This review was long overdue. Totally a cool place. Action camera has been a great asset to our small business in getting our cameras repaired and get a new gear when we need to increase our arsenal of equipment. I was a little bit hesitant to buy any camera gear from a local camera shop as I thought their prices were going to be out rages. They ended up being about 20% less than some Amazon prices and B and H photo. we have had two cameras sent back to Canon through action camera and it didn't even take three weeks. Nice place to look at, but not buy, gear. Everything I've come here for has been priced much higher than elsewhere. Usually 10-20% higher. That may mean $20 on a bag, or more recently, $200 on a lens. I'm not sure if they haggle or not, I haven't bothered when much lower prices are immediately available at other stores. Do not go for their "free sensor cleaning" unless you're willing to risk your camera being ruined. I was shocked when I called and they said their sensor cleaning was free. What a great deal -- other camera shops in the area charge upwards of $80 to do it. I went in and asked how they do it. The woman who helped me said they use compressed air and regular Q-tips with cleaning solution. So basically, they are doing sensor cleaning in a way that could damage your sensor and total your camera. YIKES. Everything I have read says to never use compressed air on your sensor. You don't need to be a photography expert to understand that propellent fluid can come out of compressed air canisters and leave residue on your sensor, which is very delicate. You should also never use a Q-tip on your sensor because Q-tips can leave behind lint and residue. Q-tips are not meant for the very careful task of cleaning a camera sensor that is worth hundreds of dollars. I was floored when she told me that's how she intended to clean my camera sensor. I obviously did not let her go through with it. I guess I now know why I felt uncomfortable when the first thing she asked me to do was sign a form absolving Action Camera of all responsibility if they ruin my sensor. You would think they would do it properly and then have you sign after they are done to acknowledge that the camera worked correctly when you left the store. Very, very sketchy. I looked at their cleaning supplies and they have a ton of stuff that is not designed for sensor cleaning, but other all-purpose uses. And everything was way overpriced. I'll order a cleaning kit from Amazon and do it myself or I'll pay the price to have someone else do it PROPERLY. Steer clear. Extremely unprofessional and they just might ruin your DSLR camera. read more

I really can't say enough good things about Action Camera. I'm a professional photographer and found them when I relocated to the area. I was used to paying $20+ for a sensor cleaning and these guys do it for "free" with a tip jar out. And they do it while you wait. And they do a better job than I used to pay a lot more for. On top of that the staff is great, always eager to help; I've heard them explain the most basic thing to someone who wasn't even buying anything. They have a great selection of cases, tripods, accessories -- just a great store all around. My only complaint is that they're 20 miles away. This shop is great. I recently bought a lens from an online competitor and had a problem. They looked at it for me and helped me determine it was likely just some minor adjustments that needed to be made. I ended up buying a lens that day through them and they were great. They made me feel confident in my decision and let me know if I had any problems to come back to let them check it out. I also like that they are a drop off spot for a lens rental company. Since then I have learned my lesson and will support my local small business instead of an online chain. The only reason why I did not give them 5 stars is because they do not price match with their top competitors which is very unfortunate when everyone is trying to save when they shop. read more

Hands down this is the best real camera store in the greater sacramento area. While I didn't get a chance to see the camera store that closed down in the arden area, compared to pardee's these people really know how to treat a customer.. For the longest time I was waiting for nikon mb-80 battery pack to come into stock, it was sold out everywhere on line BH, adorama, because thats just how nikon is once it's gone it's hard to find.. this place had 3 of them in stock ready to go.. same with the new Nikon 35mm DX.. nowhere on line had them in stock, this store had 8 of them that I could count.. I almost thought of buying a bunch and hawking them online at an over zealous price since people were desperate to pay for them.. (but i didn't) For some reason since it's tucked away in roseville and in a little mini mall this place is overlooked.. which makes me sad.. The sales rep spent as much time as i needed even just shooting the breeze about future lens's i wanted even before he knew i was going to buy something.. and like most artists.. i don't dress like I have money.. this is something pardee nee'ds to learn, just because you dress like a creative poor scmuck doesn't mean you don't have money morons.. owner even told me look invest in some better HQ lenses before saving up for a high end flagship body.. and it's more important to just be able to get out there and shoot rather than saving up for the beesknee's and go without.. My only complaint is the stores hours but hey.. nowhere in this city is 24/7 or alternate shift like san francisco so you can't fault them for the city conditions.. now if only i could convince the owner when i need to make a purchase to stay open late enough for me to get there from work.. ;P read more

