Their prices are slightly more expensive, and the range of stationary supplies is severely limited, but you're paying for the convenience of not having to travel far (if you live in Concord, anyway). The shop is cluttered and feels a little stuffy, but that's what I love about it. The woman who owns the place is also a highlight of shopping at Go Variety. She is always friendly, helpful and quick with a joke. She always has a funny story to tell, or weird piece of information to impart. With all the stock-standard variety store merchandise, Go Variety is a great place to pick up a few bits and pieces for the home or office.

With $10 each, we parted ways - he towards the baskets and shelves of books and I towards the racks and piles of dresses. This is what we found: - A good range of vintage clothes, including Japanese vintage dresses, at varied prices - at one stall, all dresses were $10. Bargain. - A varied selection of book stalls - one stall selling entire boxes of books for three bucks a box, others selling the same books for $10 each. - Heaps of cheap new and second hand cds ($2 - $10 each) and dvds too. - A tonne of 70's homewares shops selling butter dishes, fondue pots, tupperware, teapots and sugar bowls - Secondhand leather handbags, purses, belts and boots Held the first Saturday of every month in Shannon Reserve, Surry Hills Markets make for a great Saturday morning post breakfast stroll. The first floor of the Surry Hills Library also hosts a Devonshire Tea on market days between 12noon and 3pm for only $5 a serve. Take a friend and challenge yourselves to see who can find the best bargain - I came out with a beautiful floaty Japanese vintage dress for $10. The owner of the store followed me down to a few market stalls, and then had the decency to ask me about the shirt "I stole", and did not even apologise afterwards. Nor did she even appear remorseful at all about her false allegation of an innocent shopper. I don't know if this will stop me from coming again, but I am very disappointed by the rudeness of this particular stall owner.

While a little more expensive than some $2 shops, Daiso is a pretty big brand in Japan, and every item they sell has to be approved by them. I bought a massive clay mug that rightly should have been $5+... so I was pretty chuffed, but I don't think I am the target market. I think their real target are Asian females. Lots of toiletries and makeup things, as well as the usual household products fill the store. Also worth mentioning that compared to other $2 stores, this one is massive. Worth checking out.

Among your stock standards are some fun and interesting items that you might find billowing out the shop's front and onto the street. Recently I brought home beautiful artichokes as well as a few custard apples. Speaking of apples, Galluzzos has some amazingly flavorful unwaxed apples grown in nearby Orange. I got talking to the owner one day and told him that I was originally from San Francisco. The next time I went in the shop, he was delighted to show me the asparagus that had just come in from my home town. He even went as far as to show me the cardboard box in the back with the proud words "Grown in San Francisco" printed along its side. After customer service like that, I won't go anywhere else for my fresh produce.

I am blown away sometimes by how some of these shops stay in business as they are not selling good clothes and what they are selling could be picked up at any St Vin's or Salvo's shop for a fraction of the price. Reuze Vintage in Paddington does not fit into this category but is rather offering quality vintage stock. A relatively new shop, Reuze is more geared towards women and with much lacy garments and formal clothing for both men and women, it is not a shop, which particularly appeals to my sense of style, but none the less their clothes are high in quality and providing a fashion style many people will love.

Cool, right? It's also open 24 hours... Perfect for those night owls like me!
