Overcharged because front desk assumed the insurance will bill the work a certain way but ended up doing it differently. That's not a problem bc I know insurance is tough to deal with. I made front desk aware of the issue about 2.5 weeks in advance of what my insurance is saying and was expecting a call from them to resolve. I called back today, 2 weeks later and asked for an update. Front desk said, I will leave admin a note and she will handle on Monday. Today I called and front desk was saying Dr smooke is reviewing it. "Good, could u confirm it was an overpayment of a couple hundred?" She went on this elaborate explanation about yes and no and each insurance is different so Dr smooke is looking into it. I'm like - you should have looked into this during the 2 weeks I gave you and I wasn't expecting you to make assumptions on how different insurance companies work. Overall - it was an awful experience. You have to be on top of your insurance billing because you can't trust this office to do a thorough review. read more

Dr. Smooke was recommended to my father and I by my Aunt, who has had nothing but good things to say. However, both my father and I had unfortunate visits. First off, he was over forty minutes late to examine my father, who is also a doctor. Not a very good way to make an impression considering my dad is never more than 5-10 minutes late for his patients. After expressing this to the receptionist, they sent him back for his examination immediately. Today, I went in for my appointment because I was needing an evaluation on my wisdom teeth which have been causing much pain for me for the past couple of weeks. After the hygienist captured my X-rays, Dr. Smooke came in to give me his evaluation. Now I understand many dentists make their money from cosmetic services, but this doctor flat out kicked me in the gut when I was already down. He went straight to tell me that I had a "gummy smile," and pitched me a sale about a procedure that consists of cutting off the top parts of your gum and add "lumineers" to "enhance" my smile. First off, you can't even see my gums when I smile. I have never thought to have a "gummy smile" or have ever been told so by any friend, dentist, or relative. This was completely uncalled for, especially because I came in with pain and needed actual dental treatment, I did not come in for a cosmetic consultation from this jerk off. After my visit, I called my dad to tell him what "Dr. Adam Smooke" had to say about my smile. Naturally, he was outraged to hear this and called him back immediately. All the dentist had to say for himself was that he was sorry, and that I was 1000 times right, and that he has two daughters of his own- so he knows how he feels. I'm 20 years old, I don't know how old his daughters are, but I know that I would not tell a young girl/woman that she has a "gummy" smile because for all you know they could already be self conscious about a number of things, and I'm sure the last person they want to hear about their flaws from is this BLUNDERING IDIOT DOCTOR. Do yourself a favor and go to a dentist who doesn't focus on cosmetic issues, and maybe concentrates more on dental issues. Targeting young girls who are probably already self conscious as it is, and using that to make an extra sale is not something that someone with a decent amount of integrity would do. ABSOLUTELY KNEW I NEEDED A SECOND OPINION!! Recently moved to Houston and chose a dentist close to my new home.. BAD IDEA! X-Rays were not quality.. "shadows" indicated decay/cavities that needed to be filled, but were hard to see when I asked to see them.. Then explained I had sensitivity and wrote me a prescription for a fluoride that cost $18! Totally unheard of.. Gas for the filling process was extra?! The whole process, he was chatting away and asking questions.. Seriously?! You have a drill in my mouth!! Cavity felt fine until numbing agent wore off.. jagged points on edges that practically cut my tongue and can't floss between two teeth that I received a filling in! Just not standard process to miss that proper floss step! I REALLY should have stopped him after the first cavity was drilled, and I had a bad feeling the whole time! Now I literally just want to cry because I definitely should have gotten a second opinion instead of thinking it was a waste of time! I truly care for my teeth and that was just negligent! Now I'm out $250 and have awful fillings in my mouth. read more

