Well that all changed today when my father convinced me to go for a three week bout of nearly every illness one can get. I was able to book an appointment for the same hour, and the front desk was super flexible when I was running late. Once I arrived, I was taken in within 2 mins and brought to a clean, private space. Aidan was amazing and truly took the time listen, ask follow-up questions, and let me know what to expect for the remainder of the visit. He is a gem and his personality helped make me feel comfortable and taken care of. Dr. Gold took the time to go through my history, every single noted symptom as well as some I hadn't even mentioned. He took his time with the physical exam, even double checking and making sure not to miss anything. They ran a rapid strep, flu, and Covid test as well as a chest x-ray on-site, with the results given within 10 minutes. My only regret is waiting as long as I did to be seen because, unfortunately, there was nothing they could treat me for. I will not hesitate to return in the future.

People are difficult to deal with, and these folks have to deal with many people who are not feeling well, who are often navigating a tangle of insurance and stressed out, and who are probably snapping at the CSR because of it. I always give the benefit of the doubt with customer service folks, especially in healthcare - it is NOT an easy job! And in my experience, I most often get what I give as far as how I am treated. As for my medical experiences, I've been an Acton Medical patient for almost my entire life, and I have had very solid experiences with them throughout - especially of late. Dr. Natalie Cohen has developed a solid and trusting doctor-patient relationship with me, making meaningful notes about our conversations so she can follow up next time, never making me feel like she is in a rush, asking about and making suggestions for the health of my whole self, and truly listening and making me feel like she is honestly invested in my well being. We live in town and I've had to visit multiple departments, including the ER for both myself and taking my parents. In the 10 years or so since I first left the review, I can honestly stay I stand by my original assessment. If you, literally, don't think you'll survive the drive to Lahey or Mass General then certainly go here. Otherwise, do whatever you can to get to a better hospital. Aside from my own 1-star experiences, I've heard multiple stories of similar experiences of close friends and immediate family getting grossly misdiagnosed by Emerson. Most recently they sent a friend home after a CAT scan with a "concussion" which, fortunately, the Lahey Clinic almost immediately discovered were severe brain lesions. My father was in a car accident where Emerson missed a broken back and concussion - again, fortunately, caught days later by another hospital. It's unfortunate as we live about 2.3 miles away but between our experiences and local paramedics recommending other hospitals, it's simply not worth stopping unless absolutely critical. (Side note: Yelp's, "Not Recommended" reviews for Emerson are worth a read.)

The doc came in, spent 10 minutes with me, and the charge to BCBS (which I have a vision plan for), was $485 PLUS they charged me $65 to do the refraction eval. Neither Medicare or BCBS with EyeMed coverage covered the $65. Never have I had to pay for an annual through insurance. It's ridiculous and exhausting, and expensive. If you're worried about the cost of eggs, worry instead about the ridiculous charges from doctors of all kinds. Based on other reviews, I'm going to find myself another group to go to.

This time, I called the pharmacy in advance and asked if Minute Clinic could prescribe antibiotics for a chest infection and was told they could. Spent 10 minutes filling out check in forms, then waited for the practitioner only to be told they could NOT prescribe antibiotics for a chest infection and sent me to an urgent care center. Take my advice, skip Minute Clinic and make an urgent care center your first choice.

But i did want to get a Hepatitis-A shot before leaving for the World Cup in South Africa on Friday (so i wouldn't have to worry quite so much if my brother sought out a strange place to eat), so i was pleased to find out that the CVS down the street from my office could do it. They smartly have a check-in kiosk akin to the one at Apple's Genius Bars, which is easy to use, although some of the information you enter might have to be handwritten on another form. The paperwork is not too bad, though, and they do a good job of making it clear what they will and won't do with information, and what information they'll provide you with. On one day, i went in to ask one of the nurse practitioners what shots they did, and she was very well-informed and helpful. The second one that actually administered the shot on another day was also very professional and explained well what i needed to do for another shot, and how to get my insurance to cover it. In general, i'm a huge fan of anybody or any thing that allows people to do simple things in a simple way, and this certainly qualifies. Here's hoping they offer more services in the future so i can really put off going to see a doctor!

I received periodic text messages for coordination including reminders, which is helpful for me. The prep is onerous, in particular the five day low fiber diet ahead of the procedure. But, I guess if this gives a better result, I can deal with it once every five years. I had to arrive at 7:30 AM which meant I took my second round of Sutab just after midnight. Lesson learned, never again. That kept me up most of the night giving me maybe a couple hours sleep over the previous 36 hours. I couldn't wait for the general anesthetic! The office experience was straightforward, the people were friendly and efficient. Might have been even more straightforward if ALL the forms had been available online. I'm thinking patient history form here. Otherwise, their automation was terrific. The procedure personnel were all similarly friendly and efficient. The whole thing happened quickly, no fuss, no muss. I woke up easily from the anesthetic, was able to put on my pants standing on one leg at a time. The medical staff were fully present, helpful, even kind, and answered all my questions. Nobody goes through a medical procedure for fun, but Gastro Health minimized the negatives and accentuated the positives.
