But I honestly got tired of giving hundreds of thousands of dollars to a business who doesn't provide great customer service, and over charges people like me who look like they don't know what real pricing looks like. Monday, August 26th, I decided to leave my home in Chula Vista (one exit from the Mexican border - WAAYY south!) and drive my 24-year-old Toyota Corolla to Julian. I was about 12 miles east of Julian, climbing yet another grueling hill, when I had to downshift, get a bit of power to finish the climb - except I couldn't get the car into gear. It stayed in neutral. I'm panicking, because there is only one lane, and if someone comes up behind me, well, curtains for me, my dog, and whoever hits us. I managed to get off the road, onto the gravel, and contacted Action Auto, who recommended a towing firm (Ramona Auto Dismanteling & Towing) that came to collect me, and even drove me to a hotel after the car was delivered to Action Auto. I explained my situation to David, the owner - this was a day trip, I had only a bottle of water for me, one for my dog, and a wallet. I certainly didn't want to spend a week waiting on the car to be fixed - and didn't even know if it could be fixed. David assured me he'd have me headed back home the following day, and I went to the hotel feeling much better. After not sleeping for worrying about the old car, the clutch, the circumstances, I phoned Action Auto at 6:28 a.m. the following morning, expecting an answering machine. I got David, live and in person. He asked me to explain what had happened the previous afternoon, when 'I thought' (his words) the clutch didn't work. So I explained again, no resistance, wouldn't go into gear, and he floored me when he told me his crew took it around the block the previous afternoon! The clutch had come out of alignment, it was put back into place, smoothed out, and, presto-bingo, everything was golden. I confessed to him I'd not slept, been too wound up about the car, and now, well, my world had just been righted. He told me to get some sleep, we'd talk later that morning, after he'd had a chance to drive the car himself. David had one of his guys pick me up at the hotel, checked me out - and the bill was SO much less than I'd anticipated! - and I learned that not only did the clutch get repaired, but he checked the belts, the hoses, the oil .... he went above and beyond, to ensure I was safe. I drove back the 68 miles to my home in Chula Vista. David phoned late afternoon, just to ensure I'd made it home safely, and that everything was alright with the car, and with me. Top notch service. Expert mechanics. True compassion. I live an hours' drive away - whenever my Toyota Corolla needs a mechanic, we're returning to Action Auto. read more

On December 15, 2021, when our son was driving home from college, his car died. This is the car that Dave from Action Auto talked him into pouring $3,000+ into in August. So our son drove his 2002 Subaru for about three months until it died. That's $1,000 per month! I share this to help other consumers not to have the same terrible experience we had with Action Auto. Dave is not a responsible business owner and he will take advantage of you by never giving pricing in writing, only verbally saying a price over the phone in an unclear way. I took my 2004 Acura MDX into this shop for a engine mount diagnosis that other shops couldn't solve, even after replacing all engine mounts. (Grinding of drive shaft on cross member). They found a bad engine mount that had failed after only less than 500 miles of driving. Got it replaced under warranty, grinding got a little better, but didn't go away. Took it back to Action Auto, they put it on the rack, and 20 minutes later they handed me the keys and said "go drive it." Lo and behold, no grinding. I had hit my differential offroading and it dropped my drive shaft down causing the grinding on the cross member. I asked him what I owed them, they said no charge. They could have charged me what ever they wanted. 1,2, 3 hrs labor... they charged me nothing. I offered to pay $50 at least, they refused and sent me on my way! If your looking for an honest mechanic, this is the place. 5 stars. read more

I HIGHLY recommend Dave at Action Auto. They brought back my confidence in mechanics. I brought my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee in to find out why the number 6 cylinder kept missing. After all the tests he done he called me and said it was a head gasket and possibly the valves but he couldn't tell me for sure until he brought the heads to machine shop. Once he found out that the valves did need to be done he gave me a call and let me know I told him to proceed. The job was done efficiently on time and a bit under what he quoted and done correctly. Took my Toyota Highlander in because the car wasn't holding the power steering fluid more than a couple days...took it here originally because they replaced the power steering pump a few months ago..."no charge" to look at it....but it was fine. Knowing my luck, there was a bad hose...not the cheap, easy to get to hose....but the expensive, not easy to get to one! our luck hasn't been the best in a long time, especially since I broke my shoulder two months ago...they gave me a lift home when i dropped it off ((i wanna say steve...i'm sorry i didn't get your name), Dave called me to let me know what was going on, but when i didn't answer after a couple times....he sent someone to my house to see if everything was ok...Who does that??? I was moved to tears when i called the next day to be told this...there isn't even a word to describe how wonderful it felt to be treated like that... when i went to get my car...i left with a little matchbox car for me son, a bottle of bubbles for my daughter, a container of cookies for the kids and a promise I'd keep in touch..Dave was utterly fantastic, sweet, caring, totally huggable (i just had to cause he was awesome)...we talked cars a bit, which was cool, cause most guys just look at me funny when i talk about the ones I like.... Even though i looked like a hot mess of a zombie mommy extra on the walking dead.. Very happy to have found Action Auto! We moved to Ramona fairly recently, and when our car had some problems I didn't know where to go. I checked out Yelp and Action Auto had some very good reviews, so I decided to give them a try. I called them up just to make sure they were able to take my car and get an idea of pricing, friendly over the phone and answered all my questions, price seemed very reasonable. I had the car towed over late in the afternoon, told them I wasn't in a huge rush and just take a look when they could. The next morning I got a call saying it was all finished. I was very surprised because I thought he would be calling me with prices to repair but apparently it was just a minor issue that they were able to fix with no parts. No other issues found, no trying to sell me on other unnecessary repairs. This speaks a lot about the integrity and trustworthiness of the business and owner. Many companies would easily turn this repair into something costing several hundred dollars, or find multiple other items that 'need' to be replaced, trying to charge as much as they can. But a business like Action Auto Care is clearly more focused on providing quality service and developing trust to create lifelong loyal customers. When I went to go pick up the car the bill ended up being lower than I expected, they only charged me $56.50 for the service! To get my car running again I feel that is more than fair. Dave, and the crew has done it again. I bring an issue, squealing serpentine belt, and I'm sure I've got a seized A/C compressor and/or water pump. It turns out all it needed was the belt tensioner to be replaced, and we did the new belt with it of course. Now my A/C is working and the trucks running like a champ. BONUS! Finding a trustworthy, do-it-all auto shop can be as stressful as buying a car; no one wishes that upon themselves or others. Dave at Action Auto was forthright from our first meeting, which is a tough feat as even after the referral he had to earn my trust and respect as a reputable business; and that he did. Good old fashion hometown customer service. What a breath of fresh air!!! Today I had low air in my truck tire. I pulled in to the closest place I could find. I was immediately greeted by Mike who offered for me to pull in and check all my tires and get air in all of them. I felt so bad.....I had zero cash on me but offered my credit card. He refused. While checking all my tires air pressure he found a screw in one of my tires and said he'd fix it for me right now. WOW! Seriously!!! He stopped everything he was doing to help me. Developed a droning sound in my 2005 Accord. Took it to a local shop and they said it was a bad transmission. I called Honda because the car only had 50K miles and they said to bring it to a Honda Dealer for diagnosis. It turned out to be an active Noise cancellation unit, not the transmission. Honda wanted $800.00. I went to 3 other shops in Ramona who wouldn't touch the job. Action Auto Care fixed it for a fraction of the cost. They were honest, knowledgeable, and reasonably priced. I also had them replace the door lock actuator for about half of what the dealership wanted. I would strongly recommend these folks. read more
