The fact their rating is so high tells me one thing... either they paid for these reviews or all of them are white/looked white when they went into the store. Today my husband went in and was there for 10-15 minutes. No one ever asked him if he needed help nor did they ever acknowledge him. When a white woman walked in, at least two workers immediately said hello and asked if she needed help, practically falling over themselves to help her. I told him maybe they saw an "easy mark" who would buy whatever they suggested, but he said then a white man walked in and got the same treatment. Needless to say, the workers were also melanin-challenged, which explains it all. I am not one to cry "racism" for any little thing, but this was pretty obvious. This makes me angry that we ever bought two bikes there but I can tell you this, we will never return and hope that those who expect to be treated fairly don't shop there either. If you are okay with people of color being treated this way, by all means have at it. Side note, the owner was friendly enough when we purchased the bikes before and he was busy today. Maybe it is just the two workers that were there but this type of behavior has to have happened before and it is his responsibility to make sure his customers are treated the same across the board. read more

Unbelievable Service - It's so refreshing to go into a shop and have the staff actually care about their customers. Howard and his team are amazing. The bikes he stocks are mostly mid-level, but Howard can order any level of bike - He's helped my wife and I purchase some very high-end Fuji bikes. Howard's prices are fair, his work is amazing and I look forward to visiting the shop any chance I can get! read more

Howard and his crew are great!! Top notch customer attention, great advice, great service and friendly staff!. I'm 6,000 miles into my tour of the country via bicycle and swung over to Action Bikes on my way out of San Antonio to pick up a spare inner tube and some new brake pads. They liked what I was doing so much that as I was handing them my credit card to pay for the two items the guy at the register simply said it was on the house. Big thanks to Action Bikes! read more

The staff at action bikes are amazing. You know that Howard loves bikes because he literally talked to my wife and I for an hour about the merits of a 29er, Colorado, trails, and bike fitting. Unfortunately I did not buy a bike here, as my buddy sold me his high end bike. However, I most definitely took it to action bikes for assembly and tuning. Jared was patient with my questions, and had it ready to go the next day. When I went to pick it up nick talked to me for another 20 min about the bike and parts, etc. Everyone is very friendly and knowledgeable. The shop is well stocked and crammed with bikes. I don't really give Kudos or vouch for anything unless I really mean it, and action bikes has earned my business for as long as I am here, so much so that I am willing to spend a little more just for the customer service and support rather than buying online. read more

I bought a bike on Craigslist, knowing it had some problems but thinking the repair costs would be worth it. Took it to Action Bikes. Was made to feel like a long lost friend even if I hadn't bought my bike there. In fact, seeing the large selection of bikes in the shop, I realized I could have had as good or better a bike - and a new one - for close to the same cost. In over an hour over two days, I was never made to feel I'd asked a dumb question. Answers were knowledgeable, and not terse. Best of all, I was able to hear them because loud music was not playing in the shop. All the parts I needed were on hand (new tires, tubes, a spoke, gear cable assembly) and the bike was ready the next day, as promised. The cost of parts and labor seemed on target. Those of us who are or were in the military get a discount as well. Action Bikes is the kind of shop every town needs to have. We'll be a lot worse off if it's gone. By which I mean I wish I hadn't already bought a book, a lock and a seat at Amazon. Action Bikes had the same ones (maybe not the same lock), and for about the same price. Howard and his crew have a great shop. Let's support them. read more

Got a quote to fix the spider and gears on my Jamis. I asked what the bottom dollar was and the quote I was given was ~75.00. Went to pick it up and they gave me a balance of ~150.00. They told me the quote didn't include labor. These guys are stoned. Bike was fixed and continues to work well. Communication was lacking. I wouldn't call surprise charges fair or reasonable. read more

I'm new when it comes to biking, and I brought my bike in needing some advice. Howard and the other employees were EXTREMELY helpful and patient with me; they answered all my questions, helped me figure out the best solution to my problem, and even test-rode the bike to make sure everything was in order. No one pressured me into buying anything unnecessary, and Howard helped me custom tailor my bike to my needs. tl;dnr version: I am extremely pleased with the product selection, customer service, and expertise at this store. I can't recommend it highly enough. Thanks Howard! read more

I've done business with Howard for over 15 years. What I love about Howard is his passion for sharing both the technical aspects for bicycle sports as well as the emotional experience of being part of the cycling community. I've ridden bikes since before I can remember so I was pretty sure I knew everything about riding... then I had the blessing of meeting Howard. I now realize I'll never reach his level of understanding. I also know he'll never run out of energy lifting me a little higher each and every time I have the pleasure of being in his presence. It only takes about a minute with Howard to know his heart is pure and his concern for your welfare is unsurpassed. Is he a straight-shooter? You bet, but his candor comes from ensuring your safety and enjoyment. Howard doesn't up-sell you simply to grab your cash. He knows that putting you on a bike that fits your abilities and expanding your knowledge and confidence, you'll be a customer for life. More than merely creating a "customer", Howard is fostering growth in the cycling community. I'd venture to say that if you ever had a questionable experience at Action Bikes it's likely you arrived expecting to be ripped off or you were unwilling to be humble and realize that you had an opportunity to learn more about cycling. "Know-it-alls" are like that. I'm in retail myself, there are customers who are adversarial regardless how much you try to help them; it's just a fact. Howard can sleep well at night because he knows he's done the right thing. read more

I went to a few bike shops here in town looking to purchase my first mountain bike. At some of the shops I visited, I felt like I was in a car lot with high pressure sales people. Some felt like they only cater to the high-end bike person. I heard about Action Bikes from my brother-in-law, who has been going there for years. He kept telling me, "You will not get this kind of service anywhere." When I first walked in, I knew this was the place I was going to buy from. You can tell that these guys just love bikes. They know their products, and after telling then what I was looking for and my price range, I walked out with the perfect bike. The next week, I went back and bought my wife a bike. There are bigger bike shops out there, but if you're looking for unbelievable customer service I highly recommend Action. read more

