This company has been a no show twice. No communication, no updates. I'm on day 4 of my tenants with no AC and I can't get them to respond. There is no urgency on their part. Very hard to get them to show up. Many times they promise, but those promises are broken every time.

Initially, all seemed well because they were recommended by a friend. My AC ducts needed to be replaced due to animal damage. A young man showed up and went up in the attic for a few minutes to check out the damage. He told me that he would recommend replacing the whole duct work due to animal damage. He told me to call and speak with Sam. I later called or received a call from Sam. I got a verbal quote, from Sam for $1800.00. I decided to have them do it and asked that they also check AC/Furnace to make sure it worked. After work was "completed" on ducts the young man was about to leave and I had to remind him to give the system a check to make sure it functioned. He got the furnace going but then came back and told me that he had to manually start it because it would not start on it's own. He said that the blower was not working and likely the furnace and perhaps the whole unit would have to be replaced due to damage from animal urine and feces. He asked that I call Sam to get a quote on the cost. I later called Sam and was quoted nearly 6K for a full unit replacement. I was incredulous. The system had been working fine less than a year earlier. I later got a call from Sam and was told that he had over quoted me. It would only cost me nearly 5K instead of 6K. He also indicated that he could also see if he could find a slightly "used" unit that could potentially cost less to replace. After talking it over with my girlfriend, we decided to get a second opinion from the HVAC company that I had used in the past and that had originally installed the unit over 10 years ago. Long story short, it's a good thing that we got a second opinion because the problem was fixed for less than $200 by All Year Heating and Cooling! I was told by All Year that there was nothing wrong with the system. That perhaps the previous AC tech was not very experienced or forgot to flip on the power override switch. That got me thinking that maybe I should check this business licensing credentials with Texas Dept of Licensing and Regulation, which coincidentally, is where I work! Turns out the guy that did the work did not hold an AC tech license, although he has since gotten one. I climbed up in the attic to do some other work and noticed that the ducts had not been sealed. One even had damage where it connected to the plenum and air was escaping. It was a rushed, shoddy, inadequate, and unacceptable job that was done. I kept getting calls from the office to see if I had decided to replace the system. I refused to answer because I was upset. I decided to email instead so that I would have a written account of our discussion. When I emailed and brought up the issues, I was rebuked by Sam for not calling to speak to him on the phone. I was also criticized for doing research on the internet and calling them out on the problems. Regarding the unit replacement, he said that All Year was basically wrong and that my unit would eventually go out. He said that they make their money from doing repairs. Regarding the ducts, he said that they should have been sealed and initially offered to have his guy come back to complete the job. When it became apparent that I had determined that his guy (son) did not have a license when he did the work, he offered to refund my money. He also tried to tell me that he had Face Timed with his son to verify the problems. That is not acceptable because he would not have been able to see firsthand what the problems were to make a correct diagnosis. He ended up refunding $900 back to my card when he told me via email that he would refund the whole amount. He also made what I interpreted as a veiled threat when he informed me that he had spoken to some hunting buddies about this and he thought I had broken some protocols myself. I have all this in my email. Lesson learned. Do your homework people. Find a reputable company. We are new to the area and just purchased a home here last week. Neither of our ac units were functioning properly, so we chose Affordable based on Yelp reviews. Sam was able to come within a couple of hours, just as he said he would. He did a thorough inspection of both units, explained the problems and our repair options, and answered all of our questions. He had our upstairs unit working in no time, we're considering our options with the downstairs unit as it's very old, we'll likely replace it once we get settled. I just bought a new condo (well new to me, but old in age) let the fun with contractors begin! The electrician I had out recommended Affordable A/C so I gave them a ring and made an appointment with Sam to come out and have a look. The tech called me in the morning to confirm a time and get directions. He showed up exactly on time, and went right to work. There was a strange hole next to the ceiling A/C unit, which he explained was a very bad job at a drain hole for the secondary drain pipe. He went to the truck got some pipe and fixed it all nice and pretty. He thoroughly checked everything, (checked the freon levels, blew out the drain lines and checked the coils) and explained everything he did. I was completely happy with his work. I hope all my upcoming experiences are the same. read more

