I had read so many terrible reviews for U-Haul or Budget, I was completely stressed out and having nightmares the U-Haul I rented wasn't available when I went to get it. So my husband found this local place, and I'm so glad! We got a decent sized trailer for 100 bucks for the weekend (50/day). They are closed on Sundays, so they don't charge for that day. They quickly hooked it up to my hitch and disconnected it when I got back. Watching these guys on the phone and with customers, it's clear they do a ton of business, and they know exactly what they're doing at this point. They even waived their late fee for me, as I overslept and brought it back 2 hours late on Monday. They don't just rent trailers either, they have pretty much everything under the sun, including party tents and equipment. I even saw slushy machines and popcorn makers. Over a week before the date on which I wished to pick up the vehicle, I reserved a high-roof cargo van through the Penske web site. Right away I got a confirmation email. On the agreed upon pickup day, when I got to A1 Express Rental Center's Rice Lake place of business, they did not have the van I had reserved. Instead, they expected me to take a cube-truck that would have been way too large, and unfit for transporting our dog. There was barely enough room in the cabin for two people, but not for the dog as well. He would have been relegated to the cargo area, in complete darkness, unable to even see or hear us. Furthermore, the truck had tires with bald shoulders. It was dirty, covered with dust and leaf litter from an overhanging tree. And, frankly, it lacked even a decent amount of passenger leg room. I told the employees that A1 Express Rental Center had treated us shamefully. I lost a day of time by having to go to U-Haul in Superior Wisconsin and rent exactly the kind of vehicle I needed....at half the price that the Rice Lake outfit wanted us to pay. Lesson learned. Do not trust A1 Express Rental Center.

Most other retailers charge 30% to 35% less for a 4 hour rental. When I called, because I thought there had been an error on what I was charged, the owner was nasty, sarcastic, rude & argumentative. More than once we have described our customer service experience as being similar to dealing with a wounded wolverine. There are 24 other rental businesses within 12 miles- so no need for me to return. They just lost my 25 years worth of business- I don't take well with being yelled at because I thought I was overcharged.