Howard and the guys at action bikes are awesome! Bought my first hardtail 29er about a year back and just purchased my first full suspension and couldn't be any happier. I test rode multiple bikes and Howard showed me plenty of options that weren't in the shop and the guys were great setting me up and getting me out the door. I send all my buddies to action bikes and they love it. I have never left the shop without learning something new from Howard or the guys. read more

I've been on a quest for a bike since I hate running. So I remembered seeing a review for this establishment on Yelp. I decided to drop by one afternoon to ask some questions and I was very impressed with the level of knowledge and customer service these guys have. Due to my certain height restrictions I was looking for a bike that would fit me and yet not have Hello Kitty stickers slapped all over it. Yes I'm that short. That's where Kevin comes onto the stage. This guy knew his bikes and talked with a passion about them. Even better he didn't drag me over to the $2000 model. Nope he actually asked what kind of terrain I wanted to ride and then showed me a reasonable last year model (even more awesome) that would fit me. Unlike some places who are writing up the paperwork before you even said yes, he explained what kind of brakes, how the gears work, & the all the bells & whistles. So I will be back later this week to be a proud owner of a great bike sans Hello Kitty stickers. These guys know their stuff, they will make sure you're fitted with something of your style and caliber. If you don't want a mass-produced Walmart bike, this is the place to go, even if you don't ride as much as Lance Armstrong. However, I'm sure these guys can fit a bike for him. read more

As this is a mid-high end bike shop where the staff knows what they're doing, this place is great! Established in 1983, Action Bikes has served the NE San Antonio and Universal City areas with care and love. When you enter inside the store, you will be promptly greeted by either Howard or one of the other employees. Howard knows his stuff. When I was looking for a new BMX bike, he told me all the features of 2 different bikes that I was looking at. He also told me where to bike here in town and in Arizona (where I am moving off too). With every bike purchase comes a year of free tune ups and maintenance on THAT bike only. read more

Great help when trying to find the right new mountain bike. Their pick was fantastic and they did a great job tuning-up after some milage. My family has been excited about all the riding i have done and Howard made a fantastic choice in a new ride for my 10 year old as well. They spent time with me to find what is right for me and for my kid instead of selling me on the "most expensive bike." Very thankful for that. Great work, Action. I would do 5 stars, but nothing is perfect (-: read more

I will definitely be going back to this location for any other riding needs or knowledge. Howard was awesome with helping a noob understand the whys behind the answer. Spoke to Howard on the phone to bring my catrike 700 in to have them look at it and fix a wheel issue. Went to storage to get my trike then drove over to his store. We talked about what he was going to do then he wheeled it over on the sidewalk and parked it outside. I asked him are you going to leave it outside? He said yes, we are really busy and have no room inside because of back to school and I have been in business for 35 yrs. I'm not really sure I understood what that meant but I asked him what if someone steals it? He answered very quickly, I will buy you a new one. This is one of the most absurd and irresponsible things I have heard today. My trike cost $3600.00 and he would just replace it. What a bone head this guy is. Wasted my time and then could care less if my trike once in his care was safely secured overnight or not. Howard, work on my $3,600.00 investment you will not. It's clear your boastful 35yrs of business has taught you nothing about respecting customers property. This also makes me question your honor and workmanship. This is the kiss of death for the customers searching for a trustworthy and skilled bike mechanic. If there was a minus rating I would give you a minus 2 star for wasting my time for the drive and for your lack of respect of my property. I will avoid you like I avoid Hillary Clinton. read more

Outstanding service and a great atmosphere. I thought I wanted a Wal-Mart bike (!) and I am so glad I stopped in last week to see Howard and the guys! I left without a bike but with some things to consider...came back this week and they got me all set up with the equipment I needed. Super knowledgeable and friendly staff that won't sell you anything you don't want or need and the service continues past the sale. Normally that kind of service costs a little more but a quick scan of the shop revealed some pretty competitive prices. Howard and his team are the bomb! Great service & great people. No upside sales pressure, after years of not riding (health issue), I took my Cannondale in for service and a tune up, I was ready to add new rims & etc. I was informed that my bike was good and what I wanted to do was not needed. So, after reading the good reviews on Action Bikes, I find I had a different experience. Everyone was very nice; however, they were unable or unwilling to tune up my two RV folding 12-speed bikes or my two 21-speed mountain bikes. I have successfully adjusted all of them, but was hoping to pay my way to some time freedom. These aren't expensive bikes (around $170 apiece), have Shimano derailers and handle twist changers. When I got the bikes back, one threw the chain off the front sprocket, would successfully shift down the stack of rear sprockets, but landed in between sprockets when shifting up the stack. The other bike wouldn't shift between the front sprockets without excessive handle twisting and wouldn't shift to the bottom rear sprocket (the other sprockets worked OK). They didn't want to deal with the mountain bikes at all. They willingly refunded $40 of my $90 payment (for the two RV bikes) and basically told me my bikes are not serviceable. So, I'm disappointed and looking for another bike shop. read more

I took my GT mountain bike over to Action Bikes to have my suspension bearings replaced. Even though I hadn't purchased my bike there Howard and his techs treated me like family. Due to no fault on their behalf GT sent the wrong bearings because of a mid-year design change. Howard got the Cannondale rep, Ben, involved with the issue and even offered me a loaner bike since my repair was taking longer than anticipated! The correct bearing came in and the bike suspension is like new. When ever I would call to check on my bike's status they were always polite and never acted like I was a pain in the neck. I highly recommend a visit to Action Bikes for you cycling needs. Tracy E read more
