We are frequent visitors to the Deming area as our Mom lives in nearby Columbus, and after reading a couple of the 1-3 Star rating here, we felt the need to speak out with our own review, which is NOT the norm for us.
After 25 years of ALWAYS going out for lunch/dinner at the local Mexican Restaurants (we live in CT where "authentic" Mexican food is basically poor food loaded with salt for flavor....AWEFUL is being very nice), FINALLY we ventured outside our box and tried the Adobe Deli Resturant.
WOW....is all I could say when we pulled up to a dilapidated barn, which in no way resembles a Resturant. We found the entrance through an old fence that surrounds the front "lawn" and followed the path to what started the MOST ENJOYABLE, FUN, and UNIQUE dining experience. The decor pulled us into this Resturant...the food keeps us coming back every time we are in the area.
As other reviews mentioned, the variety of taxidermy throughout the eatery is amazing. The abundance of the other wonderful old west decor will take you several visits to absorb, the antique table bases with copper tops are unique, and it all adds up to a very interesting Resturant. The lighting is extremely dim, as most is provided by old lanterns. Consequently, we usually go before dark, otherwise it can be a bit difficult to see what you are eating, but I can assure you, that whatever you order, will be out of this world.
WARNING...if you have an average appetite, I would suggest splitting a sandwich or plan on bringing half of your meal home. I order either the Ruben or Pastrami sandwiches, and they are ALWAYS fabulous. This is saying a lot since we live where the "best" deli sandwiches come from (New York and CT are noted for their outstanding "Jewish Deli" meats and sandwiches). Pricing is very good, especially for the quality and quantity of food you are served. While the Adobe Deli Resturant located in the middle of the desert on an old dirt road, they have our delis beat by a mile.
NOW THE WAITSTAFF. We have never had a problem with the waitstaff. But, we also do not expect them to be mind readers or always perfect, as we have NEVER met anyone who is capable of doing both after spending only a few minutes in your company. If you go here to enjoy the ambiance, the fantastic food and visiting with your dining partner, the wait service becomes sooo less important. BUT, with that said, we have ALWAYS received exactly what we ordered, always received our order either very hot or very cold, depending on what it is supposed to be, always received our meals within a reasonable timeframe AND have always been served with a pleasant attitude. We personally feel that many folks today expect wait SERVANTS, not the services that are required from a professional waiter/waitress. Also, try and remember, that ALL waitstaff put up with our many different personalities, from the most polite to the extremely rude, from those that can't make up their minds what they want AND always "should have ordered the......", to those that are impossible to please. Waitstaff does NOT prepare our food, they only deliver it, they do not do the hiring, so can not fix understaffing, and most important, ALWAYS remember, they are one of the very few professionals that are expected to work for $1.75-2.75 AN HOUR and depend on our generous tips to support their families. Unfortunately, we have also noticed that in this area of the country, all to often patrons leave $1.00 tip regardless of the bill total. What happened to the standard tip of 15% minimum with the average 20% of the TOTAL bill. Or, if the bill is very low, a minimum of $2.00 a head. Would you stand on your feet, run your legs off and put on a happy face for everyone, all for a measly $1.00? It wouldn't pay for a bad cup of coffee. Sorry for the rant, but this drastic under-tipping issue is far too common and totally unacceptable in my opinion. (No I am not, nor have I ever been in the food services profession. I am ONLY stating what we have observed over and over in the past 32 years of visiting this area of NM. If you can't afford the standard 15-20% tip, maybe you shouldn't eat out.)
With this all said, the Adobe Deli offers a wonderful atmosphere, very nice waitstaff and excellent food and drink. This adds up to a 5 star rating from these frequent Connecticut visitors. ENJOY and remember, if you wear a smile on your face, 9+ out of 10 of the folks waiting on you will do their very best to accommodate your wants and needs. At least that has been our experience in life. read more
