There is a lot of stiff competition among bakery and baked goods stalls in the market so most who survive really have to put themselves out there with either a catchy niche or gap in the market, or in this case produce some of the highest quality baked thingys to be had in this city. The bakery does the usual array of sweet and savoury, the sweet being the most impressive. Glazed buns, chocolate cakes, chewy American style cookies which rival Big Ted's available close by and any number of muffins, pastries and cupcakes. I tried a fresh cream donut the last time I was there. Coated in a thin layer of close to sickly sweet whit icing and bunged to the rafters with a sweet cream filling. Light, soft and chewy and heavily glazed it was brilliant if I must say. The staff who run the place are fantastic. I was enquiring about the possibility of getting a chocolate cake made to order for a family member's birthday down the line too, which they said would be grand.

The stand does a huge rage of all things baked including Muffins & Cupcakes, Pastries, Desserts, Gateau's & Tarts, Soft Chewy Cookies, Speciality Bread, Scones....the list goes on! And everything is crafted with immaculate care and precision. Particular favourite of mine are their scones, which are heaving with fruit, and their Danish pastries, which have just the right amount of cinnamon and beautifully light and flaky pastry. One unusual service but one I think should be highlighted is their Bun on The Run service, which is to do with the noble tradition of bringing your own cake to work on your birthday!You can order your buns and French Village will deliver them for you if you want, and best of all they will give you a free bun for your troubles!

This place has been up and running for decades now and has been able to survive the downturn in footfall to the Ballynahinch main street due to the new stupid road system due to a core pool of loyal customers. They are loyal for good reason. Warm and friendly staff, freshly baked breads of all types and genres ranging from traditional Irish favourites to more modern breads, to a wide range of buns, cake and tray bakes. The fried bacon and sausage looked rather nice so I had that with their fresh soda bread and tea which was served up quickly and was as good as it looked. There were also things chicken and broccoli bake, lasagne and chips along with scones. A great spot for a straightforward refuel with no pretensions to anything other than coming up with the goods.

Unfortunately it was a wee bit late for a bakery visit, in fact it was nearly 1:30 (ok, so a lot late), and they were lacking in a lot of bread / rolls / cakes etc. I did spot a coffee cake, but it was huge and weighed an absolute ton. Besides, by the time I got it back to Dundonald, it would probably have been comparable actual coffee...it was pretty warm and sticky outside. Deciding to opt for a couple of almond fingers and a couple of iced fingers, I informed the lady behind the counter (who didn't seem all that impressed and was quite abrupt with me), paid and went on my way. Needless to say, the iced fingers glued themselves to the almond ones, and they were essentially fit for nothing by the time I got home (good one Lynne). This didn't put off my sister though, and she ate away at them. When later asked whether they were nice or not, a "uh huh" was suffice. At least that was something...

A family run butchers, with a huge range of meat and meat dishes, plus a deli...and I buy some Toffee Squares. I think my whole life is generally an oxymoron... To be fair, there is a small bakery section, plus a few shelves full of chutneys, oils and sauces, so it wasn't all that strange. I think. Mr Butcher certainly appreciated this anyway, for the following conversation ensued: Jolly Butcher: Hello there! [Looks at my sister] Are you not buying something too? Me: Nope, I'm the one with the money I'm afraid. Jolly Butcher: Awk ok [Looks at the both us, back and forth, back and forth] Me: Yes, we're sisters! [Laughs and smiles at the realisation dawns on Jolly Butcher's face] Jolly Butcher: Ah yes, I thought so! I can definitely see it. Me: Really? No-one ever thinks we do. [Pays for Toffee Squares] Jolly Butcher: Awk, well you can carry those [looks at my sister, and hands her plastic bag, and then hands me my change and receipt]. Me: I like you! And we bid him farewell. Once we got home, my mum had noticed the receipt lying on the table. As soon as she picked it up, she loudly enquired as to why we had bought £20.83 worth of fillet and sirloin steak, when we had obviously purchased Toffee Squares. Laughter ensued as I guaranteed her we hadn't bought any meat whatsoever, and I had merely been given the wrong receipt. Ah, my life is a barrel of laughs...made all the funnier by certain escapades in Masseys. Excellent in every way.

It has a wider range than most butchers as they have milk, a bread stand and they sell other home sauces and tinned goods, as well as a large stand of their pre prepared meals. That for me is the main excellent and simultaneously bad thing about this place. Their meals were a great idea, as the concept was food to go but of a better quality.Unfortunatel y they has taken things for granted and the quality of these products has slipped, which is hard to accept when they are so expensive. The whole butchers isn't cheap but it is good quality and delicious, with locally sourced meats in all the varieties you could ever want.