I went there to pick up my order from Borrowlenses. It's a small shop, but the people, at that time, are great! One person was helping a customer pick a camera, and the gal who helped me, I wish I remembered her name.. started with a D and it was a cool name, was very friendly and well-rehearsed on what's going on in the camera and lenses world. Anyways, I don't live in the area and I went here only once when I came up to Roseville to photograph a wedding. I recently took up photography. I went to Action Camera for some accessories and tips on my camera. The staff is very knowledgeable and took their time explaining things to me. They didn't push me to buy the most expensive accessories, but the ones that would best fit MY needs based on how frequently I use my camera. Remick and I even spent about 1/2 hour playing Macgyver with a shoulder harness for hands free camera use, custom for my needs.... Awesome service!!!!! read more

They're one of the classiest photo stores I've seen in a long time. They're an old-fashioned photography store except with all of the latest equipment. I live in the Bay Area but work in Sacramento, so it's worth it to me to drive out to Action Camera to buy what I need because I haven't found anything around Sacramento that meets my needs. Great staff, always ready to help you up and beyond the regular call of duty. They have lots of choices, and everything is well organized. It's fun just to see what's new in photography. Went in to buy a bigger Think Tank bag and one or two Nikon or Sigma ART lenses for my Nikon D850. Looked at bags for about fifteen minutes. One gentleman asked if I was finding what I was looking for. I said that I was not. I was looking for something a bit bigger than the MindShift Photocross 10. I don't remember if he replied before walking away. He certainly didn't ask what I was looking for or what my needs were - just walked away. A few minutes later, I asked the same gentleman about pre-owned lenses for Nikon. He said 'Yeah, we have a few' and pointed at the cabinet. OK...I stared at them for a couple minutes - nobody interrupted my staring by asking what I was looking for. I then moved around to the front counter to look at new lenses - I was really looking for a super-wide prime or zoom. Not only did nobody ask me if I needed help or even acknowledge me, another gentleman started taking the lenses I was looking at OUT of the cabinet to put away for the night. I was sort of flabbergasted. I even said out-loud that they seemed more interested in putting them away than selling me lenses. The guy just looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language. No offer to help or anything. Just odd. Was it my workout pants and t-shirt? I don't know. There were at least three employees there, and I only remember two other customers coming in in the half hour I was there. Ugh. Very disappointed. I really want to support brick-and-mortar local businesses. Just cannot recommend this store unless you need something now and they have it. read more

I have both good and bad experiences. When I go into the shop they are friendly, and helpful. A couple times in the past year I rented items from Borrow Lens. On my first experience I had my wife call and ask them if they rented camera gear because we knew they worked with Borrow Lens. The man who answered the phone was rude to her and told her no. Knowing that they were a drop off and pick up location for BL I knew they weren't being totally honest. I decided to walk into the store and ask the same question in person. I asked an older man if they rented camera gear. He said no they don't do any of that and that I should go to another store. WTF? I left knowing he had just lied to my face. On another occasion, I rented about $1200 in gear from Borrow Lens and selected Action Camera as a pick up and drop off location. When I arrived to pick up my items the $600 lavaliere mic was missing - apparently BL's fault - they rushed shipped me a replacement. I dropped off all of the items including said mic at Action Camera. To their credit, they were friendly, however. I spent 3 weeks working with Borrow Lens to track down that missing lavaliere mic. Yes it took 3 weeks for that mic to show up! Did AC screw up and not send it in properly and lie about it? I will never know. But one thing is for sure, I wont bother using them with BL anymore. Now just today, I called looking for a Tascam DR-60D and explained that I am trying to shop local and not on the internet. Man who answered the phone said: "yeah yeah we don't carry that stuff" Me: Well Im just trying to shop local. AC man: "yeah thanks for the call" click. Another WTF moment with these guys. So I was told they don't carry camera equipment (audio recorder for dslr) and was basically told to scram. That's a $200 accessory they don't want to sell... WOW! I deal with enough idiots in my daily life, and I don't feel like I should pay somebody for being one -- I will never (attempt to) shop there again. Be aware that Action sells demos and open box cameras at full retail without letting customers know they have been previously used. After discovering accessories in my "new" camera's box had been unwrapped, and the battery installed, I was surprised to find an SD card with several folders of photos in the memory card slot. I returned to the store and asked if I could exchange it for a new, unused camera, and was told I could either keep the used one, or return it for credit, as they did not have another one in stock. I asked if store policy was to sell demos as new, without disclosure, at full price, and she replied that it was. read more

