I am writing this review concerning the Cumaru deck boards I recently installed. Initially, I was extremely impressed. For the first few months after installation, the boards were everything I had hoped for--beautiful, durable-looking, and they gave my deck a fantastic appearance. However, my positive experience was short-lived. We recently had a few days of typical California rain, and I was shocked to find that several of the boards have become significantly deformed and bent. This warping is highly noticeable and has severely compromised the look and, I suspect, the long-term structural integrity of the deck. I purchased Cumaru specifically for its reputation as a hard, dimensionally stable tropical hardwood. To have this kind of warping happen after only a few days of standard rain is deeply disappointing and makes me question the quality control of the specific batch of lumber or perhaps the material's suitability for an environment with even moderate moisture. I truly hope this is an isolated incident with the boards I received. But based on my experience, I would caution future buyers to carefully consider the potential for moisture-related deformation when using these Cumaru deck boards. read more

First they told me the delivery truck didn't fit on my street (with a cul de sac at the end with a 74 foot width). They then said they'd take care of bringing it to me through another company, and would call with delivery times. No one called they came when I was on vacation and dumped it in my driveway (they do not bring wood into the house). Luckily my handyman was there and brought it in for me. They left a huge immovable pallet in my driveway and said they'd c come get it returned to them, but for a fee which I should not have to pay. I can't move it and my condo board upset. DONT USE THIS COMPANY. The prices are lower because of this nonsense. read more

This entire process has been a disaster. I ordered 200 square feet of 1+ plus Cumaru tongue and groove decking for a covered balcony. They came in 12' and 8' sections. The wood itself is very pretty. That's where it all goes downhill. I live in a rural area. The T-Force driver refused to drive down my driveway to the house. I had to hand unload the boards from the truck into the back of my pick-up, then unload them again at the house. I stored the boards for 3 days across some 2x4's. The 8' boards twisted, cupped, and warped. In contacting Advantage Lumber, they told me I stacked them wrong. Give me a break. Properly dried boards should not warp like this. There is wood on the Titanic that is straighter than this. Next, the tongue and groove milling has no clearance and creates an interference fit. This is fine if you are engaging a 1 foot section of board. Try engaging a 12' long section of a tongue and groove board that looks like a potato chip. It is impossible to get this to work. I had to manually open up the grooves on each board to even have a chance of getting these engaged. What should have taken a few hours to install took me over a week. Now the floor is very uneven with boards all at different heights. It looks like crap for wood that is 3X the cost of PT. After sealing with IPE oil, the wood itself is pretty. However, don't wear rubber soled shoes on this. I've got black marks all over it. Next, let's talk about splinters. DO NOT, run your hand over a board. These aren't your typical "ouch" splinters. These will make you speak in tongues and question your existence in the universe. read more

I was in the market to build a deck and called in to this place the sales staff was very helpful, spoke with a man then a woman both In California (since that's what I asked for) and they were both equally helpful and easy to talk to and honest. This is my second purchase of IPE deck tiles. While I do believe they have a good product, the customer service has been severely lacking. I ordered 140 deck tiles, and upon the delivery truck opening it's rear hatch, you could see the vast majority of them having come loose from their packaging and jostling around the entire time during transport. In addition to several tiles being completely unusable, many of them were scratched. I took pictures of the tiles being all over the back of the truck, as well as a few more that showed even more damage. When I signed for the delivery, I indicated that there were many tiles with issues. Upon sending the photos to Advantage Lumber and explaining the situation, they wanted even more pics. Normally I would accommodate, but I had already stacked the tiles neatly and was awaiting my contractor installation. I was not asking for anything more than replacement tiles to be sent in a timely manner so that I could move forward with my project. I was more than willing to send the damaged tiles back. The representative kept insisting that additional photos were needed, despite the pics showing at least 60 tiles thrown all over the back of the delivery vehicle. I kept pressing, indicating that I did not have a lot of time prior to install, and was not offered anything other than send more pics or to sand away the scratches. So basically I was being asked to invest more time, money, and effort to repair damage I played 0 part in causing. When I asked to speak to a manager/supervisor, I had to make multiple requests. When someone finally got back to me, I immediately returned their call and left a message, only to never hear from them again. So here I am, a month later, having spent almost 6K on tiles, and I still have more than a dozen tiles with deep scratches and/or severe chips. I can't get a call back or receive any type of replacement tile unless I unstack all of the tiles, find the tiles that are the most damaged send updated pics, get approval for replacement, send back the damaged tiles, and then, and only then, will I get new tiles. By the time that all happens, my contractor will be long gone. read more

Worst customer service ever! After attempting to place an order on line and having the web page block placement of the order on the basis of the credit card charge being rejected, I called the bank, and they assured me there was no such rejection. Called on the phone, representative said he would enter the order manually. Next day, I checked the credit card on line, and no charge had been entered. Called Advantage again, a different rep answered, I explained, he said the card rejected, would re-enter the order. Next day, another rejection, called again, same routine. Got an invoice via email. That was over two weeks ago, I called today to ask where my shipment was, and they said the card had rejected, claimed they had called me and left me a message (no such message was received). BTW: I have since made many larges charges on the same card via other vendors with no trouble at all. read more

I am a small DIY homeowner and wanted a smaller order of IPE deckwood. I thought I would try a second time to buy there, so I called and their policy has not changed. You are not allowed to go thru and select pieces from their inventory. Most woodworkers and carpenters who care about the appearance of any given project insist on selecting out the nicer looking pieces that are straight or even have nice grain patterns. Lucky for me I found "Brazilian lumber" over in Gardena. They have beautiful wood and will allow you to select out the pieces you want. I researched this company before my purchase and was comfortable with my purchase. I spent in the thousands, was told that my product would ship in 10 -14 days. I waited 14 business days. Having received no communication, I called them. They told me it would be 2 weeks before they got a shipment to begin fashioning my order. They would ship 10-14 days after that. They are the busiest they have ever been was their excuse. My problem is they should have called me when they realized it would be that long. They were fine to charge my card though. read more

Only to find out they will not authorize the delivery driver to use the liftgate to offload the materials. It has to be offloaded BY THE CUSTOMER! I'll say that again ..... BY THE CUSTOMER!! Please read the fine print with this company. They set back customer service 25 years. I needed to be suspicious when the terms of sale is the longest page on their website in 6 pt font. These guys are interested in the sale and it's your problem from there. Their catch phrase for almost any question that arises, "Well, if you read the term of sale..." A week later I called to place the order and encountered an INCREDIBLY rude salesperson (I wish I would have gotten his name) that yelled at me for asking questions about availability and told me "I should have known better" about lumber availability.