Awesome dentist! A little more expensive than your chain dentists, but so much better. Super clean and up-to-date office and you'll see him, not the dentist scheduled for the day. I'm sorry to say I need extensive dental work, but I knew that before visiting him and he didn't tell me anything I hadn't heard before. Unfortunately keeping the apartment, car, and food on the table have been a little more important lately; but at least I knew he wasn't jerking me around. This man rocks with injections by the way, excellent needle work administering shots. The last time I had an upper pallet shot it was worse than the whole procedure and I cried like a 3 year old. I told him I was terrified and he took his time, made sure to leave the pre-numbing stuff on a little longer, talked calmly and soothingly, and let me tell him when I was ready - who lets you do that?! Watch out for his blinding work-light though - wish I had some shades or tanning goggles on while he worked, but trust me, if that's the most I had to complain about I'll take it. Let's face it, you want the man to see what he's doing right? You'll find Dr. Smooke's office on the 3rd floor. There's another dentist directly in front of the lobby elevator so I got a little confused at first because I forgot to write down his suite number and couldn't find a lobby directory. The office buildings have a free garage around the back so don't even waste time circling the tiny visitor's lot out front. The two buildings next to each other and seemed to host primarily medical offices, a small pharmacy, and a clinic in the other building. Can't say I'll be exicted to make my next appointment, but I won't be as scared. read more

THIS PLACE IS A SCAM, DO NOT GO HERE. I went here having dental insurance. This place overcharges everyone with insurance. They also try to replace fillings that have no problems. When I went in to this place, I had NO DENTAL PAIN. Unfortunately, ever since I let them replace a so-called bad filling I have been in pain ever since. I went back and complained. He said the pain was not the tooth he worked on but a different tooth. I told him to show it to me on the X-ray and he tried to show me the SAME tooth he worked on saying it was a different tooth! Well your insurance marks the teeth by number...it WAS the same tooth he worked on. I will never go back to this place. BE AWARE!!! And I agree with Kasey G.'s review when you don't want to dish out money the staff turns from nice to rude. read more

I saw Dr. Smooke several years ago for a cleaning and exam. He was nice, but he told me that I needed an existing filling replaced. I did not get it replaced and have seen a different dentist since then who said I did not need it replaced. Dr. Smooke told me over six years ago that I needed that filling replaced, I still have not had it replaced, and the existing filling has caused me no problems. I have heard stories of dentists saying certain things needed to be done to be patients when they didn't. I think this was an example of that. I did not need any other dental work done the day I saw him other than a cleaning and exam and believe that he was trying to make extra money off me. read more

Awesome experience. Went in for whitening and needed a cleaning beforehand, which I suspected since it had been 8 months or so since my last cleaning. The cleaning was performed at a very good rate and they did a thorough job. I was extremely pleased with the Zoom whitening as well. Had a terrific experience at Dr Adam Smooke's office today. Went for a cleaning and knew that I would have some future work that needed to be done. The secretary helped me assess the necessary fees - which are pretty standard compared with other dental procedures in Houston. She also gave me all the details about a financing option which looks pretty great. Dr Smooke and his staff were really kind and efficient at the same time. I noticed that they also have what seems to be the most up to date techniques and instruments - this is not the dental experience I would have even 10 years ago. NEVER WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS Dr. He is a RIP OFF. I went 1 time and 1 time ONLY . I have had routine exams 2x a year all of my life. NEVER have I had to have a "Deep Cleaning". The cleaning I received at his office was no more routine than ANY other cleaning yet I was charged TWICE as much. I have worked in Dentistry for 25 years. When he and I discussed the charges, he said, "I guess we will have to agree to disagree". I called to have my x-rays transferred to another office and I was told it would cost me $25. MY xrays were taken digitally. They need to be scanned and emailed to an office and he is trying to charge me 25.00.There is NO reason to charge a patient for something that they paid for. I was told he was with a patient and if I wanted to call back and talk to him I could. I think not. This man has had enough of my time. THIS MAN is out to make money and that's it. read more

I would not recommend this dentist to my worse enemy. I made an appointment because my tooth was hurting and I knew I probably needed a root canal and crown. When I saw him, he clean the tooth and fitted me for a crown. I was told I would need to see a specialist for the root canal. Everyone was nice, at first, then came the bill and my insurance. I paid for half of everything that day then realized when I left they had over charged me $250.00. When I brought this to their attention Dr. Smooke proceeded to tell me the insurance representative I spoke with didn't know what they were talking about and he was correct for charging me the extra $250.00. After lots of phone calls between the dentist, me and my insurance it was settled. My insurance was right and I was over charged. They refunded my money and told me I needed to look for another dentist because he wouldn't be taking my insurance any longer since this happened. Well why would you even accept the insurance in the first place. The Dr. and his staff were very rude and never apologized for the over charge, like it was my fault. The only reason I came back was because I had already paid for half of the crown. When I came back he was really nice (like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde) and after he put the crown in he stated I needed to make another appointment for my other tooth. I had to remind him of what happened the last time and what he said and all he said was, "Oh." This dentist is a HAM (hot a** mess)! I'll take my money elsewhere! read more

