Don't book insurance through Aer Lingus / Allianz! Aer Lingus recently automatically charged my wife and me 14.72 GBPs (~$20) for travel insurance for a flight from London Heathrow to Dublin Ireland. Allianz subsequently sent us a travel policy (written through Allianz UK) providing a Plan number, amount paid and coverage details.
After having a covered health related issue, we had to cancel our trip. So, we filed a claim for the refundable cost of the tickets (about $250) with Allianz. Much to our surprise, our claim was denied by Allianz (and subsequently by Aer Lingus when we filed a complaint with them) because we weren't UK citizens!
Aer Lingus knew that we were US citizens when we booked our tickets. Aer Lingus gladly automatically charged us for travel insurance as a part of the ticket transaction. Both the Aer Lingus receipt and the Allianz letter and policy indicated on their face that we had insurance for the flight. Aer Lingus was the one who booked through their partner Allianz UK, instead of say Allianz US. So, given all that, why do they get to deny us coverage? Because it's likely a scam! Over the years, I wonder how much money they have fraudulently scammed from non - UK passengers in this manner?
Neither entity has even had the decency to offer to refund the 15 GBP they charged us for coverage that was never valid in the first place!!!!! Oh, by the way, we also had to cancel our Carnival UK cruise. AON (who Carnival uses) refunded our entire cruise fare within three business days! So, it makes a difference who you do business with!!!!! Our recommendation, think twice before doing business with Aer Lingus or Allianz. read more