They are quite a distance away from Sacramento proper. For as little as the store is, there is a lot of stuff inside. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. They are more than willing to order stuff if you don't see it. I love the fact that they do in house sensor cleaning for your camera on a donation basis. I've bought a fair share of equipment here. They also buy and sell used gear. That's a plus. They do a biannual photographers swap meet in their parking lot, so that gives them plenty of business for me. I have had two experiences with Action Camera in the past 7 months, and both, despite frustrating circumstances, have been satisfying. My D700 has had intermittent focusing issues since the beginning of 2013. Last July I finally took it in to have it looked at. Naturally the camera functioned perfectly while in the hands of the store associate, Edward (isn't that always how it works)? He fiddled with the settings, changed out my lenses as well as some he had on the shelf, and even cleaned the contacts, not just on my camera but on all three of my lenses as well - FREE OF CHARGE - before resorting to his offer of sending it to Nikon for further investigation. At the time I had upcoming commitments which prevented me from being able to part from my camera for 6+ weeks, so I graciously declined. And while I left the store still owner of a temperamental piece of equipment, I was pleased with the professionalism and care Edward had demonstrated, and planned to come back when my schedule could accommodate several weeks away from my camera. Since July, the focusing issues have worsened, and I finally brought it back to Action Camera last week, fully prepared to see it go to Nikon. {I sent my camera to Nikon prior to this for an unrelated issue, and out the door spent $50 in shipping/insurance fees, so Action Camera's $35 fee, plus the peace of mind that if something happened it wasn't on my shoulders, was a no-brainer.} The store associate I worked with this time, Dylan, tinkered with the camera some, but as we both suspected, quickly came to the conclusion that a trip to Nikon was the only way to truly diagnose and fix the problem. I am now awaiting a call from Lori, who should be contacting me within 1-2 weeks (once she's heard from Nikon) with a diagnosis and quote. While I can't predict the outcome of the coming weeks, I am confident Action Camera will keep me in the know, maintain their professionalism, and get my camera back to me, safe and sound. read more

I tend to overlook 5 star reviews, honestly. I do what many do. I toss out the extremes and pay attention to the 3 and 4 star reviews. They tend to be where you find the truest information and the most honest opinions. There are, however, exceptions to every rule. Action Cameras is one such exception. The staff was friendly, very knowledgeable, helpful and let us try out everything before purchase. I think it was Melissa who helped us. My niece was looking for a way to eliminate shadows in her photos and she was presented with multiple options. The most expensive didn't turn out to be the best option for her, and they didn't push for the more expensive solution. And she was able to get a nice quality muslin backdrop for 49.95, which IS competitively priced. It would probably cost more online once you factor in shipping. And online, you can't actually attach this stuff to your camera and try it first. Online, you don't have someone who knows their stuff standing there helping you creatively brainstorm for solutions. There's a focus on Nikon (with a lot of canon stuff, too) which is great for me because I'm a Nikon guy, always have been. This tiny store is packed full of so much stuff, I decided to give up looking and come back on another day to spend more time just browsing what they had. They cleaned my niece's Nikon's sensor free. Even cleaned her lens. And offered to take a look at my old Nikon, which has a battery door issue. This is now my go-to camera store of choice after so many visits to Pardee's and feeling rushed/talked down to. Those guys are all pros, you bet. And I've seen some of their work. Some of it has a real professional "Olan Mills" feel to it. (if you missed the sarcasm there, let me point it out to you here) In other words, having years of experience and top notch equipment at your disposal will not always guarantee that you'll create great photographs or even mediocre art, but it can sometimes guarantee you'll create generically good looking shots. But where's the fun in that? It's not enough to have the golden ratio imprinted in your brain at birth and a "price is not a factor" bank account. Sometimes it's more about the fun and the joy. And I think the folks at Action Camera get that and actually have fun helping you become a better photographer. Whereas at some other stores you can get the sense that they've pegged you AS something the second you walk in the door. Not so at Action. I've racked my brain for a negative and the only things I can think of are the hours and a lack of more obscure products. We found ourselves rushing to make it there before they close at six, which could be an inconvenience for anyone working a literal 9 to 5. And I've been looking for a Holga camera, which they did not stock. However, they did hint at being able to help me modify (light leaks) it if I purchased one elsewhere. But those are kind of petty complaints. It's worth rushing to after work, trust me. If you use Canons or Nikons, this is your place. read more

I was in the market for a 70-200mm F2.8 lens and had done a ton of research on lenses via the web. I was trying to determine which make/model/version I should purchase and the challenge I had was that no matter how many reviews I read I didn't know how it would work and feel with my camera. The staff was incredible. I discussed what I was going to be shooting with the lens and they made several useful recommendations and what was even better, they let me try out the lenses with my camera so I'd be able to compare how well each of them would work. I ended up getting some great advice and ideas to consider. My intention was to return home to make my purchase on-line, but after all the great service they provided I bought it from them and didn't mind paying $100 more for the lens than I could have got it for on-line (although I should point out that with shipping it would have been only a slight savings). I've recommended this shop to a number of friends as their customer service and photography knowledge is second to none. Everyone I know who has gone in has been more than happy they did (even those who didn't buy anything). Definitely worth a visit. read more