Soooo I write this with a heavy heart! I like this doctor's personality but I am in sooo much pain from the fillings he just did. A friend recommended him last time. Exactly a year ago he did my first filling I was in so much pain and that tooth is still sensitive to this day. It had been a year so I somehow forgot that he had recommended I get fillings on my left side teeth. So when I went in October 19, I was just expecting a cleaning. Then it was X-rays and before I knew it I was not being given an option but I needed 4 fillings done! It has been about 5 days and I am popping pain killers to even concentrate at work. My entire left face is in so much pain. The ice I tried putting this morning is not helping either. I don't think I can recommend someone going through what I'm going through right now. After my filling was done examining why I'm in so much pain, the inside flesh was so bruised and hurts and my jaw hurts so much...I have a constant headache that is just non-stop radiating from my left face... read more

The first time I visited Dr. Smooke's office, it was a very pleasurable experience. The office is very clean and beautifully decorated. I should have know how they were able to afford their flat-screen TVs...by over charging their patients. After my x-rays were taken, I was told I had numerous cavities and would need two root canals. He also said he would need to do a "deep clean". That should have set off some alarms too. I am sure he was surprised when my insurance covered the deep clean. He acted like I hadn't been to a dentist in years. I had been faithfully seeing another dentist every 6 months, and should not have needed the deep clean. For the root canals, he referred me to an endodontist. After my root canals were completed, I scheduled my appointment with Dr. Smooke for my crowns. This is where the problems really started. Not only were the procedures NEVER explained to me, the price he charged was astronomical! The office did not file a claim with my insurance, but he "discounted" his normal prices. The prices were not presented to me until after the procedures were completed...but before my permanent crowns were made and applied. The office manager questioned whether or not she had told me the price. I explained to her, if she had I wouldn't be so shocked and upset. When I questioned Dr. Smooke further about the prices and procedures he performed, he told me he was no longer comfortable working on my teeth. I asked him about the thousands of dollars I supposedly owe him, he said I no longer owe him that, but would not refund the money I already paid. Do not go to this dentist. He doesn't care about the patients at all. He only cares about taking your money! It is a shame that we have to blindly "trust" dentists. These people should do what's best for the patients, not what's best for their bank accounts. read more

