I recently took a class at this location. It was about using epoxy to make "rivers" in wood slabs. Although the class was a bit pricey at $375 it turned out to be a fair value since a piece of 2ft by 3ft premium wood was included as well as all of the supplies and tools needed to complete the project. The staff was knowledgeable and very friendly and I would not hesitate to take another class there. The showroom was clean and bright and many examples of this type of work was on display. The shop area was also very clean and orderly. Working with wooden slabs it's a very expensive Hobby but it offers one the opportunity to be very creative so I personally look forward to making more tables and other pieces of art using this technique. And I will continue to shop here due to the friendly environment. You might want to give it a try. read more

A miserable experience and it ain't over yet. I ordered my lumber on April 20th and I'm still waiting for it in Annapolis on May 6th, over two weeks later, after it first went AWOL in Maine--which I learned about from the lady who got it and gave me a call--and now it's AWOL in Baltimore. When I texted the freight company's customer care man this morning the query, "Any word?", his reply was "Zero". The Advantage Lumber salesman was the strongest link in this weak chain, but the product cut loose at the weakest link, which nobody seems to be able to trace. I have gotten unintelligible voicemails from their freighter with a general phone number and labyrinthine phone options, and apologetical messages, but no lumber. Much time wasted, much frustration, and no lumber. My contractor has been waiting on this job for over two weeks, and he waited on his cell phone all Friday during the "10am to 6pm" delivery window, on the day his grandson was born, as luck would have it, but no lumber. And no word since: "Zero", was the customer care man's one word about it. After much patience I write him, "Surely you will unload the lumber for all my troubles, since I can't ask my contractor to spend another day minding his phone rather than his new grandson," and the customer care rep says, "Union rules don't allow it." Are there any rules about timely delivery of product, or accountability for missing product, or compensation for loss of income due to delayed delivery? I really regret not buying local two weeks ago. This is not worth my savings buying on the internet. It was penny wise and pound foolish for me to go with Advantage Lumber. I won't pun on the disadvantages. read more

Great product, which looks awesome when installed, but customer service and especially quality control is not up to par. I purchased deck tiles to cover my 300 sqft patio and every single one of the end pieces was poorly treated with end cut sealant, a wax, that spilled all over, sometimes as much as two inches into the wood. Highly visible and the only thing they could do is suggest that I sand it off. IPE wood is extremely hard and sanding wax is a non-starter proposition. Even after oiling the wood, it is still visible. Poor quality control. Many of the tiles had flaws like split sides or you could see the planer ending on a different thickness. When I complained about this by chatting with an online agent, he cut me off rudely in the middle of the conversation, obviously didn't want to deal with a complaint. Also no response to my request for a courtesy discount. They use an extremely unreliable and borderline incompetent shipping company, which canceled on me three times, forcing me to delay my project twice. Not something a professional wants to experience! When it finally arrived, I had to help unload it and they used a pallet for the 2000 pound shipment that was too low for a dolly, hence had been propped up with soft wood by to accommodate a dolly. The pallet was all broken up (probably from loading it three times) and we had to cut the ends off with a saw to fit it onto the lift gate. It took 45 minutes to unload and I was sweat drenched when it was done! I don't mind helping, but this is not something the customer should be forced to do. Some may say this is out of control of the vendor, but it is not, they could use a better shipping company. read more

Buyer beware!!! We chose IPE as we were told it was the strongest and most durable wood. When we received the shipment of IPE the salesperson told us to inspect it, the shipping company told us to forget is and dropped it off. The lumber was riddled with issues, strap marks, wood filler, water marks on both sides, splits, two tone wood colors in the middle of the boards and more. We placed the wood in a covered area that was well ventilated so we could sand it and seal it with oil. What they told us we must do. Once we got done with that process, we started to lay the material. We were never told to lay it within 7 days of receipt. Who the heck can prep the material and get it down in 7 days? We were never told to not do tongue and groove on our deck. They told us when we called to dispute this, that we had to lay tongue and groove under a covered area. What, the strongest wood in the world has to be covered? That would have been nice to know considering we told the salesperson where we were installing it. We installed it a couple months later and it immediately started to warp and buckle. When we called Advantage, there was nothing but excuses on why the product wasn't working. Their solution was to sell us more with the largest discount, but that was the best of their resolution. Here's a thought, how about you send us more of what we should have been sold and make sure its not imperfect and ready to install. Maybe then we can meet your 7 day issue policy (which we were never told about). Horrible company with horrible customer service and product warranty. Oh, what am I saying, there is not warranty. read more

I was EXTREMELY disappointed by the inferior service received by Advantage. Between two orders, we had over $13k of wood delivered, and although the deck is absolutely beautiful, about 20% of the boards were damaged during transit (and cans of the coating received EMPTY) and it took over 6 weeks to get the order corrected and reshipped. In the meantime, I had a ripped up backyard as we awaited the delivery of the replacement wood. No phone calls back, no emails returned, I had to harass them on a daily basis to get the order completed. Bummer because the wood is so amazing. read more

I decided to build a deck off our master bedroom (roughly 12' x 12'). I wanted to use the best wood as this deck will see some serious sun exposure (west exposure in Southern California). I decided on IPE, and the process began. I scoured the internet looking for information. I can upon the Advantage Lumber site very early in the process; I added all the items to my cart and printed it off (roughly $3k). It was so easy that I thought sourcing this material would be simple. I figured I could get all of this material locally, so I looked and looked, I even went to the local lumber yard and had them quote me for the same items, which they would have to order. They could not get the lengths I wanted or the hand rails or caps (and the quote for what they could get was $5k), so I went back to the Advantage Lumber site and placed my order (free shipping as well). The wood showed up in about a week, exactly what I ordered (I wanted 14' 1 x 6, so I would have full lengths across the deck), all of the 2 x 4's were in great condition, as were the 4 x 4's, small rail caps and post tops. I spent the day scrubbing the wood, then next day I oiled every side. The deck took a couple weekends to get finished, and it came out perfect! The whole process was intimidating to me, what wood to use, how to fasten it, how to take care of it, what would hold up best given the conditions... I found all of the information I needed on this site. I would recommend this company to anybody. In fact, we are planning new deck off the dining room right now.... It will be IPE from Advantage Lumber as well. read more
