More than once have I overheard an unhappy person finding out that they have to pay $150 for their test at the counter. If their website wasn't clear before, there are now at least three different places throughout the process of making an appointment online that indicate whether or not your test will be covered. I've shown up both with and without an appointment. If you don't have an appointment, wait time kind of depends on time of day and time of year(around the holidays is busier). Each time I've visited I felt the visit went smooth and my visit was as pleasant as getting swabbed could be.

Don't think for a minute that you're going to be seen by a "country doctor," as in rural America, at Mass General Waltham. That is absolutely not the case. MGH has brought the physicians, clinicians, technology, expertise, and high standards of its downtown "Mother Ship" on Fruit Street to Mass General Waltham. For more times than I care to admit, I have had surgery AGAIN in the Same Day Surgery Unit at Mass General Waltham. Everything I remembered about the unit proved true, once again: the care is consistently exceptional, and the kindness and professionalism of the staff are extraordinary. The consistency of care at Mass General Waltham is exactly what I would expect from a top-tier, High Reliability Organization. The facility is filled with reliable systems of care and expert clinicians--and, equally important, people who genuinely care about the patients they serve. Again, when I arrived at the Same Day Surgery Unit, I was greeted by an especially kind, welcoming, caring, professional, and efficient member of the front-desk staff. I was then escorted into the patient-only area by my pre-op nurse. From admission through discharge, I was continually impressed by the kindness, compassion, professionalism, and efficiency of every person I encountered. What is particularly striking is how much the staff seems to love working at Mass General Waltham. It felt as though everyone I met had come from the "Mother Ship" downtown and then arrived at a "Happy Place"--one that reminds me of the "Happy Island" of Aruba. Nursing was over the top--absolutely fantastic--as were anesthesia and surgery. As someone who has dedicated my career to patient safety, systems and process engineering, and High Reliability Organizations, I pay very close attention to how care is delivered. From that perspective, Mass General Waltham is exceptional. At every step of my surgical journey, there were appropriate verifications, structured handoffs, and optimal transfers--not only of me as a patient, but also of the information necessary to care for me, safely. The systems were reliable, the communication was excellent, and the people providing my care were outstanding. My care was flawless, as were the people who provided it and the systems supporting that care. I simply cannot say enough positive things about the people, processes, and quality of care at Mass General Waltham. It is a privilege to be a Mass General Waltham patient. Unfortunately, I'll be back in the operating room, again, in a few months. The garage, however, is a hot mess. We entered the garage from the street entrance to go left to the green building. Then you find you're actually at the blue building entrance. This requires an elevator to the 4th floor then a bridge to the green building on foot, then to whichever floor in that building. Unfortunately, upon entering the blue building from the parking lot, there are no signs to inform you. We happened to see a janitor and asked him how to get to the green building. Wouldn't it make more sense to allow you to park near the green building? Too confusing.

The sudden onset of vision loss was of great concern to me. Upon contacting Dr. Bhan's office, Dr Bhan made time to immediately see me, no days of waiting. My access to her care was immediate and excellent. Dr Bhan's outstanding "bedside manner" is warm, reassuring and highly informative. Her compassionate demeanor immediately gave me great confidence and reassurance that all would be fine. Upon my arrival at her office, I was immediately taken into the exam room. The exam environment is clean and filled with what appeared to be every conceivable type of equipment she would need, as well as several models of the human eye and associated structures. These items help me understand what was wrong with my sight and how Dr. Bhan recommended we solve the problem. I decided to go forward with having both eyes corrected. Karen in the front office was a very valuable asset to me. She explained all the pre-op requirements, ordered specific medication for pre-op preparations and was there to assist us every time we called. Thank you, Karen! When I arrived at the hospital to have the procedure performed the intake and day surgery preparations were fast and easy. Dr. Bhan greeted me in pre-op, once again thoroughly explained what was about to happen and out, I went! After two weeks of recovery my sight is 20/15 and I have never been able to see so clearly. Emerging from the pandemic, I wanted to get my eyes checked again so I called for an appointment. I was given an appointment and then I received a call that my appointment would be canceled unless I called to discuss my insurance. I have Tufts Health Together presently, which is a MassHealth plan. I have had lots of other types of other insurance in the past, and this is only temporary. When I finally talked to Dr. Bahn's office, the woman who spoke to me was very, very curt with me (as if she didn't want to waste her time with me), as she told me Dr. Bahn didn't take my insurance and that she was canceling my appointment. I asked her how much it would cost to pay completely out of pocket, and she said and I quote: "It's $175.00 just to walk in the door." I really like Dr. Bahn but I will never return as her patient even if my next insurance is the best that money can buy. People should be nicer to one another, especially now.