First of all the lady who works in the office is extremely beligerent. She made a comment about me paying with a Care Credit card as if it wasn't good enough. I'm like, hello lady, credit is money to, no matter what type of credit card it is. I'm so sick and tired of dentist offices promoting the Care Credit card and then acting appalled when you actually use it. Dr. Smooke seemed to be over-looking for problems in my teeth. He does the dental cleanings (he obviously doesn't have a hygenist) and the cleanings are not that good. To be honest, I felt like he was doing more harm than good with his heavy metal instruments in my mouth. I felt like he was way to rough on my teeth with his sharp heaving instruments to the point that I felt like my teeth could possibly be getting damaged in the process. At times, he would even bang-up against my teeth with his instruments. He did some major dental work for me that he had to redo due to faulty outcomes and I'm still not satisfied at all with the results. The teeth around the new dental work (that he had to redo) bleed when I floss. This area never bled when I flossed until now. I'm extremely disappointed in the service I received. I got the feeling that he was just looking for problems to fix to simply make the money off of me. I take good care of my teeth, but he acted as if they were bad. Every time I saw him, there was a different tooth with yet another problem. I would just open my mouth and he would start spatting off of these problems to his assistant. I went in one time for a scheduled cleaning and I didn't even get the cleaning from him. That was all I needed to finally decide to part ways. I'm very unhappy with the dental work I received and if I had to do over, I would definitely find someone else. I'm sure he is well-educated and has happy clients, but for me, it was a bad experience. I got the impression that he did not want to focus on preventative maintenance at all (i.e. cleanings) and just wanted to do major, expensive dental work (ie. bridges, crowns). I'm just sick and tired of dentists wanting to saw down my teeth and slap on crowns for the money (this is how it made me feel). A good dentist should want to preserve a patient's teeth for longevity, instead of immediately wanting to replace them. Overall I just felt like he did not want to clean my teeth. That was the feeling I got. I felt bad even asking to schedule a cleaning, because I felt like he did not want to do that, but he definitely wanted to do crowns and bridges and expensive dental work. He wanted me to do 3 or 4 crowns all within like a few days. I couldn't believe it! Even with insurance, this would have been very expensive for me to do. I did not feel as he was sensitive to my financial situation at all. At times he appeared to be angry or mad with me not scheduling extensive dental work when he wanted it. He made me feel as if I wasn't wealthy enough to be seeing a dentist and bad for not doing all of this dental work he wanted me to do. It was just an odd, odd experience overall. I really felt like if I told him no about any of his suggestions, for whatever reason--financial or other, that he would be angry. I even felt like he didn't want to see me anymore as a customer, if I couldn't do what he wanted me to do to my teeth. I did not feel as if I had the final say in my treatment. Like I said, just an odd, odd experience all together. As I mentioned earlier, the lady who works in the office was very insensitive to my feelings and made me feel bad for asking questions. I really got the impression that she wanted me just to shut-up and do whatever they wanted to do to my teeth, as if I had no say-so in the matter. Again, I'm sure he has some happy clients. I'm just not one of them. I hate to be so critical, but this was unfortunately my experience. I wish it would have been different. I really feel like I tried to give Dr. Smooke my business, time, and money, but I expected to be able to hang-on to my teeth. He also made me feel like he based dental decisions on my age rather than on the reality of the condition of my teeth. He made me feel like due to my age, I was bound to need crowns, bridges, or the like. I feel this is a very discriminatory approach to dental medicine. Yes, take in consideration a patient's age, but don't just automatically expect a patient to get crowns and bridges because of their age. read more

Under NO circumstances should you use the services of Dr. Adam Smooke! While his skills may be up to par; his business ethics are sub-standard. He practices the old 'bait and switch' scam. I purchased a LivingSocial voucher for exam, x-rays and cleaning as I do not have dental insurance. I do see a dentist and pay full price for cleanings/exams twice a year. I purchased the voucher primarily for the x-rays....just to ensure there were no major issues. The staff seemed friendly enough, the offices clean etc....x-rays were taken...then the Dr. came in and was wayyyyyy over the top friendly; to the point that I was like enough with the small talk already. He did not exam me; but proceeded to tell me that I needed a deep gum cleaning instead of the routine cleaning. I told him I just wanted a routine cleaning and he again insisted that I have the deeper cleaning. He said we would do this right or not at all; I mentioned that I did not have insurance and inquired as to the cost. He told me the lady at the front desk (he called her by name but I don't recall what it is) would review that with me, I told him okay I would take a look at it. He had no sooner stepped out and she was there with paper in hand ready to go. Hmmmm funny how quick that was...the plan was for treatment to the tune of $700 or the bargain cash rate of $500. I told the lady that wasn't in my budget at this time and simply wanted the standard cleaning I purchased on the voucher. She informed me that I could complete the treatment plan/payment in sections rather than all at once. I again thanked her and told her I would keep that in mind but would like to have the standard cleaning routinely given. She said she couldn't do that as the Dr. had already said no and she would have to ask him again. I said yes, I'd like to ask him; please ask him to come back and speak with me. I heard her in the hall saying 'she is still asking for the cleaning'....I didn't hear his response but she was immediately back and stated I'm sorry he said no. She offered to show me how to floss which I allowed her to do so that my visit wouldn't be a total loss. And that was that. No exam No cleaning....RipOff!! The thing is my regular dentist has advised me that the deeper cleaning is something I should think about but it by no means prevents me from having the regular cleanings. I have never before posted a review online for services rendered but this instance was such a blatant scam I had no choice. And I sincerely hope that my posting costs Dr. Smooke a great deal of business.....thank you. I had gotten a direct mail ad from him (I should have known then something was off) and went in for a cleaning. $65.00 cleaning my butt! The old bait and switch!
