and the Victory Garden, which was the reason for my visit. The Victory Garden, in the museum's Paradise Courtyard, is an inspiration to find solutions to food scarcity. You are given a paper bag and encouraged to ship some herbs. Basil, culantro, tomatoes and oregano were just a few plants in the garden. Current hours, according to their website are Mon & Tue, closed; Wed. 12-7; Thur. - Sun. 12-5. Admission is $10 for adults, free for children under 12, veterans and North Miami employees and residents. I would plan on spending 1 -2 hours at the museum. I recommend a visit to MOCA

Milton & Associates, a Miami real estate development company since 1963. Mariposas stands in front of the Milton Tower, a 14-story office building near NE 163rd Street and Collins Avenue. This artwork is part of Sunny Isles Beach's Cultural Master Plan, which was created in 2017 to bring more art to the city. Developers who apply for building permits of any size in Sunny Isles Beach are required to contribute an art piece valued at least $500,000. Mariposas was created by Spanish artist Manolo Valdés known for his style that combines art with history. Valdés has been featured in many museums and galleries. His pieces are displayed in Valencia, Spain; Place Vendome, Paris; Berkeley Square, London; Taipei, Taiwan and Dubai and now in Sunny Isles Beaches. Valdés is an internationally known artist and his work is supposed to represent multiculturalism in the city. I was really drawn the playfulness of this piece. It is very eye catching and fun to photograph at different angles.

This Ancient Spanish Monastery located in North Miami is an enclave for European architecture and…read morehistory. Built in Spain in 1133, the cloisters and outbuildings were purchased by William Randolph Hearst in 1925 with plans to bring them to the United States. Taken apart stone by stone, it was packed in 11,000 wooden crates. In 1952, two Miami businessmen purchased the Monastery with plans to turn it into a tourist attraction. Time magazine called it "the biggest jigsaw puzzle in history," completed in 1953 and $20 million dollars. Sold to Robert Pentland Jr. in 1964, he in turn gave it to the Bishop of Florida. It is currently owned by the Episcopal Diocese of Southeast Florida. There is a museum with historic Spanish artifacts. While the church is at its core, the monastery surrounded by beautiful gardens and courtyard is an oasis of peace and serenity. A great place for special events. A wedding was being set up while we were there on a Sunday. Open 10-4 Monday to Friday and varies on weekends depending on events. Entrance fee is $10.

Valdés inspiration came from a chance encounter with butterflies in New York. "One day, while strolling in Central Park, I saw a group of butterflies that had landed on top of a sculpture and the idea of the headpiece was born." There is a larger version of this sculpture in Sunny Isles called Mariposas. I love the whimsical nature of this piece. I am also a fan of Valdés Infanta Margarita statues. Butterflies is dressed up extra special this week in celebration of the floral art exhibition Fleurs De Villes Voyage, on display at the nearby Bal Harbour Shops. Large butterflies covered in pink and white flowers from Blake Roses Floral Designs have been added to Valdés sculpture. You can see the added display of flowers until March 12th.