My A/C went out about a month ago on Friday afternoon when I got home from work. I was set to leave on a trip the next morning at 5am and didn't know what to do. Several people recommended another company - who I called immediately and they came out within the hour. Two guys looked at the unit and came to tell me that it was the original unit and there was "a lot" wrong with it and it should/needed to be replaced. Quoted me $4,200-$5,000. I had them scheduled for the next week out of desperation. While I was out of town I looked for other businesses to get another opinion. Emailed Affordable A/C (since I was out of town) and heard back from Sam within a few hours. He said he would stop by and take a look and see what he thought. He did that and emailed back that he couldn't find anything wrong. He said he wanted to come back when he could take a look inside. He sent his guys out again and had the unit turned on. He said he didn't do anything and mentioned it could have overheated, or maybe an ant had gotten in the connectors. happens. Its been a month now and the unit is still going fine. I recommend this company because they seem to be very honest and did not immediately advise me to replace it. Saved me thousands of dollars and got me up and running. read more

Due to the nearby fires, our power went out. When it came back on, we had a power surge and our A/C had no power. I found Affordable on the BBB website. I left an e mail. Much to my surprise, Sam wrote back and due to the fires, he was too busy to come out right away, but he offered for us to call and he would walk us through the diagnostic process. He was extremely nice over the phone and VERY helpful! He would give us instructions and we would call him back (we have a split system) with what we found. We called him numerous times with our results and no matter how many times we called, he was very helpful and kind. We FINALLY found it was a $9 part that we needed. He saved us from a $70 service call before 5 and a $160 service call after 5 from another provider that we had used before. We are currently housing another family from the Tahitian fires, so we were really needing an A/C. I will be giving ALL of my business from now on to Affordable and I will be recommending them to ALL my friends and co-workers that are living in the Bastrop area! We area indebted to them ... I had an issue with my AC unit here in Bastrop, TX. The unit wasn't blowing any cool air, and it's possible it wasn't blowing at all...just making noise. my home warranty company contacted their vendors and couldn't get anyone out until the following day (in the late afternoon). i was informed i could find my own vendor and they would reimburse me. i came to the BBB website and found AC/Heating vendors in my city. i contacted affordable A/C & Heating after going through the other vendors. i got sam houghton on the phone (awesome guy!). i explained to him my problem, and he told me right away that he's experienced problems with my home warranty company in the past. i immediately paniced because i thought he wasn't going to come to diagnose my problem and i'd have to wait until my home warranty company sent one the following day. however, despite his unpleasant experiences with my home warranty company in the past understanding my emergency dilemma he came to my home before he headed out to georgetown on another call. he got to my house in less than 15 mins. he diagnosed our problem before even knocking on the door (we have an outside unit and i informed him of our symptoms over the phone before he headed over), he informed me of how much it would cost, and said lets get them on the line so i can talk to them. after speaking with my home warranty company, which went very smoothly (thank God!) he was done with the repairs in far less than 30 mins. sam houghton is an awesome service provider! he had every excuse in the world to not take my service call (he was on his way to georgetown, he's had bad experiences, etc), but he came through and resolve my issue with a smile. he was very understand, humble, and straight to work. kudos to sam houghton and the Affordable A/C & Heating organization. i'd use you guys again in a heartbeat! read more

The best experience I have had with home repair services. I have been in the middle of a home remodel for the last few months, and needed help with my AC. Sam answered the phone on the second ring and listened intently to my problem. Instead of first scheduling and costing me money, he suggested a few troubleshooting options that I performed myself. When that didn't work, I called him back and he had a competent worker out the next day. The worker showed up on the time promised, and was able to diagnose my system that hadn't run in over a year and had it pumping cold air within 15 minutes. The best part, when it came time to pay the bill, he gave me an amazing price that was a fraction of the quotes I was provided by competitors because his crew was able to repair with minimal time and materials.
